Cloverfield......HOLY EFFIN A! [WARNING: SPOILERS INSIDE!!!]

I hope Rob didn't die.

He was cute....

And Hub was fucking annoying. He was STILL trying to get pussy in the midst of all that terror and death...

They weren't comparing it to 9/11 because of the premise but because of the visual. Because certain images, visuals, and shots that Ebert called "unmistakable evocations". I can't tell you which because I've yet to see it but it's not a coincidence that they all came to the same conclusion.

As for people just wanting to knock J.J. down, these people are professional critics. They don't care. There are plenty of people they consistently praise; people who consistently turn out good product. Abrams is ridiculously overrated anyway.

Hmmm..... Well, it has lots of buildings being knocked down.....I can see how they can say it was an "unmistakable evocation." Because ya know, the monster which was bigger than most the buildings, was going to lightly glide past them. It was a friggin monster movie, not Barney. How else are you going to make buildings like the ones in Manhattan fall over, without explosions and such, and not look like images of 9/11? I don't think they were going for 9/11 looking images, and it is sad that the critics had to bring that into it.

It's not "sad" it's an interesting observation about the times we live in that our minds make such associations. And it can be seen in reviews across the board so that's what makes it even more interesting. Perhaps it's because the central image is the decaptitation of one of our most beloved national symbols I don't know. I just kept seeing that pop up in reviews and was surprised and intrigued by the fact it did.

The main scene where it's evident is when one building collapses in the distance, sending debris, office papers and dust in a wave right towards the main characters. Some of the resulting shots of people and vehicles covered in dust are quite familiar then.

I saw it earlier tonight as well and I enjoyed it for what it was. I liked the perspective and the camera movement didn't bother me but instead added to the reasons why I liked it. The monster sort of looks liked an elephant without a trunk.

My question is and this, of course, would contain a spoiler is.

So they were in that department store and the girl Hud had a crush on was infected. Did they shoot her or did her head just explode? Does that mean that the infected might be dangerous?

Because the camera movement was the way it was I felt like I was constantly trying to process what my eyes were seeing and that made it a little harder. Plus, trent from pinkisthenewblog.com said there was going to be an "OMG moment" or something like that so I was waiting for it and I didn't really feel like it had one.

I liked it though.

Kismet,

<spoiler space, even though it's in the title>

She appeared to explode on the other side of the tent. Whether or not something came out of her, ala Aliens, we're not sure. There was, just moments earlier, a glass case wheeled by that I could not tell if it was just a human, just a small monster, or both. They were also pretty freaked out that she had been bitten. Notice they didn't get her to a gurney to help her--they got her out of the tent where the people were.

If it were just matter of a big monster in the city, I don't think the government would have taken as drastic a measure at the end. The threat of the spread of the little ones was probably responsible for that.

even though I haven't seen the movie... I think the "OMG Moment" could have been when you do see the monster. Maybe the sea lice? Defamer.com had a link to a .gif that someone of the monster via their camera phone while at the movie.
IDK Jill bt I wnt 2 c ths mov!!

WORST MOVIE I EVER SAW!!!! PEOPLE were BOOING!!!! waste of money... popcorn was good

I saw it yesterday.

It didn't suck, but it wasn't great.

It was basically an hour and a half that went no where - the film ended and you really didn't know anything more than when it started - except that Manhattan was toast.

It was okay though for what it was.

Did you see Blair Witch? Or anything by Uwe Boll...I promise if you have then Cloverfield is NOT the worst movie you have ever seen

It was great! The point of view from the camera made it seem like I was the one filming it and what you would actually see if you were going through the ordeal. Unlike traditional filming which shows more than you need to see you only get a partial, more realistic take. For most of the movie you don't even see the creature just partial glances here and there. Which is how it would be if you were really running through NYC trying to escape it. I also liked how you never really find out the reason why it's there. JJ left it open for whatever reason. Maybe a CLOVERFIELD part two is in the works. I personally think the main creature and smaller ones are a government experiment gone bad. Why else did the military setup up shop so quickly and already have a plan in place to desimate NYC if they couldn't contain it. When you do finally see the creature it doesn't look anything G-Dzilla like to me. It almost looked like it could be human. An experiment gone wrong??!!

I would recommend it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I live in a loft in downtown Dallas and when I got home I was looking out my window to our skyscrapers and was thinking "what the hell would I do??!!"....

Go see it!!

Blair Witch handicam movement didn't bother me, the close up of Transformers didn't bother me, roller coasters dont bother me but the whirling, twirling odd angles filming of Cloverfield almost made me ill.

other than that it is a decent monster movie, I got out of it exactly what I was expecting. The creature kinda looks like the one in the movie The Mist only more solid.

the way one of the buildings collapsed and the ensuing dust storm looked exactly like what was filmed when the twin towers fell, hence the reference.

did anyone stay through the credits ? if not you missed out because you get a voice, Rob's maybe ?, that says something like "It's still alive"

not a great movie but one worth seeing, as long as you aren't really bothered by motion sickness.

I just got back from seeing this movie and it was insane...| I kinda wish it ended differently than it did though. I'm sure JJ fans are going to continue over analyzing this movie for awhile.

Soapskank, Cloverfield was the street the production company was on. It was only suppose to be a code name for the project to keep it secret. I guess all the hype surrounding the first preview made it stick.

I hated Rob's selfish ass. if he hadnt been so concerned with that dumb broad his brother and everyone else would still be alive. and curse them for killing off mike vogel so soon.

Actually, Rob holding back to listen to Beth's message is what saved Lily and the others. Jason was killed because he didn't get back to them.

Lily lived because she went back to Rob when he stopped going across the bridge.

For those of you who enjoyed the film, you simply must read someone's post at rottentomatoes.com.

Spoilers space--if you don't want the bigger picture explained to you and want to instead explore all the marketing sites, etc., don't follow this link.

This person followed all the marketing websites, fake myspace pages, etc. and has put together a pretty excellent theory as to what was going on. The detail in this is amazing, and I no longer think of this as just a movie, but an interactive mystery/monster movie that has multiple layers to it. Much like The Blair Witch, the experience is far more than just a film. Those who just watch the movie only get part of the picture.

I, for one, love that.

Saw it tonight.

WHAT.

THE.

FUCK!!

Crazy ass movie! I was on the edge of my theater seat from virtually start to finish. I've never seen anything quite like it. The theater was booming and loud -- louder than usual -- and it felt like I was literally inside the film, LoL. Everyone's in the theater seemed to love it, too. There was alot of "holy shit!" and "what the hell!" getting shouted, LoL. The action was intense and palpable.

Definitely an awesome movie experience! I loved it!

Two questions, though... why's it called Cloverfield? I can't make that connection for the life of me. And second, am I going crazy or did I see a helicopter/plane drop something into the ocean at the very end of the movie? You know, when it cuts back to the two characters at the ocean, several months earlier? They showed that for a reason, leading me to believe that the 'creature' (for lack of a better term) was dropped into the ocean on purpose (by our government?) and then from there, it grew. At least that was my assumption.

Oh, and also, it didn't give me any "motion sickness" except for the first 10 minutes with the party scenes, as the guy holding the camera (Hud?) was shaking it all over everywhere. After that, I was fine... not a problem at all. People are blowing the "motion" thing out of proportion, IMO.

Anyway, awesome movie!

I saw it twice and didnt see the end when something falls into the ocean....but everyone in my film school is talking about that.....thus i will be seeing it a third time on tuesday.....and they didnt really say anything about Slusho!, but, i think that monster had something to do with it....if you read the history of slusho on the slusho.jp website....and my image of the monster was like a venom(spiderman) on crack with a few smaller legs on his torso...at least his head looked like venom...but its resemblance, especially with the smaller creatures flying from it, was like Sin, from FFX

no i get that part. jason was a goner no matter what. after his brother was dead they should have just went to the evacuation area instead of going back toward the monster to get to the girl. and we don't know if lily survived in the end. if she did it was no thanks to rob's bullshit/ what kinda asshole takes his best friend, dead brother's gf, and another girl on this suicide mission. lily and hud only went cuz they didnt want to be separated and they didnt want to fight with him about not going.i was hoping beth would be dead when they found her.

I figured she wasn't dead, because there had to be a payoff to the Coney Island stuff we were seeing. I didn't expect her to be shish-kabobbed, but then remembered the writer was also from Buffy the Vampire. How very Cordelia. :)

And as far as them choosing, Rob really never asked them to go along. Lily was the one who was adamant, and Hud and Marlena were sheep.

no at first hud was totally opposed and told him he wouldnt let rob go. rob basically said ur gonna have to try to kick my ass to stop me. he's not gonna get into a fistfight with his friend in the middle of a crisis. lily wanting to go was so random and weird to me. her whole reaction to her boyfriend dying didn't make sense. marlena didnt want to be alone nor would anyone else in that situation.
