Sorry Chaz, but I saw an article about this too, instantly clicked on it, and it was just a vote to proceed to debate the bill ;)

But I will happily bump this many times when (hopefully) it happens! :D

I've been watching this. Pretty fucking exciting news! (!) I think this calls for a group hug!

Well, the vote happens tomorrow or Monday, but they only need a simple majority, so it's practically over now.

Oh, You're right. It was "only" a vote to clear the procedural hurdle to allowing debate, leading to an actual vote for repeal. Guess my excitement got the better of me! :slap:

But, THAT is a HUGE step, which, after the 30hr. debate deadline, just about guarantees the Real repeal! ..|

I can't wait!! (!)

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)

Cue the Obama bashing that it wasn't soon enough (despite this legislative result being far better).

One can only hope...

Once the written notice is submitted, 60 days must elapse before "don't ask, don't tell" is officially repealed. During the two-month window, lawmakers are likely to hold hearings to review the Pentagon's policies and procedures for accepting openly gay and lesbian troops, according to congressional aides familiar with the matter.

You can thank the people that didn't sit back and wait and demanded that they get this done. The people that didn't sit at the back of the bus quietly. ;)

You can also thank Obama for not forcing it like Clinton did and failing.

The president's decision to methodically invest all effort in a permanent legislative process was the right decision and it has led to a much stronger result that will be almost impossible to reverse.

It's live on CSPAN2. Vote to begin sometime today. It says now live at 3pm EST

Wow, this is moving fast. I guess these senators really want to go home!

I don't think that we ever imagined that Joe Lieberman would end up being the most instrumental of anybody, finally getting this thing rolling!!! I think a lot of us, myself included, pretty much thought he had become a full Independent-in-Name-Only, acting more like a Republican.

It helped a LOT that the media finally hopped big time on this issue the past few weeks, mostly favorably, deciding no longer to treat it like the "niche issue" that it was relegated to for so many years.

You can also thank Obama for not forcing it like Clinton did and failing.

I also have to say, IN RETROSPECT, that it ends up that Obama took the proper approach on it after all. But it was entirely a gamble, a crap shoot, with a very real risk (even up to last week!) that any legislation on it would fail, with no hope for a revisit for years to come.

Eat THIS, John McCain!

I also heard (for the first time) a couple days ago that Obama had actually made some phone calls to Senators about repeal, which was the first time I'd heard anything about him giving anything more than lip service.

I'm glad to see this happen, and I'm delighted to be proven wrong (well, not FULLY proven yet...but a simple majority now being the threshold, I think it's pretty safe)! I didn't expect to see this passed legislatively in my lifetime, because we all know DAMNED well this would have never passed in January.

(!):gogirl:(*8*)(!)(*8*)..|

pray that Senator John McCain doesn't filibuster the entire appeal.

He can't. They already got the 60+ votes required to end debate so fillibustering is no longer an option. The final vote will be at 3PM est today, with just a simple majority needed to send it on to pres Obama.

I love how Murkowski flipped the bird to Palin..... lol.

And I think almost all the female senators voted for the repeal (the Texan senator how did she vote????).

19 years after Canada did this.

Assuming the same timescale, you will have equal marriage nation wide only 14 years from now, or 2024. How old will you be then?

For once, can Canada not show its smug face in great moments in history threads?

I mean, great for Canada being ahead of the curve, but geez, we all already knew that, as it is reiterated everyday on this board. This totally ruins the mood.

He had enough power to halt the discharges.

His not doing so was part of the deal that allowed this to pass.

A permanent solution (as this was) is better than a temporary one.

Obama pursued the right strategy, and he got the right result, a permanent one.
