Comics!

So for Christmas I got my friend The New 52 Volumes 1-3 of Batgirl, and Volumes 1-3 of Batman; because they're soooo good. She's gonna love them. I still need to Read Death of the Family.

I read the last part as part of the city of owls epic. It's pretty amazing. For such an event it's actually more of a character piece

Well finished Young Avengers, I'm really going to miss this book. Is it wrong that I now have a thing for grown up 20 something Loki? lol anyway dropping the Ultimate line after Cataclysm and the GL books are not doing it for me. Will pick up Loki Agent of Asgard and the new Dexter mini, but I feel a lot of comics just are not hitting the mark. Considering the trade for Hawkeye though I'm reading good things about it.

Marvel is slowly dying for me. I get the Daredevil books and the X-Factor book but that's about it.

Really? I reckon they're doing really well at the moment. The xmen corner of the world in particular is amazingly good at the moment

I felt like that for a while but battle of the atom really boosted things up a bit. Just take a bit of a break and pop back in when it starts to get interesting for you again :)

BOTA was the problem for me lol. I'm hoping it picks up. I really like All New X-Men the O5 are interesting and having them switch and add X23 is good. X-Men has M who I loved in X Factor and thankfully Rogue is benched be the drama between Rachel and Storm is nicking at me. Amazing's first arc is going to be good but I have a horrible feeling that it will end up poor like WAXM did. Uncanny's recent Magneto once issue was good but I'm wondering now he's in a solo will he return? Also I need Cyclops to thump Wolverine hard and reunite the X-Men this split has lasted long enough time to get the band back together.

I kind of like cyclops as a counter revolutionaire though. I was never on wolverines side so it humours me that he's the one who has to stay at home and worry about the kids wagging school while cyclops goes out and does the real work.

I agree about amazing xmen but I think once nightcrawler comes in it'll really take off. So excited for 'crawlers solo later and magneto's (he's my favourite character).

I love the original 05 xmen as well. It's so good to see jean grey again and I love that x23 hasn't vanished into the ether.

Picked up Loki Agent of Asgard people you need to pick it up AND READ IT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!! Love it hope it keeps up the good work.

Yeah I picked it up and it was awesome. It's weird to see such obvious fan service for women/gay men. I suppose this is what it feels like to be a straight male fanboy over the last few decades

^
But what I will say is Loki is for everyone,no matter what sexuality you identify as but yes men our now objectified in the comics, urrently the way he is written and he finally isn't evil in the black and white sense as mischief doesn't always mean evil.

Did you check out ms marvel #1 by the way? It was really great! I expect great things from kamahla!

Didn't have dropped a fair few titles I must say cough DC one cough and Buffy, Angel and Faith are returning so I may buy the trade. Seriously need to get a hold of the Hawkeye trades though.

So I'm brand-new to comics. Like, I read my first one a few days ago. The Secret Invasion Deadpool tie-in was the one that broke my cherry, and I really enjoyed it. I just bought and downloaded The Killing Joke a few minutes ago and I'm about to go read it!

So, my question is, where do I start? I know literally nothing about comics, but with all of the entertainment I consume, I prefer it to make me think. I don't want a mindless, flashy or light-hearted read (aside from Deadpool, cos let's face it, he's fucking awesome), so what do I go to first?

I'm not totally into superhero comics, either, so pretty much anything that isn't fluffy and is easy to pick up at the beginning of a recent story arc would be great! Also, I'd love to read some alternative or indie stuff, so long as it's available online; I use ComiXology because there's no physical store in my crappy small town, so if you know it's available on there that'd be the best option for me. Thanks guys!

Hi risingphoenix, I know exactly what you need!

First off, go grab Alan moore's watchmen. You won't regret it, it's considered a classic. Then when you're done go and grab mark millar and Bryan hitch's ultimates run.

Have fun!

Watchmen is at the top of my wish list!

And The Killing Joke was incredible. I used to be pretty ambivalent about the idea of comics as art, but man, that convinced me.

Even if you aren't into superheroes, I greatly recommend the current Batman run by Scott Snyder. It's amazing, and beautifully drawn. Very psychological too. The first story arc is collected in the first two hardcovers/paperbacks (it's about the Court of Owls, not sure of the titles), and the second is in Death of the Family.

Thanks, Rolyo! I'll be sure to check those out. I do enjoy psychological, dark stories, so that sounds right up my alley. :)
