Well if we're going by "desecration" I believe you shouldn't shave or cut your hair because that's a form of desecration...
And I would refrain from cutting your nails or getting teeth pulled because that's how god made you so you probably shouldn't alter that either....
Oh yeah and try not to cut yourself because that could be considered desecration as well... you know...

..which would explain it - Canada has only controlled its own heraldry for a couple of decades - before that it was London or Edinburgh.

Anyway, I know coats of arms are usually something you'd know about if they have passed down to your line, but it is still an interesting family connection if you can find it.

I've always been open to the idea. I would if I found something with enough significance. I see it happening eventually.

I promised that I'd get a tattoo after I lost 100 pounds, and that was like a hundred and forty pounds ago... I've been going back and forth about what/where to get inked for like the past year.

I think I've finally decided, though. I'm thinking about a fluer de lis with "je me souviens" under it on my back left shoulder to honor my french canadian heritage (my family's basically been kicking it around Quebec since the 1600's)... it was down to that or "All are but parts of one stupendous whole / Whose body Nature is, and God the soul" on my forearm to honor my favorite poet, Alexander Pope.

The Fluer de lis is a good choice..It was on my unit patch in the Army..It's the oldest continually serving Cavalry regiment in the U.S. Army,serving in every war going back to the early 1800's..

I have one, my beloved Epiphone Guitar Company logo.

The Epi E and I merged into an indistinguishable conglomerate when I was but a wee lad of 17, literally half a lifetime ago since I'm nearly 35 now. I've had my Epi guitar since I was 18 and I finally had it inked for my 30th birthday.

It would be nice if people didn't immediately assume it was a Euro, though... on the plus side, me telling them what it actually is makes a great conversation starter down at the beach or in the gym pool or the steamroom.

Loki I don't have any tattoos and have seen very few that I could say I like on others. Remember that even though you get it on your back shoulder where you will see it only in a mirror, that others will see it. I like the idea of the fleur d lis to honor your family's long Quebec heritage though.

My problem with tattoos on others is that I think too many guys go overboard with numbers and size of them. Covering what in some is a gorgeous body with tattoos is such a shame I believe in accepting the body you have - and in your case, worked so hard to get. As you have written on some thread - maybe here - you have to learn to love yourself in order to love others. To me, loving ones self means accepting ourselves as we are without massive disfiguring.

Why is it a shame to paint the canvas of art that you seem to be revering the person as?

Why is it a "disfigurement" to you for a person to do what makes them happy? To do what they feel has meaning? I'm not talking about the folks that get drunk and get a koi tattooed to their thigh, i'm talking about those that do something to honor a part of their lives, their family, heritage, hobby, a quote that touched them to the bone?

I'm just trying to get why, in a MODERN society full of ideals that differ, that people see a tattoo as a disfigurement, a fad. I don't know why i'm asking this question, but i'm starting to really get bothered by this, and the fact that your post is so nicely written instead of the usual condescending snotty wave of the hand i'm used to reading on here about tattoos bothers me even more.

Khaos, read my post in its entirety. I told the OP I liked the idea of his proposed fleur d lis to honor his ancestry. I also said that I do not like them covering most of the body because I (just me, not others or you) view this as disfiguring an otherwise gorgeous body. I think that some carry it to extremes - again, my view to which I think you will agree I am entitled to.

And as for MODERN times with liberated views, let me point out that tattoos go way back to the days of sailing ships and whalers. Granted, the new techniques have improved the look from crude to more arty and are less painful but I would not consider doing that to myself. I would find a more personal way to pay tribute to those I love and adore.I have seen some real horny studs with tattoos covering one whole arm and side of his body and I find it a turn off for me

We all make choices in sex and bodies - cut vs uncut top or bottom - that is what makes us different from one another and adds a certain spice to our lives. I wrote this explanation of my views because you said it bothered you to read them in a non-condescending post.

I've got 6 tattoos. i love them all (kinda) I've got a tribal design on my back going up my neck:/ and a bull on my calve for my star sign. I've got chinese for "brother" on my wrist and the word "mum" on my upper end on inner bicep. My favourite tattoos I've got are silly. I've a camel on my big toe. And I've got a smiley face on my forearm. I love it. It cheers me up

Never have gotten one. I don't have anything against them - I'm just too capricious. I don't even like owning the same shirt too long, so I don't like the idea of being tied down to any one design permanently. I have entertained the thought of getting the Air Pirates logo from Talespin inked on me, and since I've entertained that thought for over a decade, I'd say that's the most likely one I end up with, if I ever do cave in.

As far as other people having tattoos - totally their call. I will say that have a lot of them, or a large design, proves very...distracting to me. In a rather neutral way. I don't find them hot OR ugly - I just end up staring at them instead of the person. But I'm easily distracted like that.
