On topic, I don't find it offensive.

I do think that (((( we )))) read the shirts differently to them, though - we see it as stupid at worst, some sort of massive satire at best. They see it as something else entirely. In a way, everyone wins.

Also, being a white guy in Africa and constantly blamed for all manner of things from droughts to AIDS, I don't find a white pride t-shirt offensive either. I'm tired of being apologetic and held accountable and I'm tired of being treated like shit for the sins of the proverbial father.

Quite an interesting question for me to wake up to this morning. After some thought I might say yes that I think that "Straight Pride Designs" may be specifically meant to demean "Gay Pride" slogans.

So yes I think they are in some ways unnecessary & offensive on that point.

I believe you have some validity in your points. However, I think the nature of this beast (internet forums) is such that people just read the first post and maybe a few afterwards, answer the question posed, and move along to another thread. I don't think it's necessarily that people might learn something, indifference, or any other inconsiderate act. Rather, I believe it's just a matter of time and volume constraints.

Just my own thought, opinions, and experiences.

Second, you and I have different experiences of internet forums. I find JUB to be exceptionally non-interactive in this way, compared to other places I visit. I find the number of people here with fixed opinions appallingly high. This is the only specifically gay-oriented forum site I participate in, and also has a much lower average age of participant than others I'm active on. So it's not clear to me whether this is a gay community trait or a generational one; all I know is it seems to be a lot worse here than on other sites.

My guess in this particular case is that people who didn't participate in the fight for gay rights don't realize how fragile their existence is. These "Straight Pride" t-shirts are a public declaration of homophobia in a deniable way. The more homophobia becomes socially acceptable, the easier it is for people to deny us our rights and get away with it. Pointing out what these t-shirts really are, and bringing the full force of social disapproval down on those who wear them, is important to making sure we have gay rights going forward.

I remember when we didn't. I don't want to go back there. These little assholes are gonna get nothing but contempt and insult from me.

Usually when someone makes a great point or shows proof and validity of an argument it goes unnoticed. At the end of the day almost everything will be the same and people will still hold their old thoughts and biases. Most stop learning at a young age.

If I believed all that (and really, it's an act of faith that I don't) I would stop participating in JUB entirely. Whatever would be the point? I don't shout down wells, and I'm not that interested in other people's rants, or the opinions of people who won't defend their opinions (because people who won't defend their opinions tend to hold them for the most trivial of reasons (in the current thread, my guess is people hold the "they're harmless" opinion mostly because that's the opinion that doesn't oblige them to do anything, even just frowning at people who wear them)--I don't learn anything from interacting with them, and they aren't capable of learning anything from me).

As for people posting dumbass things in serious threads, that's what "on-topic discussion" is for, and it's the duty of the Mods to delete off-topic postings when they occur. But that's my opinion, and few of the Mods appear to share it.

I disagree. I think they're intrinsically offensive, and the difference between the two wearers you describe is that the first one isn't aware of how offensive it is.

Question for comparison: if some dumb kid wore a "GOD HATES FAGS" t-shirt because he wanted to freak people out and make them notice him, despite having no such belief or homophobic feelings himself, would that make the t-shirt any less offensive?

Obviously, I don't think so. I think it makes the kid an idiot as opposed to a real enemy of ours, but we should treat him like an enemy as a way of showing how idiotic it is to wear the uniform of the enemy. (Btw, to me 'treat him as an enemy' doesn't mean "bust his head with a brick" or anything. I'm a gentle soul.)

ETA: Just to complete that thought: I think that, whether you think the person is wearing the shirt to be a homophobic douche or not, it's important to treat him as one.

When you're a minority, it's not uncommon to feel under-represented and repressed, and when you're under-represented and repressed, you feel a greater need to celebrate what makes you unique in a positive way, whether it's with a TV channel or a Gay Pride Parade. Or even a "Gay Pride" t-shirt.

As it stands, straight white people aren't being repressed or under-represented and they haven't been since the beginning of time, so why would they need a "Straight Pride" or "White Pride" t-shirt? It's obnoxious. That's the same reason straight people don't need their own pride parade. They're already plenty represented on every TV show, in every magazine, in every romance novel, in every religion, in every song...
