Ellen Degeneres [merged]

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

First an email. Then a phone call. Then a lunch together... Then his house. Then his bedroom. I see where this is going.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

This is exactly the point I've been making for years. It's not the Bible thumpers we have to worry about. There really aren't that many of them. What we need to watch out for are the uneducated masses...the majority of the country who just plain don't give a shit. They don't particularly care if gay marriage is legal because it doesn't affect them in any way. They have no investment in equal rights. These are the people...the ones with no predisposed hatred but simply do not know any better...who will make the difference in achieving equality.

If this person can have such a life-changing revelation simply from watching Ellen, it proves that there is hope. It proves that we need more people like her. We need normal, everyday gay people to take the spotlight and enlighten those uneducated masses and show them how influencial they can be. If they can be taught that every harmless gay joke, everytime they see nothing wrong with discrimination, every utterance of the word "faggot" adds up to a severe and deadly problem, then things can and will change.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

i am not an Ellen fan....not because i dislike her....i am just not at all connected to television pop culture....i catch only glimpses of Ellen or any of the dozens of other talk and "reality" television shows...

but after reading your posting i will certainly give her my attention....i had no idea that she enjoyed much popular legitimacy.....thanks....

and, just WoW....words fail me to express my delight for you....i give my bullies from school days absolutely no thought (and so long ago!), but your story is awesome...

best wishes for both of you!....

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

What an awesome story, and I agree that it's the uneducated masses changing their views that would help solve this problem. Especially in high school, people are just too young to know any better because society (and in many cases their families) have enforced a stereotype that gay is bad.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Thanks for such a positive story. If there is a way, I'd let Ellen know (through e-mail, obviously) the impact that her comments had on this one person. I think she would love to know concretely that she made a difference in your and his life.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

I just got off the phone with him...

wow you guys, he really is... freaking out over this...

We talked for a bit. I told him I put the letter here
"...that sounds like..."
"yeah, it's a gay site."
"so you are gay?"
"yep."
"Man I'm so sorry," and goes into this explanation.

I go "guy, dude, for real. You have my forgiveness." he said he couldn't understand how I could be so cool with it and I gave a little discourse on how I view the situtation as a devout Buddhist."

"no way!"
"what?"
"you're buddhist!?!"
"yes."
"That is so awesome."

LMAO.

So I told him to meet me up at this resturant by my work after I get off tomorrow so we could talk.

before I hung up he goes again "man you have no idea how sorry I am."
"Not as sorry as you're gonna be if you keep apologizing, that's starting to get annoying." he laughed. so we'll see how it goes.

what a wonderful posting. Orion you have really handled this entire matter with a lot of understanding and class. well done...|

i hope your meeting goes very well and you will keep us posted as to how things go. although actually that would be intruding in your privacy and space - maybe it is something we shouldn't know](*,)

Re: Ellen Degeneres takes a stand for gays

Ellen's message is right on target. We need visibility beyond stereotypes as doctorsun mentioned above. Ellen has a large audience and she was able to convey a powerful message in just a couple of minutes. Bravo, Ellen!!

Thanks for posting the video, DMode4Life!

Re: Ellen Degeneres takes a stand for gays

I truly hope Hollywood saw that. Perhaps there won't be any more 'Chuck and Larry' trash in the theatres.

I especially liked the way Ellen took it from laughing at gay jokes to murder.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Neat post orion. both ellen's clip from the other thread and this one made me tear up. tell him it's great of him to do this.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

wow, great story!!

once, my dad called me up after watching Dr. Phil or some such schlock (mind you, I've been on Oprah - on the guest panel - with peewee herman's twin sister, no less) and told me that he'd come to the sudden realisation that i didn't choose to be gay.

Orion, thank you SO much for sharing that story with us here at JUB! You made my week!

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Yes, it is a great post, And you are a great person. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Thank you for sharing that Orion... the way you handled this says so much about your values, your nature and who you really are. And the fact that you chose forgiveness and understanding... they are 2 of the most powerful things we have at our disposal... right here and now you broke what could have been a cycle of hatred forever. Congratulations mate!

Its ironic that your school mate says he knew what he was doing was wrong. The defense of hes only a child can only wash so far... the youth of today are far more world wise than their parents... technology has seen to that. How is that we live in a society where even this guys moral compass was telling him that he was hurting you and yet it was ok to keep at it?

Theres no doubt the only way to stop this is to make it uncool. Kids only understand peer pressure and so if people like Ellen can make it seem wrong then that will go so much further than a teacher or parent. More power to her.

As for you Orion, mate I think you have personally created a convert and crusader for gay rights out of your school mate - I'm not suggesting he'll wear a rainbow shirt everyday but his ignorrance will be shattered - and those are the people who make a difference, those who have had some sort of epiphany. I hope the meeting goes well and that he finally sees you for the awesome guy you are... not just the gay kid at school!

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Thanks for sharing such a great story. It simply amazes me how certain television personalities can have such impact on viewers in such a positive way.

Kudos to you for handling everything so well.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

This is wonderful. My heart is warmed by this. He and you both deserve enormous credit.

I particularly liked how you phrased your forgiveness. Forgiveness isn't something you deserve; it's something you're offered out of compassion. And while it's easier to be compassionate to a deserving person, it's not strictly required!

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Well what do ya know? People do change. I am thoroughly, thoroughly impressed. Dialogue like this should definitely be more encouraged. Thanks for sharing this Orion.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Great story.

Although you should tell him that forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting and that hopefully he'll teach his kids better so they will never discriminate or make fun of anyone for being different.
