It would be highly idealistic, and unrealistic to expect our privileged elite to explain to the general public how they managed so successfully to mess up our economy. The same would be true of most, if not all developed nations.
Our media is attempting to highlight the culpability of our political elite, and our plutocracy. Too little, too late.

You are an apologist. It is ridiculous that the rest of Europe is being forced to pay for the benefits of the lazy civil servants in Greece. That's 300 euros out of my pocket thank you. I deeply resent the entitlement attitude of the Greek civil 'servants'(thiefs). Retirement at 60?? Even 65 would be ridiculous given your states finances. It is 67 for in my country and rising, with the benifits getting lower. The people of Greece should be deeply, deeply ashamed. Comparisons to Germany and Australia are beyond silly. These countries pay their own bills instead of passing the begging bowl around in Europe. If it came to a referendum in my country, you'd be out of the union.

Stating facts in response to well rehearsed international media misrepresentations hardly makes me an apologist on behalf of any one.

Reforms are under way that will address Greek indebtedness. But this will take many years, and the practical support of other members of the EU. The bail out for Greece ensures that the lending institutions, and banks of several countries are repaid according to schedule. My own view is that 5 year bonds should be converted to 10 years, thus enabling the Greek government to spread the pain over a longer period. Social distress in Greece can ignite further civil disorder in other heavily indebted European countries.

Greek indebtedness did not grow over night. The EU has been well aware of Greek indebtedness for several years.

While German banks were buying higher yielding Greek government bonds, German industry was also enjoying its many successes in selling its products to the Greek government and the Greek private consumer.

The inertia of Chancellor Merkel as a result of a regional election in Germany, and German media influences have ensured that the financial markets, and speculators has now made it impossible for the Greek government to go it alone, and solve the problem of Greek government indebtedness. Our prime minister approached the EU for guarantees way back in October, 2009. Only now under pressure from the ECB and other EU luminaries is the EU taking effective action to protect other vulnerable EU countries and the common currency, the Euro. The EU has been less than effective in confronting this serious economic crisis.

Public protest is a legitimate tool to ensure that the reforms are just, and are fairly applied to all socio-economic groups. Not just those of us who can be easily targeted as a result of being salaried employees. Our plutocracy also needs to bear its share of the reforms. Our professional classes also need to burden some of the pain, for they are the very people who benefit so much by evading their taxation obligations.

Tax evasion, and tax avoidance is not monopolised by the Greeks. Just imagine all that money hidden away in Swiss banks, that is the property of so many German, and Dutch people who have not declared their full income. The Cayman Islands banks also have a reputation for all those Americans, and Canadians who have conveniently neglected to declare their full income to their appropriate taxation authorities.

Switzerland makes big money out of the secret nature of its banking system. That greed is the foundation of the discreet nature of Swiss bank accounts does inform us that tax evasion is not confined to the Greeks.

Again, we are not bankrupt. Greece is. Get a grip of reality and a perspective. I could care less about your financial state if you were not in the monetarian union. If your attitude is prevalent in Greece, then a huge mistake has been made. You should be allowed to default and get kicked out of the union asap.

No, the sad thing is, that this is indeed not a new thing. And your total lack of modesty and your sense of entitlment is even more saddening.

Europe is not responsible for the choices of the Greek people, but are now being blackmailed into solving your problems. There is no way Greece will be able to repay it's debts, nobody believes that, not the financial markets and not our parliaments, but we are left with no choice. You blaming Europe for your overspending is nauseating from the pov of those that are footing your bills. Show some modesty and maybe a small sense of gratitude.

The remedy to our problems must include the EU, as a result of Greece sharing a common currency with the EU. Our indebtedness impacts on the Euro, and the EMU. There cannot be any other way. The EU understands this and is assisting us accordingly.

No one blames the EU for our government's mismanagement of our economy, but it would be a naive person who would ignore the benefits that attach to those banks that have bought high yielding Greek government bonds. That naivety might also extend to those who believe that the loans were not spent on buying enormous amounts of German manufactured goods. The banking sector crisis does impact upon us, as it does elsewhere.

Unlike you I am not a prophet of doom. Time will tell whether or not an appropriate mechanism can be developed to address the debt problems of the Mediterranean debtor nations. I am sure that we Greeks are not the only problem that the EU needs to address. The Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese must be hoping that the EU can be a lot more pragmatic when addressing the greater issues that arise from the wealthy north, and the developing south of the EU.

Greece has been understating (if not blatently lying) about their already hoorendous deficits for years. This has only recently become public knowledge.

Wether a solution can still be found for the south and the monetarian union as a whole remains to be seen, I am not anywhere as positive as you. Merkel just lost her majority, mostly due to the Greek support package.

If you think the north is willing to fork over more money to the south while a majority of the Greeks are protesting against measures that should have been taken two decades ago you are mistaken. Do you really think, that while far reaching legislation in the north (far worse then Greece is proposing for themselves), cutting benefits and raising taxes all over the board to name a few, public opinion will stand for this kind of antics from the Greek population over a bail out we are getting black mailed into?

I think the Greek should grab the offer with both hands, and be grateful, it's more then the Greek are entitled to.

Chancellor Merkel attracted much criticism from EU financial ministers for her inertia in addressing a matter that was impacting on the Euro and other EU nations. I appreciate that Angela Merkel has to address her own constituent needs, but the German economy has benefitted enormously from German banks extending loans to Greece, so that the Greek government can equip the Greek armed forces with German manufactured trucks, tanks, artillery and our navy with frigates,and submarines.
Our private consumers are notorious for buying German manufactured cars. My own kitchen is Miele. My washing machine made by Siemens. My coffee maker by Rowenta.

Who loaned so much money to a heavily indebted nation? Ask the German banks. But with interest rates having reached 10 pct it comes as no surprise that the lending institutions were exacting an extortionate reward for their risky lending.

Bear in mind that the rescue package is a further loan, and not a hand out. With interest rates pegged at 5 pct. At this rate we can afford to repay our loans. The German government bonds attract just over 3 pct interest.

Most Greeks accept the time has arrived for some harsh measures. That some 50,000 (not 100,000 as reported by some in the media) Communist inspired protesters took to the streets is not indicative of majority Greek opinion.

The banking sector crisis teaches us that highly risky bank lending practices has endangered the economies of even the most developed nations. When next you pronounce judgement on the Greek government's poor record in borrowing, remember that the United States is also facing a huge debt burden. And when the British finalise their new government, they will have to face severe cuts in their government spending. We Greeks are not alone in having to clean up our self created mess.
