  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Does anybody else think that Prides make us look like zoo animals?

^ did you pee on the carpet again??

Bad gargoyle, bad!

Where are all the anti-pride people? Have they decided that we faggots are completely untrainable, and don't realize how much we're hurting the cause?

Lex

IKR?!?

I'd thought the drag queens and leather men would be locked in a cage by now

Pride is all negative stereotypes. All of it. Most of the people who don't agree are the people running it and the people in the parades. Not a good way to represent ourselves.

Ah, here we have a person blaming other people for the stick up his ass.

No solution, no compromise, just whining. As predicted.

Who's next on the chariot of failure?

The thread asked a question and I gave an honest answer. If you can't deal with other people's opinions then go cry to your mommy. People who can't handle someone having a different opinion other than their own are pathetic. I will be more successful, have been more successful and have done more for gay rights than you ever have or will so who's the failure now? You wouldn't know because all you know how to do is cry cry cry. Instead of having a mature discussion on why people have different view points, you resort to insults. You're a waste of space and I'm done with arguing with a child. Ignore button.

I'm not a fan of the parade.

I see the point of Pride, but surely the message is easily lost in the perception of the whole thing. And if what you mean is lost in the way you convey your message, then surely it's a pointless exercise.

As Izzard points out, your message is understood in this ratio:
-70% how you look
-20% how you sound
-10% what you actually say

So if the idea is to get a message across, this is possibly the wrong way to go about it. If the idea is simply to have a big day out, then great.

I'm prepared to take a bit of fire for this opinion.

>>>I will be more successful, have been more successful and have done more for gay rights than you ever have or will so who's the failure now?

You betcha.

The biggest, strongest move anybody can make for gay rights is to be out, to be proud, and to be themselves. And if that means being a gay man in a business suit, a gay man in leather on a motorcycle, or a gay man in drag, then that's what they should be. If you feel gay pride parades are too "stereotypical", it's up to the "non-stereotypical" ones to get in the parade and march too, not distance themselves from it.

Pride does not make us look like zoo animals.

People treat us like zoo animals at Pride... that's a different thing. And it's something I resent mightily. As Jasun says, we're not doing this for them, we're doing it for us... they can come watch, they can come support, but they don't get to dictate or get in the way.

I'm an attention-whore, especially when I'm in drag, so I'm always willing to stop and pose with some tourists along the way. But I sometimes wonder what the caption of the picture is going to be... is it "Here I am with these fabulous drag queens we met at Baghdad Cafe" or is it going to be "Look at the freaks, Ma!" I don't get to edit, since I agreed to the picture, but I still wonder.

But you know what I want America to see when they look at us? I want them to see that we're happy. We like being nekkid or dressed up as the whim takes us, we like being young and we like being old, we like being all kinds of races and socioeconomic statuses and all. We like being outside and in the open. We aren't hiding, we aren't ashamed, and we aren't afraid.

best thing i've read in this thread. awesome!

and for the record if i managed to get a snapshot of you in drag and i? the caption would be something like "i feel divine just standing next to her!" :)

this isn't a pissing contest. if you have issues with pride then that's cool, you're entitled. just don't be bitter about it.

My greater problem with "Pride" is that it's just one more big corporate sponsored drunken party with ourselves, most of the time.

"I'm out and proud!" "Me too!" Woohoo.

And that's fine in and of itself - I'm just not participating in pretending it's something other than that.

I tend to skip the boring parades and get a good spot on the roof terrace (near the pool) of my favorite bar instead. Otherwise youre standing around the parade (snooze) and then standing around at the bar (snooze) and when youre done doing all that standing around you have no choice but to bottom because your legs are killing you.

i think that it is good for the gays b/c it shows that guys from all walks of life are gay and it isn't just about the queens that had the balls to show everyone that they were in fact gay.

i suppose it depends on where u r but i am in the Boston area

No more than Anti-Abortion or Anti-Gay protests etc make religious folk look like sweet, little inoccent Angels!

I agree 100%. I like the idea of it but not how it's done. It just looks like a big sex party which would be ok if they called it big gay sex party but they call it gay pride which is supposed to tell everyone what being gay is about. According to the parade, being gay is about sex, sex, sex, dressing up in womans clothing, sex, getting naked, leather and bondage, and more sex. There's more to being gay that these things and I don't just mean people who are not feminine. There's the whole emotional aspect of it missing.

Ummm did you read his response to my opinion? He made 3 or 4 insults to me just because he didn't agree. Of course you'd take his side though since you agree with his side of the argument and he's probably one of your friends here so you ignore his "bitter" comments. Whatever.

Why shouldn't gays be allowed to behave just as silly at their parades as Christians (or Pagans) do at Mardi Gras.....

or Irish at a St Patrick's parade?...

......Isn't that kind of what parades are for?

.

My thoughts exactly..

I'm curious... what the hell Pride are you going to? I've been going to SF Pride pretty regularly for twenty or so years, and that's not what I've seen.

Sure there's some sex, sure there's a lot of leather and a lot of exposed skin, and yeah there are a mess a drag queens (yours truly included). But there are also absolute acres of families and lovers and friends, grannies and babies and dogs, boring guys who work at banks, cute girls who sing in choirs, hot guys in their police and firefighter uniforms, community organization after charitable organization after political organization marching down Market in a big moving ocean of Gay.

Out of the twenty thousand people in the Parade, maybe a thousand are shirtless. But, of course, those are the people whom the media spotlight. Never mind the two trolleys full of Lavender Seniors, our community elders who've paved the way for the rest of us; the news just wants to see the half-naked hotties on the dance-club float. Don't look at the three hundred PFLAG moms bopping down the street, look instead at the five percent of the Dykes on Bikes who have the temerity to wear their bazooms on the outside.

They treat us like zoo animals, and your response is to change our ways?

Well, OK. This year I'll be sure to dress like Pat Boone.

The whole point of celebration is to have fun, be outrageous, and be provocative. We have plenty of other functions during the year when we are dead serious. Every other group has its day, week, or month to be silly. Why shouldn't we?
