Charlie Kirk assasinated

I got an email failure. Address could not be found.
Go to that link and leave a message in the submit programming feedback. The local ABC affiliate suggested that was the best way to give ABC your opinion

Kimmel (and Colbert) will be fine. It's probably good for their careers. It's also good for the rest of us because as this administration intrudes further and further into entertainment culture, more and more people will be put off by it. A large swath of voters are not only woefully uninformed (or apathetic), but they are wont to cast their ballots based on petty issues, like having their favorite talk show cancelled.

re: cancelling ABC: Go further. Get to the roots. Your beef is with Disney.

Agreed. I'm not worried at all for the hosts. They can get their own show on a streaming service any time.

I'm glad the administration is so publicly crossing a bright red line. Now, some of the moderate republicans will have no problem parting ways in the mid-terms.

If we have mid-terms.

I posted a complaint just the same, to be counted:

Your decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel to curry favor with the current regime in the White House is appalling. You will never recover from this abandonment of your charter as the Fourth Estate.

The integrity of the "big three" networks was already badly eroded for many reasons, including the sell-out of your news division to big pharma. Now, your open censorship in favor of unconscionable partisan control of the FCC will hasten your end.

Please go ahead and put "A MAGA Affiliate" after all your call letters.

I and many others are now ashamed to live in a country where the powerful outside of government demonstrate such rank cowardice in the face of fascists.

I haven't got the stamina to write something coherent so here a few random jottings from the other side of the Big Beautiful Ocean.

Like most people in the world I'd never heard of Charlie What's-his-face before he got shot.

He wasn't any sort of statesman or hero and, as we've seen, he was loathed in many places, so for Trump to command the flags to be flown at half mast from coast to coast was outrageous. It's forcing people who hated what Kirk stood for to join in with the MAGA mob's weeping and wailing. When I heard that the body was to be flown back to his home town on AF2, with Vance as escort, I half expected them to announce that the bugger would be granted a state funeral like Rosa Parks.

I don't do Reddit but when I searched "Am I the only person in the world who's never heard of Charlie Kirk?" this was the first result:

That discussion struck me as unusual compared to most of what I've read, because it's not only highly critical on the whole but also very "grown up". Very little shouting and swearing. Almost as civilized as JUB! 😁 This comment sums it up quite well:

He wasn’t smart, he wasn’t hard working, he wasn’t charismatic, he had no professional expertise, and nothing he said went beyond what you’d find on the third page of a YouTube comment flame war.

There’s a good reason none of the people eulogizing him are running clips of him speaking.

That last sentence is interesting in the light of today's news about the late night satirical TV show that's been taken off air. The BBC reports:

Sinclair, the largest ABC affiliate group in the US ... said it would air a special remembrance programme dedicated to Kirk this Friday during the original time slot for Kimmel's show.

It's been pointed out in this thread that Kirk fanboys are quick to tear into anyone who quotes him out of context but they can't find any clips of him "destroying young libtards with facts and logic". I'd like to watch that remembrance show. I want to see what gems they can dredge up to illustrate his storied debating skills. If they don't put it up on YouTube I'd like to read a blow-by-blow account here please!

Speaking of debating skills, Boris Johnson was moved to post this:

The murder of Charlie Kirk is a tragedy, and a sign of the utter desperation and cowardice of those who could not defeat him in argument. Charlie Kirk has been killed not for espousing extremist views - because he didn’t. He has been killed for saying things that used to be simple common sense. He has been killed because he had the courage to stand up publicly for reasonable opinions held by millions and millions of ordinary people both in the US and Britain. The world has a shining new martyr to free speech.

BoJo is being disingenuous. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, where he was active in the Oxford Union, and he's spent decades in Parliament, so he ought to know a real debate when he sees one. The comments highlighted in duck egg blue under his tribute are pure echo chamber tripe, but when you look at the replies to those comments it's a fairly typical Facetwit slanging match.

The European Parliament voted no to a request to pay a minute of silence for Charlie Kirk.

The request was refused for "procedural" reasons rather than on principle. I'd guess that was just an excuse. They did hold a minute's silence for George Floyd, but if they'd done it for Kirk it would imply that they were buying into the bullshit about the terrible loss of a noble moral teacher who had been taken from us too soon, when in truth he meant nothing to anyone in Europe, dead or alive.

And the Chris Crocker award for overdramatising goes to ...

re: cancelling ABC: Go further. Get to the roots. Your beef is with Disney.

Disney is a problem. We saw this when they capitulated to DeSantis.

ABC has a history though. They did the same thing to Bill Maher, which is why he's on HBO and ironically, it's why Kimmel had a late night show. Kimmel replaced Maher's timeslot.

Maher is still bitter about it but he's been grumbling while he deposits HBO and CNN millions into his bank account.

That won't affect me directly since I never watch it, but also won't be any rallying cry if the opposition is wise. Putting all those chips into the trans basket this time helped get Trump back in. It's not the trans folks' fault, but the political strategists that chose that hill to die on. Priorities.
Straight guys are the ones watching trans porn. So far, they've survived the PornHub bans... although that might be why they're all so angry these days.

FYI...have you seen gay transmen porn? Some well-known gay porn stars have appeared in videos with handsome men who happen to have vaginas.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of straight porn viewers select trans.

I've seen a few for a few seconds before it was revealed one of the participants had a vagina.

I'm not sexually attracted to vaginas, nor to watching sex with one.

I am attracted to men. No men I know have vaginas.

Again...what the fuck is wrong with these people?????????????? Hyperbolic, hysterical and frankly ridiculous.

Can we get the School Board for Ellsworth to pose for a new bronze?

This one is getting outdated:

Pornhub publishes stats on searches by state/country. It's pretty interesting.

The 2024 results are incomplete because there are so many US States that are blocked because of their age verification requirements.

Back on topic...

This was an interesting opinion piece by Matt Lewis. Matt is a conservative commentator.

The impulse to cancel some voices this past week is understandable: Celebrating murder is cruel. It’s gross. It’s wrong. But the irony is impossible to miss: Conservatives, who long treated cancel culture as an affront to the 1st Amendment spirit of open discourse, are now calling for people to lose their jobs and their livelihoods, all because of something stupid they said on the internet...

Then, there’s the so-called Charlie Kirk Data Foundation, which claims to have a searchable list of tens of thousands of people who posted mean tweets after Kirk’s death. Collectively, this purge campaign seems to be working. A lot of scalps have already been claimed, including prominent pundits, and late night host Jimmy Kimmel (who was suspended after making remarks about the motives of Kirk’s killer).

But — let’s be clear — opposition to cancel culture is merely the latest principle that Trump-era Republicans have conveniently abandoned. Indeed, almost every tenet that conservatives held dear a decade ago has been reversed.

Skip to 20:10 and you'll hear "God, is this your first dictator?!"

Totally worth it.

I haven't had a chance to hunt down a video clip of the Maria Ressa interview. It's pretty chilling. She warned us and we didn't listen.
