A Chinese magician has sparked outrage from animal rights groups with a trick in which he gets goldfish to swim in sync, prompting China's state broadcaster to cancel an encore performance Thursday.

However, a separate regional broadcaster said magician Fu Yandong would perform the controversial trick again on Thursday night -- and reveal its secret so as to silence his critics.

Fu dazzled audiences two weeks ago with the trick and had planned a repeat performance Thursday on a Lunar New Year holiday show on China Central Television (CCTV).

A CCTV spokeswoman told AFP he would not perform on the show, declining to give further details.

Animal rights activists cried foul over the stunt, saying Fu had likely fed the fish magnets -- or implanted them in the fish -- so they could be dragged around their tank from underneath.

They said the trick amounted to animal cruelty.

Fu's agent Liang Ming also was quoted by the China Daily saying he would not perform the trick.

It looks extremely suspicious to me. What do you think? (The video isn't showing up. You'll have to click the link. Sorry.)

EXTREMELY SUSPICIOUS! One of the fish tipped over turning a corner! Furthermore, fish like goldfish don't often stop moving forward as these fish do. Very disturbing to see, yet not surprising - it's from China...

Goldfish are cheap, disposable, and easily abused :grrr:

.. I'd like to see that animal-exploiting cunt try those pathetic tricks using Great White Sharks. :D

I can't even get my dog to listen, and this guy is making fish do what he says#-o

Nian nian you yu = may each year be bountiful

yu = bountiful
yu = fish

Its a play on a homophone.

As for the fish, I've seen much worse treatment from kids bring goldfish home from the fair.

Looked like remote control models to me.

As for cruelty, in China, that's not even trying.

remember the clip posted a while ago of the cooking and eating of live carp? Now that was nasty.

Hmm, as long as the fish aren't being hurt, I suppose it's fine. It's kind of distressing to see the fish moving so unnaturally, though.

I found them both annoying, but, the gestures and the delivery of their banter was part of the theatrics.

Oh definitely....!

But I thought the man's voice/influctuations were a little bit more suited given his role as the entertainer. The woman just sounded like some sleazy whiny prostitute.... O EM G DID THAT JUST HAPPEN GASP.

The swimming was strange, stunted and not at all fluid. Very suspicious and not particularly entertaining to watch.

^Neil is right. The guy is a tool for calling anything lame with the term "gay."

As to the fish, again, I'll bet they do not have magnets in them. More likely, the magnets are under the table and they merely have steel shot in their guts or some such.

That's easier to believe than magnets. Magnets under the table to tug at the fish would be a bit easier to control than magnets in the fish, I think. But even if so, the controls have got to be pretty good, to keep so many targets moving discretely. It would be electric magnets, too, to turn the fish loose so fast -- or possibly the array of magnets drops away quickly.

Interesting puzzle, anyway.

And I think the magician was kinda cute. And he'd be a great Romulan in a Star Trek flick.

i'm curious about magnets.

Why don't the fish stuck to the bottom of the tank if it is magnet ???
