Meaningful discussion happened in spite of it. So, a win.

To get back to the original post for a second. I’d like to point out that suppressing a story and not reporting it is two completely different things. If the networks reported every crime like this the nightly news would be a 24/7 channel.

Let's be clear. They fall all over themselves trying to piggyback on whatever the internet beat them to before the 5:00 news.

They cover the most statistically insignificant stuff, along the lines of their preferred topics.

This is an unusual story with a lot of implications. Attempting to extinguish it by ignoring it, while covering Suzie Q. Middle-America disappearing in some possible kidnapping is clearing a) pandering to middle class anxiety, and b) continuing to selectively cover only crimes that fit the SJW agenda.

This one specifically colors outside the lines with a stereotypical East Asian store owner being brutal in regards to the poor they sell to, even if these juveniles are too young to have bought legally. Can't have a so-called Asian being depicted as ruthlessly violent, not and keep the drumbeat going about the alleged pandemic of Asian hate crimes.

It's clear. Just as clear as Fox's biased coverages. Just as common. Just as shitty.

Semantics about words is all well and good, but if a story dies from lack of oxygen in the room, or you put your hand over its mouth, it still dies.

A bunch of finger-pointing and re-hashing disorganized talking points about crime is meaningful discussion? Sure, I can feel the crime rate dropping as we speak.

If you wanna talk about crime and punishment in the US without including people of color say that next time. We were deliberately excluded in the thread title, and you've yet to explain what era you're referring to that was better than now. I'm asking a pretty direct question you've danced around long enough, what time period are you referring to that was better than now? What's the starting point of this "accelerated breakdown?" The less vague and wink-wink nudge-nudge you are, the more clarity we'll have. Maybe even something approaching meaningful dialogue.

So this thread is really about "Why isn't the news talking about this Asian guy stabbing a kid?"

The punishment aspect is equally confusing, is he supposed to go to jail for using violence to defend himself? if I didn't ask earlier, I meant to, is he being charged with a crime? America has crazy self defense laws that fluctuate based on..... certain parameters, since the kid didn't have a weapon it wouldn't surprise me if the shop owner was arrested, though I think he shouldn't be.

Yeah this is like the 5th thwarted robbery story I've read this summer. We're not a very crime-savvy country when it comes to robberies, apparently these clerks are trained to go! or it happens so much after a certain point they're prepared for it.

How to run a household? Let's start with the basics like food water and shelter? A lot of parents don't have that. Maternity leave since all the studies have shown how beneficial it is for early development. Can't raise a household while working 17 jobs just to not die or be homeless.

And I know, I know, if you aren't gonna say it someone will, "don't have kids if you can't afford em." Moot point.

My mention of how to run a household was meant to be along the lines of making ends meet. Income verses out put. You seem intent on proving that the capitalist system doesn't work for some... that may well be true, but it's what we have. Teaching people such things as having a budget and sticking to it might not do much for those who are on the brink of being homeless however it might prevent others from getting to that point. Just handing people money without some kind of a mentoring program to help them manage the money probably won't do much good.

As for food water and shelter one of the biggest (if not the biggest) problems in our nation is affordable housing. In my area the homes that I see being built are what I call "McMansion" houses. 4000-6000 sq. ft. Track type homes such as were built after ww2 are not being built which means that there is a limited supply of "entry" level homes... that keeps the price up. In the trailer park where I live a new 720 sq. ft. home is now $40,000. That means a 180 month loan is $222 per mo. in principle alone combine that with lot rent and utilities and it's out of reach for many people. In the old days trailers or mobile homes were much cheaper but HUD stepped in and set standards for manufacturing that greatly increased the price so a once "cheap" way of living is no longer such.

To me it would seem that the powers that be aren't greatly concerned about fixing the problem...they garner votes by just professing to be concerned, not by fixing anything. As you have pointed out so many times, we have a for profit youth home and prison system (industry) with a high recidivism rate. At least perhaps some of that money could be used for housing.

It is not unusual in the least for owners and clerks to be stabbed, shot, or beaten.

Occasionally one shoots a robber, or take a baseball bat to chase them.

It is extremely rare for the proprietor to stab assailants or thieves. Extremely rare. It is most certainly newsworthy.
