Had religion never existed, I don't believe the world would be much better or worse. If anything, it would probably be worse just for the fact that many people would never have been inspired (whether by fear or genuine faith) to good deeds.

Although many conflicts have been started over religion, I don't think that religion is really the root problem: the problem is always either selfishness, or fear of difference. If the excuse hadn't been religion, it would have been something else. Every "religious" conflict in history can be traced back to some manipulative leader or group mentality that ultimately had ulterior motives.

Without objective data and a test period there is no way to answer the question. Telstra, who gave you this question?

Counting all the conflicts from the Old testament onwards,
isn't there enough data?

God gave me this question. :D

I wasn't comparing the ism's with Science.
Please count how many Atheists there are in the entire World, as compared to how many who believe in God.....Thank you! Oh, and let us know the exact numbers. I do know that there were 1.18 billion Catholics on this beautiful Planet Earth at end of 2009.

That means there were 4.82 billion people who think catholicism is wrong.

Religion is a reason why we had war why there are extremists why events like 9/11 happened its all about religion gays are not accepted biggest cause is religion why do we need an explanation for everything we do and want to do I'm inspired by the beauty of life and I want to get the most out of it as I can

god is the reason for alot of peoples hatred towards others...i believe the world would be better off...
at least then Christians couldn't use god as their reason for not wanting gays to marry....they could actually give in to their forbidden longings ...

Islam is very close to the number of Catholics in the world, and everyone else is all broken down to the various other Religions, and Protestant Christians, etc.

So, no matter what, someone is wrong.

Considering what the pope just said about gay marriage, yeah, I'd vote yes.

Religion itself is not the problem.

Its people who use their religion to justify violence, persecution, hatred etc. that are the problem.

I went with I don't know, because truly how can we tell, so much of our history had been based on religion, it's like predicting whether it would rain tomorrow just basing it on the color of the sky today.

I lean towards "no" though because religion in its finest moments give people hope, which I think soothes the heart.

If there is no religion.
What will they use to justify violence ?

^^ Excellent point Telstra. There is no rational reason to hate... which is why the Prop. H8 supporters couldn't prove their case in court.

Violence and hatred come naturally to many humans, and little rationale is required by them. Just a little will do: 'those people are different' 'those people are dirty' 'those people are dumb' 'those people's habits make them less happy'....

Some might even try to shape the aim of inquiries like science or rational philosophy to nefarious ends.

What will they use to justify violence?

Whatever's available.

^Human nature has a well established habit of revealing the worse, and the best it can deliver without needing assistance from religion, or ideological philosophies.

Personally I feel that if a religion/ideology/philosophy can be used as a justification for hate/war/death then there is something inherently bad about it and it's adherents.

Then what about those who use Religion/Ideology/Philosophy for the right and proper manner that they were intended for? Do you judge them in the manner?

Please explain what the "right and proper" manner is and how one arrives at the conclusion that it is in fact "right and proper."

I think the OP has religion confused with christianity. I voted no because I think religion is good for people to have because it can create a sense of unity and moral guidelines.

Plus as a Pagan I don't ever reference the bible.

The problem really isn't religion, its blind faith that's dangerous.

BTW, the department of education want to teach ethnics but the religious (mainly the Christian and Muslim leaders) opposes it.
