Deal Reached In US-Iran Negotiations

When Iran gets nuclear weapons, in 13 years or sooner, bombs as a sanction will no longer be an option. But aggressive use becomes more likely as more countries and groups have them.

Benvolio, the five permanent members of the UN security council, plus the European Union commissioner, plus Germany, did not sign an agreement with Iran because they believe it is on the eve of announcing new nuclear munitions. When Iran has another revolution and is taken over by jain pacifists and elves from middle earth, bombs as a sanction will also no longer be an option. Until then, which is not tomorrow, and not for some time to come, diplomacy is the proper course of action.

Why better than continued sanctions?

Iran has made great progress toward building a bomb under the sanctions.

Why do you think continuing to do the same thing will result in a different outcome?

Obama admits that Iran will continue making progress.
"While the framework nuclear deal reached last week between Iran and six world powers would lengthen the current time needed by the Islamic Republic to make a weapon, that buffer period would shrink to almost nothing after 13 years, U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged Tuesday." See the link in my #57 below. .

Almost simultaneously, Iran's militia chief says that wiping out Israel is "nonnegotiable".http://www.timesofisrael.com/iran-militia-chief-destroying-israel-nonnegotiable/

It appears that the sanctions are causing serious problems for Iran, possibly enough to bring down the regime eventually.

I love Ben's sources. I wonder if his overlords include them in their talking points or of he's obliged to scour the internet for them.

Benvolio, 13 years was enough time for the US to fight the War of Independence and sign a constitution. It was enough time for the English to abolish the monarchy, suffer through a republic, and restore the Crown. It's even longer than Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister! Thirteen years ago the Queen Mother hadn't even been laid to rest yet. George W Bush and Vladimir V Putin were smiling together and signing treaties (which shows all of us that treaties don't always work out the way we hope). World Com was still a business. East Timor ended a bloody civil war with Indonesia and became a new country.

Thirteen years is a lot of time, benvolio. No need to panic.

No need to panic? Just the sort of opinion one expects coming from the less uncivil than most.

But NOT enough to slow development of an atomic bomb.

Well we know Iranian leaders want to sell to their people that the possible agreement actually is beneficial for Iran, and they made the West blink. It's as much a mistake to dismiss what the deal really represents as to believe it's the deal or war. However the Grand Ayatollah Khamenei today seemed pretty damned definitive that in the mind of Iranians the sanctions are removed IMMEDIATELY upon final agreement, and his approval must be obtained for Iran to agree to any final deal. I don't want to rattle the sabers towards war but just agreeing for the sake of doing a deal is not wise and I'm very skeptical we did get the best deal possible. Now the US is trying to talk tough regarding Yemen and Iran's actions in taking over the country... if Iran continues to threaten a conniption unless it gets its way regarding complete removal of sanctions, will we have enough resolve to say, "fuck you, when we KNOW you're complying fully, the sanctions will be removed in total"? I don't see any steely determinism, at least for the appropriate situations, in the Obama administration.
