radical faerie
I carry two cellphones at work, and I will even answer my personal cell when I have a customer in front of me. I tell the person, "I'm with a customer;" in such a way that the customer overhears. There IS such a thing as diplomacy, and I don't believe in a completely impersonal workplace. Sometimes the baby won't stop crying and the wife needs to vent - "I'll call you back, hon." or, "I'll stop by this evening, mom - love you!" I'm lucky, apparently, that being a human being is permitted at my job.
to derail with a rant of my own...
I answer calls while driving all the time - especially when running deliveries. My co-workers and bosses need questions answered that only I can answer, sometimes I need an address verified or to call the person who's getting the delivery - so I get sort of annoyed when people complain about cell phone use while driving. pulling out of and back into traffic would constitute more of a hazard for me...
I think folks should be tested on their ability to multi-task, and cell-phone restrictions placed on the driver's license of those who can't walk and chew gum at the same time - and i DO see a lot of those...
----people who slow down to 15mph UNDER the speed limit whenever they are on the 'phone, completely oblivious to the fact that they are pacing the car on the right and hanging in the blind spot of the car on the left and traffic across three lanes is backing up behind them...
you wouldn't arrest a person who can see perfectly well for not wearing glasses while driving...why bust the chops of those of us who CAN operate a cellphone and drive?
