I know how that feels. You've gotta do it though. You can give those characters bit parts (even unnamed!) in your next story.

You could also tell a bit of backstory. There's some huge gaps in at least one character's history, IIRC.

In addition to Criostoir's suggestions, there's nothing stopping you from adding to the story over time - maybe an update here or there. What's going on in their lives. . . .

Actually...1981 is a bit early for that. That was the age of bikini briefs, skimpy little things in all colors and patterns. Stripes. Polka dots. LEOPARD prints!

Brylcreem, on the other hand, was deeply old-fashioned by 1981. Gel and Stiff Stuff (an actual brand name) were becoming popular. Spiky hair was popular then or shortly after (and I still find it sexy as hell on young men).

Brylcreem was a 60s thing in the US. I remember the commercials from then, "I came back!" "I came back!" "We all came back...to Brylcreem!" Women: "And we're glad they did!" They made specific references to "clear gel," and how it just didn't hold their hair the way Brylcreem did. These were its death throes.

By the 1970s the dry look was popular among young men, and Brylcreem could have no role in that (it was basically grease).

But who cares. I'm more into Dave's sexy, sexy arse, and Ra fucking it!
