Covers that were better than the original

Re: Are there any covers that you prefer over the original?

I like "Boys of Summer" by the Ataris much better than the original by Don Henley.

Dolly Parton's bluegrass version of "Heaven Let Your Light Shine Down" is way better than Collective Souls version. Dolly has actually made quite a few bluegrass covers of rock songs that I prefer.

The Ataris did a good job on that track.

However... [-X Shine is made entirely by the unabated and shameless fury of the epic, balls-to-the-wall screamer of a solo by Collective Soul's brilliant and underrated former guitarist Ross Childress, which lifts the song from merely above-average way up into the echelons of epic. I have had the good fortune to see that same piece performed live prior to his leaving the band; in my not-at-all humble opinion, the song is nothing without the solo (in much the same way as the ghastly covers I mentioned earlier were ruined by their lack of interest and innovation on the part of the covering guitarists).

I will have to find this Dolly version and give it a listen and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Edith Bliss - "Anything Goes" (Cole Porter)

Re: Are there any covers that you prefer over the original?

Taco - "Puttin' On The Ritz" (Fred Astaire)

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

Nothing rivals Fred. I would take Clark Gable's version over that atrocity. When Michael Jackson said Fred Astaire was one of his idols, that shows how much gravitas Astaire still holds.

Not liking this video means you forfeit your gay card...

Oh, and of course, my new favourite:

Placebo's take on the old Kate Bush standard, Running up that Hill. It is many types of win.

I have a passion for cross-genre covers... hip-hop covers of Broadway, rock covers of pop, disco covers of classical... and I have a tendency to prefer newer versions of older songs, just because the sound is more developed. Here are some favorites that come immediately to mind:

Alient Ant Farm: "Smooth Criminal" (Michael Jackson)

Spiderbait: "Black Betty" (Ram Jam)

Aretha Franklin: "Eleanor Rigby" (The Beatles)

A Static Lullaby: "Toxic" (Britney Spears)

My Cover Girl does it best.

I am so in love with this woman.....Bettye LaVette....her cover of The Who's Love Reign O'er Me is brilliant. It's funny because back in the 70s she did some other covers I loved too...I have them on vinyl but they are hard to find and not on You Tube.

Another one I love...Tina Turner's cover of Help! I love her verion of I Cant Stand the Rain too...but maybe not as much as Ann Peeble's version.
