Depends on who is asking, my mood, the time available, the value of the investment.

Ideally it's always worth reminding people that gay people exist and they assume people are straight at their own risk.

But as a practical matter, sometimes I just want the cab driver to get me where I'm going without having to educate him.

That usually leads to a follow up question of "why not?" after which point I tell them I'm gay.
 
It's a really rude and obnoxious question and usually comes from nosy older straight people. It's offensive because it assumes you are straight, monogamous, and actually want to settle down with someone already.

There is a bit of a gender gap in my area. so the question doesn't come up as much.
 
If I'm with someone, I say, no, I do have a boyfriend, though. If I'm single, I say no, I'm gay.

In the end, it's no one's damn business, lol. Hate the superficial chat while sitting there. When I was in college, a million years ago, living in an apartment, my landlord ran a hair salon on the first floor of the building, it was perfect, he knew what to ask and what NOT to ask.
 
I sometimes get the "what type of girls do you like" question. Got caught off guard a few times and just shrugged my shoulders.
 
It depends, I usually just say no.
But if they ask why, I say something along the lines of "the thing is I wouldn't want to have a girlfriend, but a boyfriend." I have yet to hear someone go on, like "so why don't you have a boyfriend then?". Doesn't seem as interesting to know as with a girlfriend.
