Discussion Thread from the Funny Anti-Religious Pictures thread.

Re: Funny anti-religious Internet pics

I hear the same thing about buddhism, but muslims in Thailand and Burma have horror stories to tell about extremist buddhists.

It seems that all religions are kind and tolerant as long as they are not in power, and become evil when they are in power for a while. So let's keep them in check.

Wait -- you're actually comparing Quakers to Buddhist extremists?

As for "kind and tolerant", some religions aren't "kind and tolerant" regardless of whether they're in power. And the ones that are when not don't change when they get in power, because religions don't hold power -- people do. What changes is that people claiming to adhere to a religion instead turn it into an ideology, and its ideologies gaining power that have historically proven bad.

Do they all claim things that aren't true?

It depends on how you define "religion". Christianity makes no claims that don't have evidence behind them, but subsets thereof most certainly do; just for two examples, fundamentalism makes claims obviously not true, as does Roman Catholicism. So no, not all claim things that aren't true, but many do -- usually the ones that don't care to know anything but their religious material, but even that isn't a totally correct generalization.

I would suggest that the variety of religious belief is so diverse that even an expert in the field, such as a doctor in comparative religion, would not know what the claims of all religions are. Look over that list again in a link that works. It's long. Now, follow through to a religion and understand what its claims are. (Finally, determine whether those claims are true.) Pretty tall order.

True. This is why most of my posts only pointed out errors about Christianity, and the rest about Judaism and Islam -- I don't have expertise beyond the first, and less beyond monotheism (except where I found a religion's claims to be irrational or plain false, e.g. Hinduism).

How is it that any thread which has turned into an excuse to post hate -- without the least trace of humor -- is "entertaining"?

Would you all be thrilled about a "Funny anti-gay internet pic" thread which used images taking it for granted that all gays are pedophiles and rapists, spreading disease everywhere? I would have to assume that you would applaud it, or at least defend it vigorously -- or this is nothing but hypocrisy.

Just who the hell do you think you are? The humour Taliban? You have no right to tell me, or others what they may, or may not find humorous. Regardless of "biblical authenticity". Do us all a favour, go gather up your dollies, place them back in your pram, find a secluded spot, and give us all a break.

From the notice in the original thread:

Any so called references to the ignorance portrayed in those pictures and of other member's points of view is deemed religious and will be moved to the Discussion Thread.[/B]
(*8*)

This gives open license to violate the Code of Conduct:

"Please do not use language that sounds like, stands for, hints at, abbreviates, or insinuates hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, sexual, or religious slurs)"

Anything insulting to any religion that is based on falsehoods about that religion falls into the category of religious slur, whether it is in words or picture -- or pictures containing words. Indeed, many posts which actually do get their facts straight may still be religious slurs, but in the interest of humor I've never objected to those.

I have to ask if this policy is going to be applied widely. If errors about religion can't be pointed out in a thread in a forum which states at the top that it is for discussion, then is it going to become off-limits to post errors (including deliberate falsehoods) about racial, ethnic, and sexual matters as well? Or is it just religion that is fair game for slurs to be posted freely?

This. I second this.

Kuli, I've known waaaaay too many muzzies who speak just like you, and they don't contribute to humanity or civilized society in any way. Y'all just don't.

Actually, I do:

"Please do not use language that sounds like, stands for, hints at, abbreviates, or insinuates hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, sexual, or religious slurs)."

If it's not factual, it's a slur.

Given that, most of the FARIP thread is just a string of slurs which somehow are allowed contrary to the site's and forum's policy. Whether you personally find it funny is irrelevant; here, you may not find it funny, because it is outlawed.

Really? People who insist on civility and reason and factual accuracy "contribute to humanity or civilized society in any way"?

I don't care if it's religion sexuality, science, history, or what -- I oppose ignorance and bigotry, and the FARIP thread celebrated both. Ignorance and bigotry don't contribute to society or humanity, reason and accuracy do. I defended reason and accuracy, and nothing more; even humor which should have been deleted as a violation of the Code of Conduct, I didn't bother, because it was accurate.

But the thread had become little but a stream of slurs.

^Oh please. You just missed that straw which floated by. As you seem to be grabbing at every other one. Your problem is, you hate to be informed that many of us think you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Get over it. All you are doing is showing that MENSA IQ, or not. Common sense seems to have a habit of eluding you, with practiced ease.

I refuse to "get over" opposing hate, which is what the FARIP thread had pretty much become. And when hate is combined with ignorance and irrationality, I will oppose it.

If someone had started an "Funny anti-atheist internet pic" thread and filled it with errors and irrationality I noticed, I would have been just as vehement, or a "Funny anti-science internet pic" thread -- and have been so on boards where I was a moderator. Celebration of hatred and ignorance should not be considered funny by anyone; people finding it so tells me I'm just dealing with bigots.

Don't you bloody dare call me a bigot, because i find your obsession with being called out ridiculous. One other thing. You are not a Moderator on this board. Something you should perhaps remember. Yes?

*Please do not insult, blah, blah, blah. Sound familiar? Follow your own advice, and get off your [STRIKE]preach-box[/STRIKE] soapbox.

I made no insults. Nor am I obsessed with anything but logic and accuracy.

If you fit the description I gave, then you are a bigot -- it's not me saying that, it's your behavior.

^So because i find many of those posts humorous, then you consider me a bigot?

As for my behaviour, go look in a mirror, that is if you can find a reflection.

You sir, are in my opinion, treading on thin ground, when you quote the COC. Then go on to say my behaviour makes me a bigot. Jesus wept.

I would encourage you to do more reading about the variety of Hindu thought.

I think for many of the atheists here "religion" is more analogous to "nazism" than something like "science" or "gay."

FARIPs are more like funny anti-Nazi internet pictures, than funny anti-gay internet pictures.

Now, I know you think that premise is incorrect.

But, from their point of view, they are not being prejudicial about a class of innocent people, but are making a necessary critique of a great danger.

It depends on how you define "religion". .................................
............................................except where I found a religion's claims to be irrational or plain false, e.g. Hinduism).

I would appreciate an explanation here please.

I have no right, according to you, to find humour in religion because, according to you, I am laughing at falsehoods which should be corrected. Yet here you state that you consider some religions, which aren't your own, false or irrational. So a funny anti-Hinduism thread would be acceptable no matter what was said because in your opinion it is false.

Hinduism has over 1.09 billion adherents worldwide (15% of world's population)

Rather insulting for all these Hindus don't you think.

If you fit the definition of a bigot, then you are a bigot. And by definition, anyone who finds humor in slurs against others is a bigot, and attacks based on inaccurate or false information, regardless of what it's called, is a slur.

All I see in my mirror is someone working to uphold logic and accuracy. Any fair look at my posts will see I enjoy actual humor about religion, mine or someone else's, but I do not enjoy bigotry.

BTW, the only one who has called you a bigot is you, above here.

Hinduism divides humans into levels of value of their lives, in the caste system. That is irrational enough to disqualify it.

That, as some of your posts demonstrate, is ignorance. It might be reasonable if Nazis had ever founded universities, invented orphanages, established hospitals for the poor, fed the hungry, fought against slavery, opposed wars of aggression, and so on.

Now, I know you think that premise is incorrect.

But, from their point of view, they are not being prejudicial about a class of innocent people, but are making a necessary critique of a great danger.

An uninformed crusade is the most dangerous kind. That they can smear all religious people without distinction shows there is no "critique" involved, just prejudice. The amount of good religion has done for Western civilization is enormous, and ignoring that to focus on the immense damage caused by the abuse of religion establishes that it isn't about a critique at all, because critiques are objective.

Their actions are thus no different at all from people who insist that all atheists are murdering psychopaths because of Stalin, or can't have morals because there's n way to get morals without God. Both those are as patently false as the claim that the Bible is fiction -- they don't hold up under even cursory scrutiny.

So again, my disgust arises from seeing little difference at all between the FARIP thread and a drunken bar "discussion" by rednecks who "know" that Obama is a communist Muslim Kenyan.
