Re: Do you remeber when...

^ Never heard the 'fizzie' one. How about this one?

Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. (People used to say that, too.)

People still say this, most just don't know what it means (not referring to you).

My Grand father used to say "Colder than a Bankers Heart".

Actually, if you're talking about the 'fizzies', I've never heard of them before this thread. I don't ever remember them being available up here.

Re: Do you remeber when...

Maybe they didn't get that far North, Neil.

I've used "freeze the balls off a brass monkey" before.

I've also used "Colder than a Witches Tit".

Re: Do you remeber when...

^ Not surprising. We've got candy and candy bars up here that you don't get down there. Cereal, too.

Do you remember the Timex commercials with John Cameron Swayzee? "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking." Back then, the commercials were 'live' and in one commercial, the watch was strapped to the blade of an outboard motor. They ran it in a tub of water, then stopped the motor and lifted it out of the water. The watch was gone.

And then there were things like this:

"Every shaver / Now can snore / Six more minutes / Than before / By using / Burma-Shave"

Oh, and "Shave and a haircut 2 bits." (How many remember what '2 bits' is?)

Re: Do you remeber when...

$0.25 = 2 bits.

Comes from Pieces of Eight. Two bits = 1/4.

And, I remember the Timex commercials well - I tell people (mostly Red Cross Phlebotomists during the mini-physical) that I am like a Timex watch - I had a heart attack but never knew it. So, I was like a Timex watch - I took a licking and kept on ticking.

The Burma-Shave road signs were a paragon of traveling the US highway system before the advent of the Interstate system.

One of our local towns has a duck race in the canal every year (floating plastic ducks) as a fundraiser for youth activities - they post Burma Shave style signs to advertise it every year.

Do you remember Tom Terrific on the Magic Drawing Board of Captain Kangaroo?

Re: Do you remeber when...

Yeah, they did. They tasted awful. About as bad as Lik-Em-Ade or Lick-em-Ade or some variant of that.

If I remeber correctly, Lik/Lick-em-Ade competed with Fizzies but was powder in small, brightly coloured envelopes. An envelope probably sold for a nickel.

Allegedly, the powder was to be poured into a glass of water, but no one did that. They'd tear off a corner of the envelope and pour the contents into their mouths. After all, who licks a drink?

Barf. Awful, awful stuff.

Re: Do you remeber when...

That sounds more like Pixie Sticks.

I liked Fizzies as a kid - instant carbonated soda pop.

Did you ever go out to collect lightning bugs at dusk/twilight with a mayonnaise jar w/ the metal lid punctured with holes?

I know "you" doesn't necessarily mean the singular me, but although it's not too far north for Fizzies, it is for lightning bugs. I've never seen one.

Re: Do you remeber when...

I don't see many in the Rochester area suburbs, but we used to collect them on a Summer's day in the rural Indiana farm country - it was Northern Indiana, but still a little further south than here.

We do get them here, too, just not as many as out on the farm.

Do you remember when movie theaters showed double features and had cartoons and sometimes newsreels?
Do you remember drive-in movie theaters?
Do you remember when most families had only one car and most women (mothers) didn't know how to drive?
Do you remember when you could put a quarter into a juke box at an eat spot?
Do you remember when there weren't any freeways (highways) but had state routes with traffic lights and driveways on them?
Do you remember tail fins on cars?
Do you remember hard top cars that when you rolled down the front side and rear side windows there was no post?
Do you remember two tone cars and pastel shades like turquoise on cars?

The "shave and a haircut, two bits" was usually done or mouthed as a short 7-note instrumental...or a five-note instrumental with a 2-note "response"!!!

The Burma-Shave road signs were a paragon of traveling the US highway system before the advent of the Interstate system.
"Historic" Route 66 in Arizona (around Seligman) has a bunch of Burma Shave signs along it. Rather newish-looking, I am guessing they are replicas, but still way cool.

I saw them less than three hours after my avatar picture (the one being used currently) was taken.

Our metabolism must change, or something. I remember a number of things I loved as a kid, which will now almost make me barf...just THINKING of them. For example, Sugar Frosted Flakes. And then, on the other hand, I would even eat Brussels sprouts when I was a kid (which is almost unknown)...and still will.

I remember Lick-em-Ade, and I remember Pixie Sticks. I also remember candy cigarettes. They came in their own package.

And I remember gathering lightning bugs/fire flies. I lived in a rural town. Lots of open space, and thousands of lightning bugs.

Do you remember... Miley Cyrus? *shade*

Seriously, tho... listening to the radio, trying to record songs you like on tape... of course always missing the first few chords, and having the DJ talk over the last chorus and/or fade-out.

I was married for 6 years worked in manhattan and went into a large Drug Store part of the Duane Reade chain. When I got to the till with a dozen magnum the indian woman got on the mic and said over the loud speaker. Can someone give me th price on extra large condoms 1 dozen MAGNUM. Iwantd to die but at leats all knew I needed them for my uncut 7 1/2

While we reminisce about candy of our youth (maybe lambdaboy's post counts :p ), Paraffin Wax "pop" bottles that you bit the top off of to get to the sickly sweet syrup.

And, quite possibly the inspiration behind one of the Doctor's chief nemeses - the candy dots on a sheet of paper - just wrap around the octagonal salt/pepper shakers and, voila', instant Dalek - not that those of us stateside knew anything about Daleks and The Doctor back in the early/mid-60's. He was just a baby then, too.

How about candy cigarettes? As kids we used to pretend to smoke right in front of our parents.

Oopsie! didn't see gsdx's mention of these.

Do you remember the Original Miracle on 34th Street?

Bonus: Who played the Campaign Manager for the Judge?
(His most famous role, not necessarily his real name.)

I have it on DVD. Love the movie and have seen it countless times. The campaign manager was William Frawley, A.K.A. Fred Mertz and, later, Bub (My Three Sons). I don't remember his name in 'Miracle'.

I remember it well, haven't seen it yet this year.
