  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Do you ever sneak in food or drink to the movies?

I'm going to ignore all the posts above.

In the 80's I used to manage movie theaters, so I know how much they need the concession revenues.

For a first run, top film, in its earliest weeks of release, the theater may have to send 100% or 95% of the box office to the studio. Doesn't leave much to pay the bills...

They bring it on themselves though. They are the ones that accepted the shitty contracts.

At one time the studios owned the theaters, but the US government broke that up.

It really isn't good for the theater chains, none have ever been a good investment if you were looking to buy stock. Theaters really were the losers after the anti-trust decision...

Also, what can they do? If they want Avatar, they're required to send ALL the box office to the studio.

I thought it was "good"...Early reviews said it would be "dark" and I felt it was...They made the "Wolf Man" as monstrous as they could without over-doing it..Benicio Del Toro is simply SUPERB and he's got that "calmness" that brings you into every scene...He's not over-the-top and he doesnt have to be.

After all these years Sir Anthony Hopkins can say one line and STEAL the whole scene...Sir Anthony is Brilliant and if "The WolfMan" is not forgotten over the next 10-months I hope he garners supporting-actor nods for 2011 awards season...."The WolfMan" Make-Up team will win Oscars in 2011...Awesome, just awesome job...

The "WolfMan" remake is worth the admission price and a trip to the concession-stand...

You liked it a lot more than I did, but I admit I didn't feel I wanted my money back like I usually do with movies.

It just seems to me if they were not so "greedy" they would move more product and make a bit more with a lesser price. People sneak it in so you know they want it, they just don't want to pay 2.5 times the amount they normally would.

More people would by a bottle of water for a dollar than five dollars. It would be better all around. Selling six bottles for a dollar will make you more than selling one for five.

To me it is simple economics, but their “greed” is getting in the way of a better way to make a profit. They want it all now, so they hurt themselves overall.

I defend them, because of the almost impossible position they are in.

But, I'm with you, they should be more innovative. Sell alcohol, do espresso, etc..

I was actually part of a group thinking of buying a theater here in Salem a few years ago. We found what you were saying to be true. We wouldn’t have made a “profit” and we were a nonprofit group.

We didn’t feel we could change up the way the industry works to make it work. It's a shame.

hell yeah i sneak food in. i'll bring store-bought bags of popcorn, pops, slushies. i'll slip it in under my coat or in my sleave. fuck their embargo.

and i movie poach (going from theatre to theatre)

it is true a lot of the big movies get most of the ticket sales sent to the studio for the first 3-4 weeks, and that's why the theatres love long runs like Dark Knight and Titanic, but most movies don't last once people hear how shitty it is. and yes that is a shitty agreement, but the theatres are kinda stuck, they can't just skip the biggest movies of the year

The deck is stacked against them.

As a Libertarian, I have to wonder...

What would our theaters be like if the studios still owned the theaters.

Party wise I am a Libertarian too and have been for years.

Personally I think their greed would show even more. They would limit showings and charge more I am sure. It would be interesting to know for sure though.

They could help demand better movies though. Start a movement, etc.

I see maybe one decent movie a year any more. They should try better.

I always stop at the grocery store and pick up a package of twizzlers.

My family used to do it just about every time we went to the theater. Stopping to the gas station to get what we wanted on the way there became a very important part of the ritual.

When me and a bunch of friends went to the theater once, I suggested the same thing and - since I had the most pockets - I was the designated smuggler. Good times, good times.

And the concessions would still be overpriced.

How do you know that?

The studios might run the theaters as some sort of "loss leader" just to get you into their venue and not into some other studio's theater.

I do. In fact, I did just a few hours ago. [hugs messenger bag]

Because it's standard practice that once you have someone over a barrel you fuck 'em. :)

Then why do major food chains sell you milk and eggs at a loss?

1) Most don't, they just make less profit precentage than on the rest.
2) To move product. It's a complete lose if it goes bad.

You do have a point though, but so does he. If nothing ever changed though, nothing would go back to the way it was. Because of that we will never really know.

Milk costs more than gasoline and is a fairly renewable source. :)
