Chinese magician's synchronised fish cause outrage

^The water is so shallow it looks like the fish ARE stuck to the bottom of the tank.

It also looks like they are being dragged around by magnets underneath the tank/table acting on metal in/on the underside of the fish.

I never realized people cared so much about 'simple' fish. They seem like ordinary goldfish. I had always thought that fish weren't really that high on peoples' animal right's list especially since some 'vegetarians' will eat fish but not any other meat.

I personally don't value a fish's 'feelings' that much mostly because they don't really convey (to me) any form of sadness/happness/etc. They're basically on the same level as insects and spiders, but that's not to say people should harm them out of maliciousness. It's just not that big of a deal to me.

Is anyone else confused why people are getting so worked up about this 'cruelty' to these goldfish?

*takes a bite of filet-o-fish* This is torture! Such terrible communist black magic inflicted on poor animals! *munches on the filet-o-fish* The goldfishes are suffering! That was a not a pool of water they were swimming in, that was an ocean of the goldfishes' tears! *mmm this fish burger needs tartar sauce*

My anthropoology lecturer showed us a similar clip last year.

I didn't even think to be outraged about it. What a missed opportunity! As a white, middle-class, University-educated man, becoming outraged is my favouritest thing!

*is outraged*

The point being..?

Who knows, who knows.

That opening line relates to the rest of my post.... which didn't really have a point except to show that I am a (not particularly witty or smart) smart-arse.

I just take it for granted that there are people out there who live in la-la land and have nothing better to do than inflict their fantasies on the rest of us.
You mean like god-bothering, bible-bashing, gun-toting nutters for instance?

If that outrages animal right groups - have they ever been to a chinese food market ?

I meant your teacher's point, but you can forget about my question now...

"You get used to this when freshness really matters"........ REALLY?!

Though, I'll admit, I was MUCH more disgusted (I actually dry reached, and started to tear up) when I saw an animal cruelty video where a dogs skin was literally ripped off its body and over it's head whilst hanging by its hind legs (still alive), after which it was shown writhing in pain.... Every time I see something about animal cruelty, that image pops into my head, I hate it. I try to convince myself that it was a one time thing and they don't do it anymore. It's easier for me to believe that. Those fish in the video are the only ones they left alive whilst filleting, okay? Good.

So someone said he's using magnets, and everyone said he is. And still we don't know if he does, but he is, because some said he does.

I don't know how those fish were moving as they did, but their pectoral fins weren't active so they certainly weren't swimming under their own steam. I'd doubt that they were even real fish.

I see, this has become a cultural shock thing.

If you eat fish in any part of the world, be it trawled, line caught or scooped up in a net, it will be killed so you can partake of its flesh. At my local fish market, all the fish are dead, nothing writhing as far as I can make out. The only things that stir are shellfish like crabs and lobsters, and the bivalve molluscs. But even these when brought home have to be killed, by you rather than someone else.

Don't pour on the outrage without realising the meat that you consume isn't killed in some way. It is, and being able to see something killed for your consumption ought to make you humbled that it died for you. If you prefer pre-packed pre-processed stuff so the thoughts about the animal's demise is not on your mind, then that I say is much more outrageous.

I was just summarising what I thought as I read down the thread. It's amusing how rumour and gossip becomes fact and then the piling of emotions to something which has yet to be established.

That's what emotions are for, always ready and kicking, thinking requires too much work and, after all, when the piling of emotions has been proved wrong it's enough to say that you are sorry or that there is nothing to be sorry about, because guts are always right, and whoever talks against it all is just a cynic(al communist godless pervert ****** ******* *** ** * ***** ...).

Of course every fish and other animal we eat has to be killed at some point. That should be clear for everyone who is at least a little intelligent.
But in my opinion the point where the animal is killed should be as early as possible on the way from walking / swimming around to lying on a plate in order to be eaten. We've got the technical means today to keep meat fresh today, so there's no need to stack living animals in crowded boxes (or trucks, ships...) and keep them alive in such a situation.

That's an interesting point you mention here. I think you may be right about the people buying at such markets having respect and thankfulness for the animal that died for them. That indeed is something I miss in our clean supermarket-world, where I am quite sad about the way many people treat food in general, and especially food coming from animals. Maybe bringing people to a slaughterhouse, and showing them how animals are processed, before they are allowed to buy meat would be a way to bring this respect into our world. For me it would be a big step already, if people wouldn't throw away perfectly fresh and eatable food anymore, just because it was cheap and they bought too much.

I was thinking that they might not be real fish, but it looks like a person was hiding under the fish tank and went under the table when the guy put the red cloth over it and he is controlling the fish via the magicians commands.
