Does being gay make you "special"

When I first realized I was gay I knew that I was a member of a very small minority (in terms of openly, and exclusively, gay men) of the general population. Growing up in the bible belt; I also knew that I would face no small amount of discrimination and recrimination because of my sexuality.

I was right.

So I decided to view my unique status as a gay man as a special gift. Something that set me apart from, but not less than, the vast majority of people around me. I chose to see being gay as special, and hold that close to my heart, when I was assailed, and sometimes assaulted, for an aspect of my personhood I did not choose. There were many lonely and painful times when holding that specialness close to my spirit was all that sustained me when much of the world around me seemed focused on trying to convince me that I was broken, a mistake, or an unwanted perversion.

Yes. For me being gay meant being special. And giving myself permission to feel special helped me survive when too many like me did not.

This confrms my point. I see gay, straight, bi all as equal. Doing or achieving somethins and then stating "I am so proud that I did this considering I am gay.." makes me sick.

Do not shout for acceptance and in the same voice demand special treatment...

No, they're no different from anyone else. That's what we kept fighting for, right? To prove that we are equal.

It is my belief that we are fighting for equality despite our differences.

It will be a beautiful day when what makes us different unites us, not separate us.

To be honest, I detest the guys who make an issue of their sexuality. It's 2012. The large majority don't give a flying fuck.

That's why the whole "Gay Pride" thing doesn't appeal to me. It's just an excuse to enforce horrible stereotypes further in my opinion. I don't look at Pride and feel proud. At all.

^ ..| fair enough.

I've heard an (apocryphal?) theory that the American Indian tribes would have a gay shaman/witchdoctor who supposedly had special powers as he was separate form the standard tribal behaviour of fornicating and abusing the squaw.
