They are mostly so terrible. I like the idea of gay movies but everyone i have ever seen sucks. They always have one or more of these 4 problems: the movie is just cheap and poorly acted with horrible characters. the movie is some weird shit about the director's interpretation of life's meaning. the movie is about aids or has some other really depressing ending. or lastly the story is ok but the love scenes are awkward or nonexistent.... sorry this sounds so whiny but for 500th time ive wasted money on a gay movie that turned out shitty.

I have to agree with you on this. I couldn't even bother to go see Brokeback Mountain, I knew it would be a waste of my time, and from the reviews, I didn't miss anything. If they ever put it on the T.V. I probably won't watch for the same reason, a waste of my time.
Eventually better quality movies etc will be produced, it just takes time. 30 years ago there was almost nothing produced for the gay market.

I have no idea what reviews YOU were reading...

Have to agree though, that most gay movies suck. But that's mainly because so few of them get made. In proportion to how many movies about straight people get made each year, there are just as many bad non-gay movies as there are gay ones--if not more.

Luckily, now with the success of Brokeback Mountain, both critical and commercial, we might see studios be willing to take risks and put out good films with gay characters.

In contrast though, there ARE many good movies out there about gay people. Happy Endings is one that comes to mind, as well as this indie comedy called I Think I Do with Alexis Arquette (when he was still a man).

I also agree. Even if a gay movie is getting good than someone has to die or get sick. I have seen a ton of gay movies and yet to find one that I really love. Beautiful things was the closest to being a fav but the accents were so thick and the end was silly. I had real hope for the broken hearts club but no dice. When will a great love story come out with no weird shit, death,or extra silly plots?

I still love eating out. Guys are sooooooo cute, and I was all over the floor laughing. My roommate kept coming out and yelling at me (it was during midterms over the summer that I watched it).

i watched broke back mountain and to me it sucked........dont know what the fuss was about.

as far as other gay movies. one i really liked is Our Sons. that was a good movie i saw on Logo

There are some good ones out there but you have to really look for them. One of my faves is a french film "just a question of love". As for most gay films looking cheap it is because they are independent films. Major studios aren't exactly running out to make them so independent filmmakers are doing it themselves. Some of them could have gotten better actors but you can only get what you can afford. Creating a film can be costly big or small. I have to say though I am happy that more gay films are aiming for more positive stories than the depressing ones we have seen over and over again.

As far as gay movies go, Brokeback Mountain wasn't in any way like the crap that's been put out there.

Can you really compare latter Days, Trick, Another Gay Movie, with something that takes a gay relationship seriously, realisticly, and earnesty? My guess is no.

Go see it and at leas tthen you'll know that you didn't like it and that it wasn't in the same category with all the pop-gay filsm out there.

Go SEE these movies:

Priscilla Queen of Desert
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Philadelphia
Bound
Boys Don't Cry
Monster
Bad Education (Spain "La Mala Educacion")
Die Mommy Die
Burnt Money (Argentina "Plata Quemada")

I would rather swallow razor blades than sit through Brokeback Mountain again....

But there are lots of good gay films... Latter Days, Trick, Head On, Like It Is, Get Real, Beautiful Thing.....

What about "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion". You can't hate that one!

And don't even try to tell me it isn't really a gay movie.

I agree about the AIDS thing and the really depressing ending. The other stuff isn't so common.

This is the occasion for me to whore the movie "Cachorro" once again :)

I thought Mysterious Skin was an amazing movie. And I really liked Latter Days.

Are you kidding me??? Sure there is crap out there but there are great gay themed movies too!

I thought brokeback mountain was a huge letdown and there are movies out there that suck, but Beautiful Thing was beautiful, Hedwig and the Angry Inch had hilarious moments, Latter Days spoke to me because I grew up in a religion like that, Trick was cute, Another Gay Movie was funny, Eating Out was funny (though it had poor acting)... there are great movies out there.

Brokeback Mountain was overrated. The movie wasn't that surprising and in a way it was kind of typical. One lover just had to die. Why does someone have to die in a gay movie? Why can't there be a happy ending. I do admit some gay movies I have seen have beens shit. The acting is kind of bad in some because its low budget so they can't hire more talented actors. Or the story line is cliche. The movie in a way was very negative about gay male sexuality. For one thing there wasn't enough sex scenes in it. Hardly any passion. I didn't like the fact the movie was treating anal sex as though it were lust. Only one anal sex scene was in the movie.

Go see it and at least then you'll know that you didn't like it and that it wasn't in the same category with all the pop-gay filsm out there.

I totally have to agree. It's stupid to judge something as shitty you've never seen.

What about "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion". You can't hate that one!

I really love that movie but it's not a gay-themed movie. Romy and Michelle are no lesbians.

Brokeback Mountain was overrated.

Maybe that's the reason why so may (especially) gay people were disappointed in it. I didn't watch it with any expectations and from this moment it was my favorite movie ever.

And for those of you who want to see really bad gay movies:

Beefcake: God, that one really sucked and was terribly boring! Even as a gay man I was bored by seeing half naked men running around after only 15 minutes!

Jeffrey: It was just silly! The whole movie Jeffrey is afraid of getting AIDS and at the end he and Michael T. Weiss are playing with a balloon and everything is okay!? The most stupid gay movie ending ever!

of all those mentioned. i did like summer storm. get real is good but the ending is depressing.
mysterious skin was interesting i guess but the kid was molested and a prostitute which r 2 redundant gay cliches. the guys in latter days were hot and so was the sex. i think that is clouding people judgement of how many parts were just plain stupid. like him cuting is leg and passing out. and that weird singing shit...c'mon? eating out also has hot guys but makes no sense? some guys gonna pretend to be gay to be with a girl who isn't even hot and looks crazy?
i just want a simple movie with a pretty simple story. that isn't about a tranny, a hustler, a crackhead, an AIDS patient, a pedophile (or victim), or a horrendous actor who can't pretend to makeout with a guy. a story where dude meets dude there's problems along the way but they kiss and make up before the end. is that too much to ask?

If you rent a 'gay' movie cause there's a hot guy on the cover, your gonna get the same crap a straight guy does when he rents a flick with a hot girl on the cover.

So try these instead

C.R.A.Z.Y (French Canadian Film)
Breakfast on Pluto (Cillian Murphy is a revelation)
L.I.E.
Monster (Charlize Theron)
Gods and Monsters
Mysterious Skin
The Hours (Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep)
Hedwig
Waiting For Guffman (Christopher Guest)
Far From Heaven (Julianne Moore)
Maurice
