Does anyone read books?

Currently reading the sword of truth series and am also a huge fan of The Drizzt books! Cant wait to read Gauntlgrym!

Speaking of the detective books... anyone know the series where the detectives have super powers to solve murders and other cases?

Try the Nightside series by Simon R. Green (first book: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Something-Nightside-Book-1/dp/0441010652/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1292377218&sr=8-1"]Amazon.com: Something from the Nightside (Nightside, Book 1) (9780441010653): Simon R. Green: Books[/ame]) Very quick reads, very entertaining. The author isn't the best writer, and he can get a bit repetitive, but the plots are very amusing and the dialogue is usually quite funny. The series is about a private detective who works in the Nightside (which is kind of like a magical and seed London) and has the ability to find anything. It's urban fantasy...lot of magic/weapons and typical high fantasy creatures in an urban setting.

I also recommend, with hesitation, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series (first book: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Storm-Front-Dresden-Files-Book/dp/0451457811/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1292377397&sr=1-2"]Amazon.com: Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1) (9780451457813): Jim Butcher: Books[/ame]). It's about a wizard private detective in Chicago. The first five or so books are quite good; interesting plots and characters. They get bad after that, though. Butcher also isn't the best writer.

Hope that helped a bit!

Re-reading Tales of the City, whilst reading The Handmaid's Tale and Last Summer.

I have a very short attention span.

I love Tales of the City. Maupin is great. I've only read the first collection...I'm gonna try and get through a few more over winter break. They're such easy and entertaining reads. Have you read The Night Listener by him? It's enjoyable.

Along with INVISIBLE MONSTERS by Chuck Palaniuk and LOST SOULS by Poppy Z. Brite (the two best gay novels ever written as far as I'm concerned) it's one of my top three favorites of all time. I re-read each of them a couple times a year I'd say.

I love, love, love, Invisible Monsters. Chuck is a god and that novel is his crowning achievement (at least in my opinion :D)

Re-reading the Harry Potter series now cuz I'm a nerd and I hadn't read them since the seventh book came out. I missed them...

I agree, Chuck is a god and INVISIBLE MONSTERS is indeed his crowning achievement. You should also try LOST SOULS and DRAWING BLOOD by Poppy Z. Brite--would be required reading for all gay men if I had my way (I mean, if you like horror/vampires and/or dark fantasy, that is.)

I liked it a lot. While disturbing, it wasn't as fucked up as I'd expected from reviews. Honestly, I thought some of the stuff in Preacher was just as disturbing, if not more.

PREACHER was fantastic. I don't recall anything disturbing about it, tho.

currently about half way through 2666 by Roberto Bolaño. it's amazingly brilliant but also really long and my busy work schedule does not lend me the time i'd like to spend with it. i try not to read more than 1 book at a time anymore so i'm less distracted, but i've also been reading through You Get So Alone At Times That It Just Makes Sense (a book of Bukowsi's poetry, which i LOVE)

I read Junkie this past fall. I liked it. I've been meaning to pick up a copy of Patti Smith's book.

I'm currently reading Neon Angel by Cherie Currie. I've been a fan of The Runaways since age 13.

Currently, I am reading Last Words, posthumous biography of George Carlin. I will always miss his acerbic wit.

I expected Gregory Maguire's Wicked to be a lark, and probably sappy. It's not. It has a calm, melancholy substance and Maguire's gifted with description.

:D

I'm finishing the Patti Smith, and I highly recommend it....Any choices you'd think I'd appreciate? Always interested in other's favorite books....(*8*)

Sometimes I feel as though I'm the only person with virtually no interest in sci-fi or fantasy as genres - not just from this thread but including other sites as well.

I hope your disinterest in sci-fi/fantasy as a genre won't put you off from good literature otherwise so categorized.

A few years ago I read Cat's Cradle and decided to read some more books by Kurt Vonnegut. I'm currently reading Player Piano. It's making me paranoid that my job/career will eventually be replaced by a machine or robot. I read Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan earlier this year also, really random story line but very enjoyable. Anyone else a fan?

I also read Genome by Matt Ridley this year, one of the best non-fiction books I've read in a long time. I really recommend it.

I'm about to start a Doctor Who novel. But, I've read some really good ones.

Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of The West
Son of A Witch
A Lion Among Men

Rainbow Boys
Rainbow High
Rainbow Road

Sarny

The Warriors of Alavna

More to come Because I cant remember what.

I've read most of those...I don't find Gaimens short stories particularly memorable, although people endlessly praise him.

They're not memorable. I read that Smoke and Mirrors anthology as well and I'll be damned if I can't remember one of them. Did enjoy Stardust though.

But what I'm really anticipating is the third book of the Abarat, by Clive Barker. :)

I suppose not -- I enjoy time travel themes, if that's a sub-genre?

I'm happy that other people enjoy other worlds and such, but it's not anything I've ever been able to get into.

What do you think about alternate histories? I've only read a couple but am always on the lookout for a different opinion.

As far as Wicked goes, Yes, the book is a bit depressing, but you should read the next two.

Howl's Moving Castle? There's a book? Is it a novelization of the movie or is it an original book that the movie was based upon?
