Hello.

Does anyone know about these drinks called Ensure?

My sister had her wisdom teeth removed 2 weeks ago and my Sir recommended that something like Ensure would be good for her. He also said that I should even try it since I have some really bad bone problems and they would be good for me. I tried two. One vanilla and one chocolate. They were immunity ones I think. They tasted pretty good. I got a 6 pack of these at kroger last night. Can't believe how much they cost to order them online.

After looking at the site I think the one that would be best for me is the calcium one. I just have so many pains with bones, back, and neck that I probably need as much calcium as I can get. And I know I need to go to the doctor sometime.

But I was just wondering if these drinks really do what they say. They surprisingly do taste good. I went to the site and you can even chat with a nutrionist. It just sounds interesting. But I'm not sure if they are too good to be true. I also know that healthy eating (Which I've started doing lately) and exercise most likely helps too. And probably going to bed at a regular time.

But these drinks really are interesting. I am not sure if they are good for you or not or if doctors even prescribe them. But I do like the taste. It's just the cost that's the problem.

Anyways. If anyone has any experience with these drinks (good or bad) feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

My Grandmother was told to use them by her Doc and whenever she was in hospital she was given them with her meals (she had a problem with low appetite) so--I guess they were recommended.

I really think that keeping your diet diverse in fruits and veggie (green leafy ones) is probably a better idea if you can though.

I read about that in an article actually. How these were used in hospitals for patients who refused to eat or did not have an apetitie. I don't think that means it replaces a meal though.

Well not only that but I also need protein. Even though I've been eating a lot healthier lately. I don't think it would be a bad idea if I learned a bit about nutrition. It's just I have to eat every 2-3 hours generally. I know these drinks aren't a substitute for other foods or vitamins or minerals. But I think if I can figure out the right time when to drink them they might be very useful. Of course I really do need to go to the doctor too and find out what's going on with my bones.

I have a feeling though that anything healthy and nutritious like cereal, fruits, vegetables, protein, milk, and even these ensure drinks they might help a little. But for a definite answer and more thorough plan. The doctor would probably be the best thing.

Well thanks Alley. I think I should probably try these drinks after I got the actual needed hours for sleep and breakfast too.

If you stay up really late, don't eat breakfast and are feeling worse than normal. Than not even a good meal is going to completely revive you and bring you to the normal state that the body should be in.

I think at least..

Ensure is intended to be a nutrition supplement for people who have trouble eating enough calories to maintain their body's needs. They're recommended for people who have trouble with chewing or swallowing food, have conditions such as cancer or people who have had unexpected weight loss.

They are not intended to be a nutritional replacement. They do not contain adequate amount of nutrients or fiber to maintain your body's needs. Consuming them in large amounts can cause GI upset and diarrhea because they are very concentrated.

If you are looking to use them as a nutritional supplement there are better options. The best source of calcium is always dairy products such as milk. Some brands of orange juice also have calcium added for those who cannot tolerate milk.

Really.

Well I don't not mind drinking them. Especially since they are so expensive. But I'm glad you explained that to me. So milk huh. That's what I really need to be drinking.

We do actually have milk cartons in the vending machine at school. For a while I got those when we had break at school. But now I've been going back to the sodas. I should definitely go back to the milk carton. Hell lot cheaper too.

I guess I need to make sure that even if I try something that's nutritious. If too much of it isn't good or if the purpose of it doesn't met my purpose than it's just a waste.

I feel kinda stupid for getting a 6 pack of these though. But now I know that they aren't for my needs. However now I see why they would have been good for my sister. Since she couldn't really eat food at all and get the protein and vitamins she needed. The fact that she was unable to eat because of surgery these would have been perfect for her. Who knows maybe they do make some kind of supplements for people with weak bones.

But for now I'll stick to milk. And I guess. Live and learn.

or yoghurt or soy or cheese or almonds or beans or broccoli.

(soy and dairy products have the most though)

ensure doesn't contain any milk, even though it look milky in appearance. It's mostly water, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup (check the website under "ingredients".

Alot of HIV+ people drink it when their digestion changes to get minimum calories.

The pains in your bones, neck and shoulders would not be related to a calcium deficiency, which is pretty rare in males anyways (unless your are over 65 years old). You may have a form of arthritis.

Oh. So maybe it isn't as good for you as a thought. I guess milk would probably be better. And cheaper.

I'm only 19. Arthritis. I am not sure if you can get it this early. Regardless. Suppose I need to stop delaying the doctor and find out what it is. I do know that Alleve does help though. I've taken that before when it really hurts and it relaxes me alot and the pain isn't as bad. But the point is I really need to try and see what's going on. I'll try to go next week. Well first I have to make an appointment.
