Elena Kagan Nominated to US Supreme Court [MERGED]

Re: Obama to choose Lesbian as Supreme Court Nominee

It's not my defense, so don't even try to go there.

Of course it's your defense. You put it there.

The confirmation environment is toxic. It has been since the democrats fought tooth and nail against every Bush appointment, and it will continue to be for the near future.

You and your fellow Republican apologist have a disagreement. He says Republicans believe elections have consequences and approve Dem nominated people Obama puts forth. You, however, say the Republicans are getting back at Dems by blocking people Obama puts forth, including the leader of the TSA.

Which is it? Are the Republicans cooperating or getting revenge? You boys need to confer.

Re: Obama to choose Lesbian as Supreme Court Nominee

You're saying Republicans are blocking appointments as revenge?

Is that really your defense?

At the end of Bush's first year there were 70 appointees awaiting confirmation. One year into the Obama administration, there were 177.

When Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to blow up a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, the TSA had no leader, because Erroll Southers (an airport security chief in Los Angeles and a former FBI agent) was one of those still pending confirmation.

But what's national security, in the face of Republican revenge?

Erroll Southers? You mean the guy who withdrew his name after admitting he lied to Congress? That guy?

It is always nice to tell half truths. Get off the leftie blogs and show a modicum of original thought.

What is the average wait length of the nominee? How many are held? Who is holding them? Who schedules the hearings?

Of note, from AP: Last year, the first of the 111th Congress, there were a record 112 cloture votes. In the first two months of 2010, the number already exceeds 40.

That means, with 10 months left to run in the 111th Congress, Republicans have turned to the filibuster or threatened its use at a pace that will more than triple the old record. The 104th Congress in 1995-96 — when Republicans held a 53-47 majority — required 50 cloture votes.

You may say he lied.

Sothers, relying on memory of circumstance more than twenty-years ago, he presented the facts as he knew them. He later stepped forward to correct the record.

That's a better record than almost anyone in the Cheney administration.

There were TWO failed cloture votes in 2009, most passed overwhelmingly, it is often to force a recorded vote vs. unanimous consent.

There has been one failed cloture in 2010 and one ongoing. For the failed cloture Obama did a recess appointment.

Don't you bother to look at facts? Do you just take what you read at face value?

On January 10, 2010, Southers announced his withdrawal from his nomination to lead the Transportation Security Administration. [Wiki]

Speaking of delay~ 45 days later … Who is Obama’s 3rd TSA nominee?

Scooter Libby had a different recollection from Tim Russert and his defense team wasn't allowed to present evidence of Russert's faulty memory so he got 30 months.

I am sure it was easy for Southers to forget he had misused FBI records to check up on former boyfriends of his ex-wife. I'd sure try to forget misusing FBI databases.....

I'm trying to look at your claim that Repubs cooperate with Dem presidents vs the other claim that the Republicans are getting revenge by not cooperating.

Did you look at the cloture votes? Of the 35 instances of where cloture was invoked, almost half had 70 or more votes, over 1/3 had over 80 votes. That is bipartisanship.

And again. Ginsberg was confirmed 96-3, Alito 58-42. Which was bipartisan? Even Sotomayor got 68 votes.

How about your ridiculously laughable claim that 'democrats work with republican presidents'?

He won't admit that democrats are as partisan as ever, and have played politics with nominations and appointments since GWB got elected. [Text: Removed by Moderator]

I'm sorry, but weren't you just claiming the Republicans are getting Democrats back for being disrespectful?

Have you changed your mind?

It actually goes back to Nixon and Reagan.

I didn't say that, respond to my points.

I didn't ask you about it. I asked the person who said it. Check the attribution again.

I'll respond to your posts if, and when, I care to. But you might consider asking in a way that would make me want to answer you. *|*

I know you weren't quoting me, but you were ignoring my points. I usually take that as a lack of a good comeback.

Sorry my replies aren't friendly. Being condescending and sarcastic are two thing I am working on. { to not be that, not to get better at them :) }

I wasn't trying to ignore your particular points. I was just ignoring you altogether, but I did want to correct your last error because it involved me.

Sorry my replies aren't friendly. Being condescending and sarcastic are two thing I am working on.

Okay.

Re: Obama to choose Lesbian as Supreme Court Nominee

Its payback for Democratic disrespect during the Bush admin. You reap what you sow, and the dems are reaping it big time when it comes to appointments.

So at a time when the country is involved in two wars, and the gravest economic crisis since the Great Depression, you endorse obstructing the President's appointments, delaying needed legislation, and generally trying to prevent majority rule, for pay back. If Democrats behaved the way Republicans do, the country would be completely ungovernable.

Of course, as I pointed out in another thread, a Conservative Republican said of the Republicans:

Republicans are the people who say government doesn't work, then get elected and prove themselves right.
P.J. O'Rourke.

I don't endorse anything. I'm telling you what's going on. The Democrats HAVE and CONTINUE to behave in the exact same manner. If you can't see it, that's no one's problem but your own.
