Desperate Housewives starts Sept 30th!

YES, her comments were mean-spirited, but they were not reflective of her as a person. They came from what she had picked up by an apathetic, ignorant, and not so kind society. That's partly the reason why she called her gay uncle -- to get some sensitivity schooling.

No. You could argue that that words alone were mean, but the term MEAN SPIRITED refers to the intention behind them. And her intentions were nothing but innocent.

First of all, gay people can and have been having kids for centuries. And before you say "That's not what I meant; I meant gay people can't have kids biologically with each other", let me preempt that by saying, that's not the point.

It surely is MY point.

Finally, saying something that may be true does not preclude it from being a mean thing to say. It would be like constantly bringing up to a sterile woman that she can't have kids, either... or perhaps bringing it up the first time you met said sterile woman, something I think even Susan wouldn't do (were anyone to let her know that, which I doubt they would if they knew the first thing about her). So, it's true that the woman's sterile, but that doesn't stop it from being mean to have to rub in someone's face.

And this is precisely my point. She WASN'T bringing it up to rub it in their faces, it just slipped out as things often do when Susan opens her mouth.

She certainly did. But though she was not mean-spirited (and Lee himself said twice on another occassions that what she did was nice), the comments she made were.

See above comments about the definition of the term "mean spirited".

That was one of the best episodes. Susan was hilarious in it. I also loved the "Crab Cake?" spreading through the people. They really pushed all the storylines further in this episode. The end part with the aunt trying to tell Dylan something and the cello was beautifully done.

yea crabs thing

pretty cool.......

it was

and the new neighbor needed to get his ass kicked for being such a dickwad

I see your point, and your perspective. Personally, I believe words alone *can* be "mean-spirited". You can accuse me of "reaching" the way you're often inclined to do, but no, I believe words alone can be mean-spirited. The words came from a place of prejudice and ignorance. By saying them, and learning that saying that just isn't kosher, Susan got rid of that part of her spirit. I guess it was bound to happen that she would finally meet some gay guys and get to know them.

So we can agree to disagree here.

It surely is MY point.

And my point (see above) is that words alone can be "mean-spirited".

I knew people here would be bitching about the bitchy guy.

I think he's fabulous. He's going to read every one of those women, and I can't wait to see it. Wait til he meets Bree. Woo-hoo!

His partner seems as dull as dishwater, as Mrs. Slocombe would say. Trying too hard to be "straight acting" so that people will like him.

Am I the only one who's slightly ticked off that Dylan isn't more curious about her past and spiteful towards her mother? I mean, she got slapped by her own mother because she was getting nosy about things. If that were me, I wouldn't just be obeying my mother's every wish.

But that's just me, of course.

hurmph, i keep missing the new episodes.

however....i love the black guy last season.

why!!!!!! wai!!!!!!!!

Dx

Well, she's being portrayed as very meek and subservient to her mother. (And given her mother's personality, how else could she behave?)

I suspect she'll develop more backbone as the year goes on.

She's certainly going to be looking for answers, and no doubt Julie will be egging her on to do so.

i think he's too much of a stereotype
but then what do i know

he's obliviously the female of the relationship

the desperate house husband i dare say

in it. I also loved the "Crab Cake?" spreading through the people.

I loved watching of Edie, as she glanced back and fourth between Carlos, and Gabby and then gradually figuring it all out. Ya gotta get up pretty early in the morning to pull one off on her. Great scene!

Dylan is annoying me, or should I say the storyline is bothering me. It has been more than a few episodes of this crap. Just tell us already...

Ugh, all you people complaining about Kevin Rahm's character being stereotypical are annoying. Just as annoying as those who were pissed that Andrew was a sociopath. HELLO PEOPLE. It's a television show. It's a SOAP. It needs conflict.

The actress that plays Dylan probably wishes she was back on the set of teh young and the restless because this is a nothing role so far.

If she enquires more she'll get slapped :(

Thank you! Everyone complaining is so annoying.

The only one of the five that is unlikely to have a gay friend of the Housewives is Bree (which is probably why the writers stuck her with Andrew -- they're so devious like that...).

Mark Cherry, the creator and head writer for DH, is gay and has mentioned in several interviews that Bree is based loosely on his own mother.

That's why Bree has a gay son.

Um, yeah, I know. While we're at it, I've got another news flash -- water is wet, too! j/k

That's why Bree has a gay son.

Uh, huh...

Well, good. You can take my comments as more of a slam on anyone who might bring some of the crap I've seen on other threads in the M/G/M/E board. Not only have I seen people say that Marc Cherry is a "self-loathing" gay man (that might be the case, but there's no evidence of it in his gay characters, despite what some of the paranoid think), but I've actually seen threads where people said that there "do not need to be any more gay characters on TV". What I said might have been more of a preemptive strike on anyone who was going to try to turn this thread into that, especially now that they will try to look for things in the new gay couple to further their hypothesis about how self-loathing Cherry is. But then, people who watch a train wreck of a show like Rescue Me where someone asks of a gay guy if his father accepts his "lifestyle" and his "choice" and the gay character doesn't even bother to say that it's not a "lifestyle" or "choice" shouldn't really be talking about the "self-loathingness of others". That kind of shit sets the movement for acceptance back 10 years.

Your figures about the people on this thread wanting to see gay characters on DH and other TV shows are good, and let's hope it stays that way. :=D:

in north america
just me

so special i am.

i'd rather have susan has a friend then him........
at least she tries.

OK, I'm trying to decide if Jesse Metcalfe looked hot or wasted? Weird hair, put on weight, had him wearing long sleeve shirts to hide that ugly tattoo he got.

I'm not liking the gay couple. They come across rude. I kind of liked the fountain but they could have been better neighbors and not woke up everyone at 6:00am with the damn thing.

Lynette is playing a very compassionate cancer survivor, gives hope to others.

I still love Susan, such a ditz but a genuine ditz.

Poor Bree.

Carlos and Gaby are screwed and Edie is getting too nasty.

I hated seeing Metcalf return. He's such a bad actor.
Gabrielle is so stupid for kissing Carlos right in front of an open window. She knew she was being followed.

Bree and Orson make a great team. But I feel really bad for Phyllis and I hope to see more of her.

I'm kind of disapointed that Gabby and Bree didn't get involved with the neighborhood association voting. But they had their own stuff to do I guess.

Katherine is so nasty. I kind of wish we found out what her aunt wrote in that note at the end of the last episode. Maybe next week?

I'm also not a fan of the gay couple. They do come off as rude, even though they have every right to put that thing up in their front yard. I thought it kind of clashed with the house though. They shouldn't leave it on all night either. Its loud, and people need to sleep.

I thought it was too big of a coincidence that Bob and Lee knew about what happened to Katherine and Adam back in Chicago.

Mrs. Mccluskey was hilarious as always. "You have a son who came flying out of the closet, and a husband who's looking for the doorknob." Classic.

And who knew Ida Greenberg was a homophobe!? Makes me sad. :(

Next weeks episode looks great though. Although I don't like Halloween episodes that air after the actual holiday. :-)
