So, I can either afford a 1-bedroom in crack central 1 km away from where I want to live, or I can afford a studio smack right where I want to be.

After threats of friends saying they'd never visit, I'm leaning towards the studio, but I'm wondering about decor and the bed. I've seen people try to hide the bed with room dividers, and other people just try to make it blend in.

What's your option? Hide the bed or display it proudly? Or move to a real apartment in crack central?

i would go for the best neighborhood, it has always been about location.
 
For studios, there's about 20 buildings to choose from in my price range in the area, if not more. Here's an example of one of the listings, but most other studios are a little bigger:

If you can find a studio with a balcony it is better than a one bedroom without.

As long as it's a decent size studio where you can have a bedroom area and a living room are you are okay. My one bedroom is only about 430 square feet (some studios are bigger than that). My neighbor has the same size, but his is a studio. But I'm 3 short blocks from the beach and I have a patio area.

Both units have balconies. In fact, I'd say the 1-bedroom has a much better view because there's no other high-rise buildings blocking the view of the skyline. The only problem is that the intersection there is notorious for sketchy crack addicts.

It's so bizarre that an area changes so much in just a ten-minute walk.
 
Just say no to crack, and stop dating pussies. If your guy is afraid to come to your place, do you really want to be with him anyway?

You only live in a shitty area if you can't afford anything better. Go with the studio or keep looking. When I lived in the northeast all I could afford was in a so so area. In Florida it's cheaper to live in a nicer area.

Yeah, you can divide it if it's 400. Recently I stayed in a motel room that was just a bit smaller than my whole apartment.!oops!

The tall grey / brown towers are the ones I'm considering. Beside it, the church serves the homeless. Just at that corner, there's community housing. In front of the apartment complex is an incredibly destitute run-down victorian rooming house that should be condemned.

At night, one can't go past the intersection to the North without being offered crack.
 
I also think the neighborhood is slightly more important than space... though safety issues are less of interest to me than accessibility issues... I mean, is there gunfire in the night? Or just sketchy neighbors? Can I park my car? Can I get places without a car?

Personally, I'd rather have a place with good neighborhood access than extra square footage in a place that is remote from the centers of my life. But then, for me, closet space is more an issue than either size or neighborhood.

As for the bed, get a daybed... a trundle bed in case you have "overnight guests" a lot. With a lot of pillows, it works like a couch and then you can just pull a blankie over you when it's time to go nigh-night.

I have a sort of futon from IKEA that I absolutely love... it's a very comfy little couch, and if I need to spread out to sleep (which I don't, I prefer to sleep on a couch) I can lay it flat and it's a double bed. It's called the Beddinge Lövås:

There are other issues to consider; what is the quality of the apartment?
Is there enough daylight? How about the plumbing? (I don't know about where you live, but here it pays to get an appartment with the plumbing fixed). etc.

The seperate bedroom is ideal since it requires minimal energy, should you be faced with visitors.
The second best option is some kind of a daybed that doesn't require intensive transformation to be useful for sleeping in.
Your best option is simply having a furry blanket over it that you remove at night.
