The original deal in the 90's saw the NFL fork over millions to our league in exchange for allowing CFL players to sign with American teams. As far as I know, they renewed the player deal a few years ago, leading me to believe the NFL still supports us financially in some way. There's been a lot of bitching regarding our players leaving south during their last year under contract or whatever it is, so why renew if we are able to stand on our own feet? NFL Canada also has a close working relationship with the CFL, making it hard for me to believe our league operates independently. Maybe they do.They helped bail us out in the mid-90s, when the league was near crashing. Although we in Saskatchewan had the whole tv drive to keep the team... and it was a huge success.
Since then though, we have been making it on our own. The tv viewership has steadily been going up, advertising is way up... all in all we are doing quite well.
The NFL still does take our best players as they can offer more money due to the heavy commercialization and also the much larger fan base, but in no way to they keep us "afloat" anymore.
Although the funny part is... Ricky Williams was supposed to just tear up the league with his superior talent... but when he was healthy, he did shit all.
And regarding Ricky Williams- he should not have been allowed to play here. Makes us look like we're a backup for NFL players to keep their skills current while they're not able to play in their own league.
