When will the Catholics get it through their thick skulls that their religion isn't the 'be all and end all' of the world? Is every movie supposed to be a Lilies of the Field or The Bells of St. Mary's?

Catholics Upset by Eat Pray Love

D.I.S.H.
Julia bypasses church for Hindu temple

The new Julia Roberts movie Eat Pray Love is supposed to be about one woman's search for love, meaning and happiness as she wanders the globe. But for one prominent Catholic organization, the movie felt more like a slap in the face.

Contact Music reports that Washington D.C. based Catholic News Service has published a negative review of the film, saying that it snubs the Catholic faith.

The review, written by John Mulderig takes issue with scenes in which Roberts' character visits Italy and partakes in the food, but ignores the church. 'Though she seemingly hits every restaurant in town, she gives the churches a pass,' Mulderig notes. 'The implication being that she knows better than to look to Catholicism for insight.'

Ugh. Eat Pray Love. I can't stand that book. Whiny rich white woman and her silly problems. If she had visited the churches, it would probably be called Eat Tyrannical Indoctrination Love.

Who could possibly care what the Catholics think? Their institution has been shown to be corrupt, despicable, and rotten to the core. They are in no position to protest or preach about anything.

I went to all those churches, it was fabulous

Didn't get any insight, except on the fact that countless people died so someone could steal their gold or force them to do labor to get those churches built.

yeah, I agree. The churches are fabulous -- but they were built on the backs of the common man so that the church hierarchy could have this splendid edifice to show the world.

You know what -- evidently the Catholic church didn't play a role in her trip to Italy - so to have included it would have been hypocricy -- but then the Catholic church almost has a corner on that.

I went to all those churches, it was fabulous.

Me too. But what the Church fails to recognize is that:

1. Not everyone is interested in more finery associated with old dead white men
2. The Italians are Catholic, but their true religion is food
3. Who the hell cares what they think?

I'm not going to see this movie, which I refer to as "Indulge Indulge Indulge", but it would take the Roman Catholic Church's self important intrusion to make me defend the damn thing.

I was brought up as a Catholic but don't practice that religion anymore.

I tired of the priests and nuns pretty much telling me
If It feels good.... STOP!

So who cares about those kid fuckers(Kathy Griffin)

All religions are the same, constantly bitching about things that are none of their business. Awww boo hoo, the movie didn't represent your religion at all, fuck off, want representation, buy airtime.

Watched it in theaters today- Julia Roberts prays to God for guidance in the first half of the movie, so it comes as a surprise they're taking issue with lack of religious undertones in the film.

VERY good movie though- if you're currently having trouble in a relationship or are in limbo, it'll be right up your alley. Had me in tears more than a few times.

"Roberts' character visits Italy and partakes in the food, but ignores the church"

unless the church offer something fresh,
no one want to hear from them again.

I'll watch the movie when it comes out on Netflix. I heard it's good though.

And it was directed by Ryan Murphy (GLEE)

^ What T. said...

I thought the movie was okay, but I thought it went on for way too long.

rotary, it was only the lack of Catholic representation that the church was PO'd about, not the lack of religious subject matter.
