Redundantly sad, I like my Christmas songs: "Christian".
I can't find a youtube vid with the proper vocal lyrics to "Angels We have Heard on High" which is shameful.
Of course, many carols sound so much better in their native tongue. Angels We Have Heard on High in French [ Les Anges dans nos campagnes, Silent Night in German [Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht] and O Come All Ye Faithful in Latin [Adeste Fideles ]
At least for "Angels We Have Heard on High". it wasn't even the children's choir issue, it was the fact that they were using butchered English lyrics. I find that the biggest problem with Christmas Carols is that they "modernize" them: o'er vs over and travel vs traverse are the two biggest changes.
A perfect example of my gripe is this rendition of "We Three Kings"...
The actual lyrics in my hymnal [I have one, what of it?] are...
Verse 1
We three kings of Orient are;
Bearing gifts we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.
Chorus:
O, Star o' wonder, star o' night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide to thy perfect light.
Verse 2
Born a king on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown him a'gain.
King forever, ceasing never,
O'er us all to reign.
Chorus
Verse 3
Frankincense to offer have I,
Incense owns a deity neigh.
Pray'r and praising, all men raising,
Worship him God most high.
Chorus
Verse 4
Myrrh is mine tis bitter perfume,
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;
Sorrow'n, sigh'n, bleed'n, dying,
Seal'din the stone cold tomb.
Chorus
Verse 5
Glorious now behold him arise,
King and God and Sacrifice,
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Earth to heav'n replies.
^The amusing part is that on the last day of school of the year, we would have a caroling at school after Mass. We would sing Silent Night in German, Angels We Have Heard on High in French and Jingle Bells in Spanish with other "holiday" songs [it was a staple to have the headmaster sing: "seven swans a'swimmin"].
I remember that the German teacher would tells us the story of Silent Night during WWI and that there was a mini-armistice during Christmas. The lyrics may be different but the melody is the same.
All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey is a modern classic Christmas song; it always cheers me up when I hear it and puts me in a festive mood.
As stated above, Judy's version of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' from the movie, 'Meet Me in Saint Louis', and Peggy Lee's version of 'The Christmas Waltz' are great. And. I find I also really like Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas is You'.
