I’m cleaning my book closet out today because I’ve been having a hard time finding the books I’ve bought that I want to read.

This is the to-read pile

This is the pile I’ve read over the last year

I had three times that amount of books that had been read but I donated them to an addiction rehabilitation center a year ago.

So yeah. I have a problem.

One can never have too many books.

I currently have 137 books in my 'waiting to be read' stacks (I just counted). All non-fiction.

I read quite fast, but these are 'study' books, so it will take me a couple of years to get through them.

Meanwhile, I have seven more arriving in the next week or so.

I also read historical fiction, but I never buy physical copies of novels, I just read them on a tablet.

I divided them into two shelves. One has 20 books that I intend to read soon. There was 86 books that I still need to read but they’re on the future list.

All my books are fiction.

We share your 'problem'.

And we have kept many of them. In the last few years, we now box them and donate them to our hospital auxiliary.

I have plenty of books... Some might say too many. I'm somewhat of a quandary. Part of me feels like my future life would be simplified with fewer books. It would make moving easier. But there is also the thought that I'll probably want some books again, and it may not be easy getting my hands on a copy when that time comes.

In some ways, life would be easier if I did e-books. But I don't have a portable device. And I prefer buying a used book for at most (usually) a dollar or two, which I'll actually own, vs. $$$$ for a "license." And worry about the book being still readable at the end of my life. I trust even a yellowing paperback more than a standard e-book.

Then there are those unfortunate occasional times when I get a book I already have becuase it's better than the existing copy. But the existing copy stays, because it has something the new copy doesn't have. Oh, well I guess I'm not as bad a professor I knew who admitted having many copies of some books in many different editions.

I have about 18 feet of shelving full of unread books. Plus a couple of almost 3 foot tall sitting on the floor. I'm not sure I'll read all of them but maybe I will.

I took a lot of books to the local library several years ago. Cleared out about 40 feet of shelving.

I still buy books. I find something and yeah I want that, no, ain't buying Kindle. Because if the electricity is out, a Kindle is worthless. But I find books and I buy used. Might take three weeks to arrive. I'm not in a hurry.

I buy a few books a month, maybe three, usually fiction, and usually read them. A few books I save, but I had so many that I took boxes of them to Half Price Books to see if they wanted them. They give me some money or credit for many of them if they are in good condition and re-sell them at a discount. A few they don't want and I ask them to throw them out. I sometimes use some of the credit to buy more books there. I used to take some books to my library, but they don't take books anymore and got rid of many of their own. I feel better that I am not hording too many books and someone else might get something out of them.

With me, at least, it's "before I borrow more." When I see news if an interesting book, I submit a request for it online and it's soon available for pickup at my local library. They know me well.

Sometimes it tales longer. Like when there's only one copy of "My Policeman" in the whole county system and everyone wants to read it because of the movie.
