PART 9
Barry opened the passenger door. “You stay in here, I’ll check if there’s something wrong with the engine… okay?”
Kevin nodded and Barry stepped out of the car, while Kevin pulled the lever to pop the bonnet open. He ducked his head down into the cars innards, pushing Paige out of the way who stood with her arms folded, watching him, and was overwhelmed by the confusing myriad of cogs and whistles that made this thing go. He had absolutely no idea how this thing worked but he had to try and impress Kevin. His eyes swept over the engine and his eyes caught on something that looked a little out of place, he grabbed for it and pulled out a 15 inch long piece of plastic. Even he knew what this was; the fan belt.
He stepped out the side of the car holding the belt in his left hand. “We’re not going anywhere in this. If we ask Ben to borrow his car we could get a replacement and come back?” He suggested, looking at Kevin’s crestfallen face.
“I have to make it to my parents’ house; they’re expecting me at some point today.” Kevin said getting out of the car. “I’m going to call them… and don’t worry, I know none of us have any idea how to replace a fan belt.” He headed slowly inside passing Ben in the door as he came out.
“What’s going on out here?” he asked.
“Ben do you have your car keys? Kevin’s fan belt is fucked.” Barry asked, slamming the bonnet back down.
“Er, yeah.” He replied digging into his pocket and producing his keys. “You’re leaving?” He asked as he unlocked his car and sat inside.
“Well, Kevin’s dropping me off at his so I can pick my car up and then he’s going to his parents’ while I come back here.” Barry answered, leaning up against the roof of the car peeking inside as Ben turned the key in the ignition. Nothing.
“Hold on. There’s always something wrong with this rust bucket.” Ben explained calmly, turning the key again. Still nothing. “It’ll work this time.” He laughed. “My dad couldn’t afford to get me something better after paying for college.” He turned the key again and nothing. “Hmm. Something’s not right here.” He muttered.
“FUCK!” Barry shouted. “Pop the hood.” He yelled.
“Why? You don’t know anything about cars.” Ben asked but pulled the lever anyway. Barry took one look inside and laughed hysterically.
He emerged carrying a similar looking belt in his hand. “Both fan belts? What are the odds?”
*
Kevin lifted the receiver to his ear and dialled his parents’ home number. One ring, two rings, a third ring…
“Hello?” It was his dad.
“Hi, dad. I’m having car trouble. The fan belt in the mini has gone so we’re going to get a replacement in Ben’s car and then make our way to you ok? I just wanted to let you know so you didn’t panic.” Kevin explained far too quickly for anybody to understand.
“Right, and where are you now?”
“At the cottage.” Kevin replied.
“Well, where abouts. I’ll come and get you.”
“Hold on, I’ll go get the address. Don’t go anywhere.” Kevin dashed up the stairs leaving the phone on its side and came down seconds later with a piece of paper in his hand. “Dad, I’m… dad?” There was no answer, no dial tone. Nothing. The phone was dead.
*
Emilie woke up pulling the covers off of her head; she could hear quite a loud discussion going on downstairs. She pulled some clothes on quickly, raked her fingers through her hair and hurried down the stairs to see what all the hullaballoo was about.
“Sure, the fan belt thing is a bit odd. But there’s no reason to suspect anything with the electricity being gone… we could just go to the housekeeper. She’ll fix it for us.” Leona explained calmly. “If you like I’ll go and see if we can’t get her to lend us her car to get a fan belt.” She pressed.
“You’re crazy.” Paige snapped from the far side of the room. “If anyone’s doing this it’s that… woman! Both of the fan belts? It was probably her that sabotaged them so we couldn’t leave!”
Ben walked over to her to put a comforting arm around her shoulders; Emilie stuck her nose up in the air disapprovingly as she stopped at the bottom of the stairs. “Paige, we’re not in the middle of a horror movie. Now if you could just calm down a little bit because you’re kind of freaking everyone out.” He whispered. Paige folded her arms and slumped down into an armchair keeping her mouth closed.
“So,” Barry said, taking charge of the situation. “Me and Leona will go and see the caretaker; see if she can turn the electricity back on and perhaps lend us a form of transportation to get a fan belt. How does that sound.”
“Stupid.” Paige muttered under her breath so no-one could hear her.
“Right, Leona, shall we go over there then?” Barry asked when no-one said anything. Leona nodded in reply and followed him out of the sliding doors in the kitchen toward the L-shaped back building.
“We should just get all of our stuff together and leave.” Paige said suddenly pulling her knees up to her chin and wrapping her arms around her shins. “This is stupid.”
“Paige?”
“I’M FREAKED OUT OKAY?” She yelled, not even noticing who it was that was talking to her. It was Kevin.
“I’m freaked out too.” He said gently. “And I don’t doubt that you saw something; but I do think that two of us should go and take a look to see if we can find what you saw. What do you think?” he looked at her and she rested her forehead on her knees.
“I’m not going anywhere near those trees. But if someone else wants to… well knock yourself out.”
Kevin looked up. “Ben, will you come and check it out with me?” Ben nodded. “Emilie will you be alright keeping Paige company until we get back.” Paige nodded stiffly.
“I think we’ll be alright.” She added.
*
“You’re freaked out too, aren’t you Barry?” Leona asked as they made their way over the lawn.
“Yes, I am. Both of our cars are rendered useless. Of course I am, but some of us have to think rationally here Leona, this Bella woman should surely be in charge of all the electrics, and even if she doesn’t she should have a phone. Why don’t we have any signal here?” He explained through gritted teeth, clearly frustrated.
“We don’t? I haven’t even checked.” Leona pulled her mobile phone out of her pocket and, sure enough, she had no signal. “It’ll be the trees.” She said pocketing her phone again.
“What?”
“Blocking the signal, the trees will be blocking the signal.” Leona repeated. Barry grunted in agreement.
“Just because I know what it is doesn’t make me feel any better about it. Let’s hope Bella has a phone in there otherwise we are going to have to climb rather tall trees in order to make a phonecall.” Barry picked up the pace and strode over to the small building and knocked loudly on the door.
“Have you thought of the possibility that it’s this woman screwing with us?” Leona asked after catching up with him.
“Of course I have, doesn’t mean I’m just going to let her do it though does it?” Barry replied stiffly.
“Did you speak to Kevin yet?”
Barry just looked at her with her eyebrows raised. He opened his mouth to speak when the door opened and Bella stood there smiling genially.
“Hi there.” Barry said. “We are having some power problems over at the house, the problem being that we don’t have any. You have any idea.” Barry asked moving to step inside. Bella stopped him.
“You can’t come in here.” She said sharply. “If you wait here I will go and check the fuse box; see if the one to the house hasn’t accidentally been flicked. Give me a second.” She shut the door and the lock clicked. Barry and Leona looked at one another with their eyebrows raised.
*
“Right, so, why are we doing this?” Ben asked. “We both know we’re not going to find anything.”
“Don’t be an idiot Ben. Are you really that clueless as to what is going on here? No wonder you and Emilie are always falling out. Someone is here stopping us from leaving and I, for one, don’t plan on spending enough time here to find out why.”
They had made it past the pool now and were making there way to the forest of redwood pine very quickly.
“You know, getting this close to it is freaking me out a little bit.” Ben said as they stepped into the shadows of the forest. “It’s dark.”
“Stop being a wimp. Now why don’t you show me where Paige saw this red thing?” Kevin asked calmly.
Ben raised a shaking hand and pointed in a north-easterly direction toward the centre of the forest and up a steep hill. You couldn’t tell from the house because of the density of the forest but the ground here shot sharply upwards.
“Let’s get up there then and check it out, oh and Ben? Watch your step, if you slip it’s going to hurt and the ground here is mossy.” Kevin said as he started to climb the hill using the tree trunks to aid him.
“Thanks, that makes me feel so much better.” Ben replied, following suit.
A little while later Kevin looked back and was surprised at how far they had managed to climb. They had to be getting near the spot now.
“You ok?” He asked Ben, who had stopped climbing to lean against a tree, panting and wiping his sweaty brow on his sleeve.
“I’m fine. Just need to catch my breath is all.” He answered breathlessly. “It shouldn’t be that far away now anyway, go and look for it.”
Kevin looked at him like he was stupid. “There’s no way we’re splitting up.” He said simply.
“Go on. I’ll catch up.” Ben insisted. “I just need to catch my breath, and, if you feel you need to, you can talk to me while you go a little further. How’s that? I’ll be right here.”
Kevin pleaded with his eyes but got nothing. “Fine, but don’t stop talking. How did you get so unfit anyway?” He added with a smirk before trundling off into the woods.
*
“I hate sitting here and waiting.” Emilie complained. “I want to do something too.”
Paige lifted her head from her knees. “There is something you could do.” She said quickly. Emilie raised an eyebrow.
“What’s that?” She asked coldly.
“Lock the doors… all of them. At least we’ll know that we’re safe.”
“Are you an idiot?” Emilie scoffed. “If I lock the doors then the others won’t be able to get in when they come back. Don’t you care about Ben?” She asked coldly.
“Why would I care about him?” She asked, looking warily at Emilie. Emilie picked up on her reaction.
“You little bitch.” She whispered. “You slept with him didn’t you?” She let out a low giggle. “I can’t believe it, I can’t actually believe it.”
Paige dropped her feet to the floor and placed her hands congenially in her lap.
“I’ll lock the fucking doors, you whore! And then I’ll fucking kill you, you hear me? I’ll kill you!” She walked away waving her arms wildly as she tried to figure out what to do. “In fact, why wait till the doors are locked?” Her eyes were wide and glowed with anger as if they were on fire. She lunged at Paige and slapped her hard across the face before dragging her off of the chair and wrestling her to the ground. Paige clutched at her face in pain and dabbed at her bleeding lip with the back of her hand while she caught her breath.
“I guess I deserved that.” She grimaced and clenched her jaw as Emilie’s hand lifted to strike her again. Emilie paused after hearing a clicking sound and Paige, taking advantage of her distraction grabbed a handful of hair and yanked until Emilie howled in pain. Paige started to crawl away but Emilie snatched at her ankle and pulled her back before flipping her over and laying into her. Paige covered her face with her arms but Emilie was furious and was hitting her as hard as she possibly could. The clicking sound stopped and the lights came on, but Emilie didn’t notice.
“EMILIE!” Paige screamed, blood flying out of her mouth and spattering Emilie’s cheek.
“WHAT?” She shrieked.
“The electricity is back on.”
*
“What could possibly be taking her this long?” Leona asked as her and Barry both leant against a side of the door.
“Nothing.” Barry replied. “And I’m quite tempted to go in there and find out what she’s up to… if the door wasn’t locked anyway.” He added. Leona placed a gentle hand on his arm and gave him a faint smile.
“That should be it back on now.” Bella said opening the door. “I think you must’ve overdone it last night; I’ve flicked it back on now and you should be alright.”
“Thanks.” Leona said automatically jumping back from the door. Barry craned his neck trying to get a good look of the inside.
“Now, if you don’t mind.” Bella said quickly. “I have to get back to some… housework. Good day to you.” She closed the door and it was locked again.
“You don’t trust her do you?” Leona asked as they walked away from the outbuilding.
“Of course I don’t… housework? That place was sparkling from what I could see. Something’s going on here, Leona, and I don’t like it one bit.”
“Hey what’s that?” Leona said pointing toward the tree line. A cloud of dust and dirt had billowed up into the air like a mushroom cloud.
“Something heavy must’ve fallen.” Barry replied. “We should go check it out.”
*
Kevin carried on climbing, looking about himself all the time for a glimpse of red. What on earth had Paige seen and where was it now?
“Has Barry spoken to you yet?” He heard Ben call up to him.
“Of course he has, we were going to drive to my parents remember?” Kevin called back grabbing another tree as his foot came out from underneath him and he slipped and fell.
“You Ok?” Ben called up.
“Yeah…” Kevin replied pulling himself up again and latching onto another tree. “I’m fine, and I think I’ve found it.” Kevin shouted back. Pulling himself a little further a long and reaching his hand out for a red scarf that was snagged on a branch.
“Excellent!” Ben shouted back up. “Must be a relief for you both mustn’t it? You and Barry I mean.”
Kevin stopped reaching for the scarf confused. “What must?” He called back. He didn’t get an answer. “Ben, are you there?” No answer. “Shit!” He reached out and grabbed the scarf before barrelling down the hill, using the trees to keep himself upright, to get back to Ben. He reached the tree that Ben had been leaning against. “Oh, Ben, where are you?” He whispered.
*
“It’s Ben!” Leona cried as she got closer and started running toward the motionless body lying on the ground. Barry followed close behind her and crouched down where Ben was lying afraid to touch him. Leona, meanwhile looked up between the trees.
“Hello?” She called.
“Leona?” Kevin replied, sliding down as quick as he possibly could. “Is Ben alright? I think he slipped and fell.” Kevin gasped as he slid into view covered in dirt and a gash on his forehead. Barry looked up and gasped.
“Are you okay? We should get that cleaned up.” He said getting up and fussing over Kevin’s head.
“I think Ben’s more important right now.” Kevin said gently, prising Barry’s shaking hands away from his face.
Leona was still looking into the trees.
