Ellen Degeneres [merged]

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

This is a great story and hopefully more people were impacted by ellen's opening.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

This thread made my day, my week, my month! (There's a lot of March to go yet, too.) Hope and change often comes one person at a time. As with Mike_n_herrin, both of these affected me emotionally, in the best possible way.

You are handling it so well and so gracefully, too, OF. Your letter to Ellen may even inspire her in ways we can't predict.

Anti-gay behavior and speech won't entirely vanish from the world anytime soon, but we now know this small corner of the world has become more enlightened and aware, thanks to you having shared the events with us.

Re: Ellen Degeneres takes a stand for gays

Up until a few moments ago, I have to admit that I hadn't heard about this at all, and I'm saying this as a young man who checks news websites every day.

I commend Ellen for bring up such a delicate and emotional issue, and succeeding in letting people know about these types of events, where traditional "media" fails.

While Ellen does mention the idea of starting with gay joke, leading to bashing, and then leading to the worst possible outcome: I think that the idea of how these types of stories are portrayed in the media also brings up a good issue of differences and adversities that we face as a community.

Again, thank you Ellen for bringing this type of story to both a national and international level; where as otherwise it would not have generated the type of world wide acknowledgment that a story like this needs.

Re: Ellen Degeneres takes a stand for gays

Up until seeing that video I was unaware of what had happened to that 8th grader. It made me tear up....how can showing someone affection and wanting them to be your Valentine be so awful it deserves death? If you're not gay, fine....at least be flattered SOMEBODY thinks you're attractive and politely say it's not your cup of tea (listen to me....I talk like 8th graders are capable of such behavior).

My esteem for Ellen grows exponentially....first her heartfelt plea in regards to the dog adoption gone wrong and now this genuine request for equality makes me think this woman will do more for gay rights than we will ever realize.

Re: Ellen Degeneres takes a stand for gays

I have always been a fan of Ellen She's just great all around. And I think it's great she's talking about this issue and bringing attention to it. You go Ellen!!! continue to do what your doing...|

Re: Ellen Degeneres takes a stand for gays

The Monday talk shows aren't here yet; there's been a weekend since her comments.

I'm curious whether Rush, Faux News, etc. are going to pick up on this story and ridicule it. It would fit in with their style. The latter channel has had their roster of Friday night shows, but they just might wait until Monday when more people are watching.

Ellen's comment can't do anything but help to chip away at the homophobia that still exists, though even with its intensity it's only a baby step.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Guess I couldnt do this back home in India.

Its the general climate of openness on TV - and the great lead by persons such as Ellen that seem to matter here as elsewhere in the west......

Also the class with which you handled this Orin ( together with Ellen's own great sense of honesty) - will teach your new friend and through him perhaps many others - to deal with us with a phenomenally high degree of respect.

Kudos

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Wow Orion, that made me choke. I hope you and the guy ended up in an Ellen episode to air your story.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Orion...you're an amazing person. You even told him how to balance his karma.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

and not to toot my own horn I think I said the wisest thing that's ever come out of my mouth.
"I've already given you my forgiveness, wholly and unconditionally. Apologize to yourself now. You may not be ready to forgive yourself for your actions, but apologize none-the-less. In time you may be able to do so... perhaps after you raise your boy to have respect for every living being as we all should, then you might be able to."

i think what you told him will give him food for thought for quite some time. if he pays heed and raises his child with that lesson in mind? well, the world would be a better place if everyone raised their child with that life lesson in place.

good for you. (*8*)

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

OMG, I'm seriously touched. Indeed, I feel that all of the old prejudices in our society are dying and your story serves as proof of that. A lot of us have been able to come out and have acceptance from our families and friends. For that, we are truly lucky. Orion, this is a great experience for you and I'm truly happy that you are able to completely forgive him. I believe the band Nickelback said it best in their song, If Everyone Cared, "As we lie beneath the stars, we realize how small we are. If they could love like you and me, imagine what the world could be." Indeed, if everyone could learn to love and accept everyone, imagine what the world would be like. That's a world that we all would love to see.

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Glad it well well Orion...

This is truly a case of what you give you get back... not from his point of view but yours. The way you live your life, go about your business and the way you treat others is refelcted by how you ultimately are treated.

Call it karma or fate or pure dumb luck, but this happened because you deserved to happen Orion, nothing more nothing less. Awesome job!

Re: Ellen did make a difference!

Orion thank you for sharing that truly beautiful story.
I am sure that if he was affected by Ellen then others
were as well. It shows that one person can make a
difference. I'm sure she will be glad to hear of it.
I really do admire the way you handled the whole
thing. (*8*)
