all derogatory terms for minorities were at one point socially acceptable. Don't believe me bring a black guy into an intolerant grannies house for supper.

As for me I find it offensive and when I was in school I punched my friends for saying it. Not too hard but not to gentle. Left a bruise on one of my friends, she bruised easy though. Touch her for a few seconds and she'd be bruised from head to toe the next day :P Also one of my friends was talking to some of their friends and didn't notice me walk in the classroom, they said 'That's so gay' or 'what a fag' something like that I punched them in the shoulder and they fell off the desk in surprise :D But hey I told them when I came out I wasn't going to tolerate that kinda bullshit, told them what would happen if they said it in my presence and followed through. Now a days though, I hear someone say it, I ask them to repeat themselves, (strangely enough not a single person has ever caught on to the fact that it bugged me by me asking them to repeat it) I tell them I'm gay it offends me please don't use that language around me in a derogatory since again. They usually apologize and tell me they didn't know I was gay to which I respond "My being gay shouldn't matter, belittling gay people by contributing to the social acceptance of gay/queer/fag/homo as an insult towards another person/object, should be wrong regardless of whether or not a gay person is within ear shot. In the same way that if someone said the n word within ear shot of most people it would be socially unacceptable." Then they apologize again and tell me what they meant by saying 'that's so gay' and I tell them "Good next time say what you mean." Since I rarely leave my house except for work, hearing it at work from the same person twice means that they get reported.

Now that that is out of the way, I have to say that it is just a bunch of words. It only has as much meaning as you let it have. Its so sad that many people (gay and straight) allow words to master them, instead of themselves being master of the words.

I'm not personally offended when I hear it, but it does annoy me when stupid straight people say that. It's not because I'm uptight, I don't think there's a good way to "take it" when you have self respect. The gays are way too forgiving. I mean, would a black person shut up and smile when a group of straight people say "that's so black"? I'd like to see how many Hollywood movies would push that phrase...

It always just makes me think of them as illiterate and uneducated. If they would take the time to come up with a proper term to describe the situation or object instead of using terms that may be derogatory or offensive, I would think higher of them. I cant say "Ni*** turn" without a proper beating after all.

I do get pissed sometimes when this is said at work. Then again, no one at work knows that I'm into guys. Just goes to show how ignorant some people are. Not everybody is straight yet the default orientation seems to be "straight".

I don't get why most of you guess get so pissed off at people saying "thats gay".... I'm totally gay and dont get "offended" by anything....maybe we would be more accepted if we ourselves werent so steryotypical of straight people, thinking they are out to get us all the time.

it's not about them being 'out to get us' and I for one am not a typical stereotypical gay guy in most situations. It is offensive because when you ask them what they mean by saying 'thats so gay' they will almost always equate it with stupid, retarded, sick, or give it some other negative connotation. This tells us that they equate gay people with those things. Which shows disrespect for us as human beings.

It's the same as people using the n word. No one dares say the n word because they don't want to offend african americans. But just because our minority doesn't show in our skin doesn't mean that we don't deserve respect.

Just "a bunch of words" and "can't let it get to you" my ass. The ONLY way that word demeans anything it is applied to is by demeaning us. Its the association with homo/bi/transexuality (and what not) that lets people use that word in a derogatory fashion and as such must necessarily bring down the value of every queer so that the item in question might be lowered.

Without us first being lowered below the item it cannot be brought down, shrugging it off as a colloquialism of our spoken tongue only makes its effects worse. Whether or not you personally don't care doesn't change how the word works, and ignoring it is vaguely Orwellian.

Not really, I'd rather think of it as just another derogatory word for describing something as "Bad". I don't think the person saying it actually thinks the thing is "Homosexual".
Sure, there are other ways of looking at this that can make people insulted from this comment...but...I think I'm happier not looking at things in such a negative way.

occassionally, some of my friends (nearly all of them are straight) will say it, and then realize what they said & apologize.. i know they didn't mean anything by it - the fact that they apologize for it is awesome

i'm more likely to say something if someone i know says 'that sucks' .. but not because it offends me either, usually just to fuck with them... my usual reply is "does that means its a good thing or a bad thing?"

LOL I had the same issue, in fact had to read it several times.

While I am personally not offended by it I can see how it, indeed by nature, is offensive. It's a put down plain and simple. Just like saying "that's retarded"

The carelessness with which it is used, and the negative conotations behind the saying somewhat annoy me.

But then for some people it is just accidentally learnt behaviour.
I think some people just say it without really realising it.
Even I accidentally say it sometimes.
