Discussion Thread from the Funny Anti-Religious Pictures thread.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

And it's not that I "think" they're faulty' I only point something out when it is inarguably faulty and also rather egregious. I let the great majority of boo-boos go by.

Inarguably faulty? How infallible of you.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Any in-depth religiously themed discussion will be moved to the Discussion Thread.

Any so called references to the ignorance portrayed in those pictures and of other member's points of view is deemed religious and will be moved to the Discussion Thread.

Hehehe, now we can go and carpet-bomb the discussion thread with Hitchens, Darwin and Voltaire without spoiling the fun here. I wonder of the proselytizers are still gonna like their game now?

Love this one. I really had to look three times to see it lol. A pity it says "christianity" instead of "religion", because every religion is like this, really.

Wow, only now it dawns on me that Kuli has filled five entire pages of insults to us in just the first 65 days of 2017. Someone must be able to make a good cartoon about this for the other thread.

It is just such a shame that an amusing and entertaining thread has been subjected to so much drama. The Mods have done an admirable job in solving and salvaging, what at one time looked like being either a doomed or closed thread.

Kudos to them, and to johaninsc for the way they handled this.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

It tells me that the person who made that sign is an idiot.

As is the person who thinks it's a position worth addressing.

Of course the real problem is it even a real sign, there are literally dozens of church sign generator web sites that will generate an image of a sign saying whatever you want.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Well, the real problem is that the term "moderate" is misapplied. Many of the people who don't take Genesis 1 & 2 literally are anything but moderate; they're just as fanatic as those who take it literally -- and they actually have scholarship on their side!

I would agree but I think the point is still relevant, as the post points out, there are a lot of Moderate Muslims that far more preferable to the radicals. The same goes for Christianity. If we don't allow some room for the real Moderates to thrive then you will force some to side with the radicals.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

Except that's not true. Quakers are religious people, and they would never produce anything resembling sharia

I hear the same thing about buddhism, but muslims in Thailand and Burma have horror stories to tell about extremist buddhists.

It seems that all religions are kind and tolerant as long as they are not in power, and become evil when they are in power for a while. So let's keep them in check.

Right on sister! As atheists in the muslim world always say: moderate muslims are "getting there". And in many countries, "moderate" is a euphemism for atheist, if apostasy is punishable for instance.

In the FARIP thread, I wrote:

And Zoltanspawn replied:

I don't know about that.

So my question to you, Zoltan: can you tell me which of those religions are NOT impossible? They all claim things that aren't true, right?

So my question to you, Zoltan: can you tell me which of those religions are NOT impossible? They all claim things that aren't true, right?

Do they all claim things that aren't true?

I would suggest that the variety of religious belief is so diverse that even an expert in the field, such as a doctor in comparative religion, would not know what the claims of all religions are. Look over that list again in a link that works. It's long. Now, follow through to a religion and understand what its claims are. (Finally, determine whether those claims are true.) Pretty tall order.

"Religion" is as broad a category as "history." Who knows enough about "history" to make equally categorical statements? This is why I think it's as silly to say 'all religions claim things that aren't true' as it is to say 'my religion is the one true religion.'

It's an account that someone like Mircea Eliade might be able to deliver in a brief fashion (see his encylopedia, for example) but not one that could be delivered by a single person in a fair manner.

So, the assertion that all religions claim things aren't true is rhetoric.

If that doesn't satisfy you, I would point out that there are some religions which don't make any supernatural claims, or don't assert there are miracles or don't demand that their narratives be understood as a kind of alternative fact, so on and so forth. Some examples of that sort of religion, but only the most obvious, might be found in the list under the section "post-theistic and naturalistic religions."

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

1st January 2017 marks the point where this thread has been split, between this the

Funny anti-religious Internet pics thread

and the off topic posts that form the

Discussion Thread from the Funny anti-religious Internet pics thread.

Based on a cached copy of this thread in the Internet Archive from October 2014, we observe the opening post has the following attributes.

1. The thread title suggests the main concern are pictures which are funny but anti-religious from the internet.

2. The opening post has five attachments of that nature together with his comment "LMAO ", and the thread starter, StarCrasher, whose account has been deleted. Since no rules for the thread were given, if this Opening Post is to set the mood, then to be on-topic, a supply of funny pictures poking fun at religious topics is to be entertained.

Therefore, this thread will be for pics and light commentary about the pictures.

Any in-depth religiously themed discussion will be moved to the Discussion Thread.

Any so called references to the ignorance portrayed in those pictures and of other member's points of view is deemed religious and will be moved to the Discussion Thread.

Please use the Report Post function (dark grey triangle with exclamation mark) to the lower left of the problem posts to flag them up for review and possible transfer to the discussion thread.

(*8*)

So hatred, bating, and bigotry now get to masquerade as humor on JUB.

Got it.

That's the funniest post in the thread.

Moderator Notice

This thread was split from the Funny anti-religious Internet pics thread for the sole reason being that these posts that now reside here constitute a class of off-topic discussion there.

Further posts in that thread which meet that criteria will join this thread.

Disclaimer:

I have followed my colleague opinterph's suggestion, to chose January 1st as our arbitrary cut-off point for review. It allows us to return each portion of the thread back relatively quickly.

I make no apologies for which posts ended up here. But for your information, a reading of the thread yielded various combinations of picture only, and varying degrees of religious commentary from none to full on indoctrination. Some posts which had off topic quotes were edited in the original thread, but I chose also to send a full unedited duplicate of the post here into this [strike]derailment[/strike] discussion thread. What was left in the original post in the original thread were on-topic picture posts. Some posts which garnered light commentary but not of a religious nature were left in place.

Now, let's marvel at this lovely picture.

I wish to make an analogy (if you'll pardon the pun(s) to come), commenting that the stool is not actually a stool in the medical sense and therefore factually inaccurate is off topic. Commenting that this analogy about the discussion is offensive because likening it to shit, is off topic. Berating others that this shit matters is off topic. It is a fricking picture of a three legged stool in an orange sample bottle, a visual pun, and we are not looking for factual accuracy in a funny anti-religious picture thread. In future, please flag down the shit over there and I or my fellow mods will happily mop up on ailse 4.

What an eminently good idea. All hail zoltanspawn!

P.S. Thank you for the suggestions that we recieved in Mod Towers, they have been very interesting. I wish to say that your right to answer any post still exists though some posts may be moved from one thread to another to enable on-topic discussion in the appropriate place.

Given what was left in the other thread, I can only conclude that unrestrained hatred of entire classes of people is now legitimate on JUB, so long as it hides behind a claim of "humor", and no intelligence or factuality is required.

As for this thread, I can't find any "full on indoctrination"; the closest to that are the rants that religion is fiction.

And some good humor was moved here, too.

As for the pic above, it is not an illustration bearing on anything I posted: the "stool" in the picture is still a stool, just a different meaning of the word; it's an example of the kind of humor I applauded.

But it does make clear that I would be perfectly in-line with JUB's policy to make an anti-female thread and suggest that all females are nothing but shit, so long as I called it "Funny".

How is it that any thread which has turned into an excuse to post hate -- without the least trace of humor -- is "entertaining"?

Would you all be thrilled about a "Funny anti-gay internet pic" thread which used images taking it for granted that all gays are pedophiles and rapists, spreading disease everywhere? I would have to assume that you would applaud it, or at least defend it vigorously -- or this is nothing but hypocrisy.

Wow, only now it dawns on me that Kuli has filled five entire pages of insults to us in just the first 65 days of 2017. Someone must be able to make a good cartoon about this for the other thread.

"Insults"?

I posted no insults -- I posted facts and logical analysis.

That you can't see the difference helps explain why a thread devoted to humor turned into a hate-fest uncaring about accuracy or reason.

Of course the real problem is it even a real sign, there are literally dozens of church sign generator web sites that will generate an image of a sign saying whatever you want.

Seriously?

That has to be a real boon to the haters in the other thread who hide behind a pretense of "humor".
