Computer Upgrade Help!

I placed the 1GB RAM in the first slot, then downloaded a RAR file, no CRC error. My Internet hasn't cut out yet. I'm glad kind of, I was thinking of just buying another stick of the same RAM I recently bought, but scared that it will screw up too.

It sure looks like the problem lies in the speed difference as noelie said. It would be interesting to run memtest on the new 1 gig module and if it is ok, buy another EXACTLY the same.

Well why does the new memory stick say that it's a PC2-5300 (333Mhz)?

I ran MemTest with the new stick of RAM only, and I had went through about 2 passes and I've had ZERO errors. So I have no clue. I'm currently running the new memory stick now, doesn't seem to be any problems.

I did have all three memory sticks in the computer, I downloaded a RAR file, tried to extract it, and BAM! Got the blue screen of death. So I do think that it might not be use to having different memory speeds like Noelie said. I will possibly buy the same RAM at amazon.com next week to see if it will run fine.

On the box it says PC2-4200 DDR2-533/400 I doubt they would of manufactured it wrong. But anyways I'm running the 1GB RAM stick right now, haven't ran into problems, will probably try the RAR thing tonight when I'm not so busy with things.

Brandon, you may be geting the same situation as I posted earlier in post#15. The computer recognizes is slower ram because....well just because. I have 2700 and 4200 mixed but it all shows up as 2700 and works just fine.

So now you have to figure if 2 gigs will allow you to keep everything you need open or do you run the risk of problems running more than 2? Only da shadow knows!

So it looks like your old RAM is causing the problem - but you say that you've got problems with just the new RAM in without the old RAM?

Yeah I put the 1GB in my computer and I left it on over night, I was using my torrent program, I came back and it kept telling me the file I was uploading was corrupted. So I closed the program and thought I would shut down, then out of no where a blue screen of death again. I got angry and when booting up to the desktop it gave me another blue screen. This is all on the new memory stick so I'm not sure what's going on.

I was thinking of just buying the 4200 memory from crucial's website.

I would send the new memory stick back and ask for a replacement. I got 2 bad sticks (same type/brand) in a row from tigerdirect once. I finally just sent them both back and got a store credit, which i ended up never using. i then bought a stick (same type and brand) from the local Office Max and it worked fine.

they would work for a little while (the ones from tigerdirect) but i kept getting what appeared to be random errors, blue screens, and general lock ups.

I had a guy from PNY the people who made the memory send me a few emails back. Here is what I got. What do you guys think?

I took out my old memory and replaced it with a Optima Memory, PC2-4200 DDR2-533/400 memory it causes a lot of problems on Vista and it even crashes some programs and gives my computer a blue screen. Did I buy the wrong memory?

His Reply
Did you purchase “1 or 2” upgrade DDR2 PC4200/5300 desktop memory module upgrade. You do need to upgrade with a Pair of either the DDR2 PC4200 or 5300 desktop memory modules. Need 2 of this type of memory upgrade.

My Reply
I upgraded with the 1GB, and I was still having problems, I took my old memory out and replaced it with the PC-4200, and then I was still having problems, programs crashed and I was getting blue screens when doing something like copying files over to my desktop. When I used the program CPUz it identified the new memory stick as a PC-5300.

His Reply
OK thank you so you are install 2 memory modules not just a single memory because the HP computer will only work properly if the memory is upgraded in pairs with both modules running at the same speed other wise you compatibility issue will get you caught just right after boot up with just very simple applications

My Reply
Well I did install a single memory module which was the 1GB memory, so would that mean that I'm having the problems because I only have 1 stick in the board? So if I bought another memory of the same type I wouldn't have the problem with the crashing and blue screens?

His Reply
No you most likely would not since you need to upgrade with a match pair of the same memory together not just a single memory upgrade for this a1700n desktop Compaq/HP computer system. Yes two modules upgrade is correct not just a single memory upgrade at one time.

well maybe the crucial web site is wrong but on your scan in that second box in red lettering is says "Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules." i tried to look through the manuals for your computer from HP, but i don't see anything that says memory has to be installed in pairs.

EDIT**: if you go back to your memory results page and click the Q: Do I have to install matching pairs? the A: is yes. on mine it says no. So i guess they are right.

Well the guy at PC Club says the guy at PNY was pulling my leg and I'm not even sure if buying another stick of RAM will do it. :grrr: This is so frustrating!!!!!!!!!!

No I just read that reply on the other forum and it's not true that your leg is being pulled (he he). Some PCs need to have paired memory and I did tell you that in one of my first replies (I recommended getting a kit/pair - sorry if that sounds like a 'told you so'). It isn't always obvious but if you're having problems with the one module and no problems with the two (old) modules then it makes the most sense as a solution. It can't do any harm buying the other module - if you still have problems then I'd just return both of them at the same time.

Okay, man, I can't believe getting a second opinion from some place else would be so confusing, because now I feel the guy at PC Club is pulling my leg now. :(

P.S: Also thanks for the offer but I'm sure Tony can do it.

Ah no - I don't think he's pulling your leg B :rotflmao: you're a funny guy (unintentionally I presume).

You don't know his 'form' like you do the guys here. Mike, Proven, T-Rexx, Trawler and the rest of the guys would put you straight on this Brandon but we seem to be in short supply these days (prolly the holidays and stuff) but it's not unheard of to have a PC that needs paired memory (it's just that I haven't heard of it in a while).

Any other tech heads want to reply? Mike?

I remember when my old computer only had one 512MB stick of RAM, then I went to the store and bought another stick of 512MB of RAM and it worked just fine. But maybe the newer models need that or it's probably just the type of motherboard? I don't know, I'm really getting scared to buy the memory now if it will cause problems. Hate to waste money on something like that when I could spend it on a damn power supply.

Well a lot of their points are similar to points made here (which is a good thing) but the moderator's final point is quite a good one. He seems to have looked up the motherboard details and he might be right as to having been sent unsuitable memory. Personally then on foot of that advice I would get memory pretty much identical to what was already in your PC. I'd stick with someone like Crucial - why don't you call them? Toll-free for US & Canada 800-336-8915 and explain your situation to them.

Well I should I just get the memory that Crucial says is compatible with my computer?

Brandon - if you don't pick up the goddam phone and call Crucial I'm gonna fly over there and smack you upside the head. If I could call them toll-free from here I would.

That's the same kit that I first recommended BTW. ;)

I'll call them later, I'm tired, I'm 5 seconds away of just giving up and leaving my computer alone, shit in the future I will just buy an Alienware computer so I can play PC games.

You are going thru this excercise just so you can play games?:confused:

Yeah, and run bigger applications like Adobe CS3 and other bigger programs.
You can use Photoshop? I gave up after V3.0 for the Mac. The current version I'm sure you would have to go to school to learn:(
