  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Does anybody else think that Prides make us look like zoo animals?

^Nah, you actually offered something concrete.

Phew! Colour me relieved ;)

it wouldn't be much of a celebration in of itself.

...lets be honest. Not many people will "get" something that looks foreign to them; they take it at face value. Those brave enough to indulge become enlightened - or at the least, more aware.

I hadn't thought of it like that before. Good point.

Who gives a cracker what anyone who isn't a part of the community thinks.

This gets to what is probably the core of any friction: what is the point of the Pride event? Is it a celebration or something different?

San Francisco Pride says its mission "is to educate the World, commemorate our heritage, celebrate our culture, and liberate our people."

Seattle Pride says ts purpose is "To Coordinate and Promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender PrideEvents in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, which Celebrate the Present, Envision the future, and Honor the Past."

Pride NYC says it organizes events "to commemorate and celebrate the Stonewall riots."

So not every parade has the exact same purpose, and at least some indicate a purpose in educating others rather than just celebrating.

>>>Out of the twenty thousand people in the Parade, maybe a thousand are shirtless.

I think we're getting to the point here. Because the Denver Pride is about the same. Lots of community organizations, lots of gay-friendly churches, etc. And yes, some drag queens and leather daddies, too. But the belief of some people is that their presence in the parade is simply not welcome. Because it "sends the wrong message". I think they'd rather the sexy and weird folk simply sit this out, so that "people won't get the wrong idea". "The media will only show the guys in rainbow thongs and the drag queens, and everybody will think we're like that."

Or, more to the point, "everybody will think I'M like that."

Frankly, it's like they treat the gay party animals and leather daddies and drag queens like a retarded brother from the 50s - hide him in a room and don't let him out, so the world won't think anything's wrong with our wonderful family. Sorry - the very image I want to portray the world is "we're all kinds". And telling people to sit out goes directly against that.

Unfortunately that doesn't get you column inches or primetime coverage. It would be nice if the media didn't skew their footage so it looked like it was instead of just showing the flamboyant OTT ones.

During Pride weekends I am too drunk and having too much fun to pay attention to what others may think about me. Take your pictures, ridicule me, but I'm having my fun.

*catches up with the replies*

The discussion went a bit into another direction than I thought :/

Imagine if instead of one Pride/parade day, you had a monthly fair in your city, where various GLBT organizations can present themselves or sell things.

Would this still be a public attraction and food for the medias, or would this be so common, that people walk through and have a look, but don't make a big deal out of it?

I wonder what helps more for acceptance of homosexuality and doesn't make us look like something special:
- either one day and lots of media attention
- or more presence with less attention

It's both. If you're out.

The parade/event celebrates our uniqueness (and it's a uniqueness that involves sexuality and sex), just as St. Patrick's Day celebrates Irish uniqueness.

The daily lives celebrates mostly our commonality, just as Irish people seem common/normal at work or school when it's not St. Patrick's Day.

Does media coverage of St. Patrick's Day show only little girls in green skirts? No it highlights the wackier side. Same with gay pride (er, Stonewall Day).
