The film was annoying, schmaltzy and conventional (oh no, wait, it dealt with transexuality, it couldn't be that conventional^Huh? Your post makes no sense to me. I thought it was a great, hilarious and touching film, about outisders and the bond between mother (or father) and son.
My problem with the cover is that nowhere in the film does she appear like that. I've never seen a film cover where they use a picture of the actor where they look like themselves, not the character. A completely separate picture that has nothing to do with the movie. I guess they thought it'd be difficult to sell the DVD with a transgendered woman on the front, so they put that there.
I dunno, I just find it annoying.
). Felicity Huffman has talent, is very professional in his job (like Fionnula Flanagan) which is the least you can demand from anyone doing any sort of job but is not that easy to find: take DH as an example, where only two leading actresses are real actresses and the other are very professional bimbo-entertainers, good at their jobs, but wrongly considered as "actresses"... As for Zegers, he still was pretty enough to pass for a sexy young piece of eye candy. The film was annoying, schmaltzy and conventional (oh no, wait, it dealt with transexuality, it couldn't be that conventional). I agree it is a "great" film provided we agree "great" doesn't really imply much depth and significance.
It's not exactly that, I think. Rather than the American usually prefer to minimize some issues to make them more amiable; they would skim instead of dive and that's why their stories may seem rather shallow and silly to other people who don't feel the same need to take refuge in sentimental comfort and, on the other hand and as a consequence, they fail to explain and try to make understand the issue at hand to people who think they hold the whole truth about everything and who, even though would never accept any other point of view or reality contrary to their convictions, should at least be forced to deal with more complex reasoning and arguments if they want to make the opposite party respect their values, their "truths".Meh...it's a bit of homophobic IMO. Ok, not really homophobic but has a bit of a prejudice vibe to it.
