Especially considering how obscured is is in comparison with France's beautiful song "Je n'ai que mon ame" (4th place) and the very popular Greek one "(I Would) Die For You" (3rd place).

Seriously, who - other than Abba, obviously - has has a lasting, sucessful musical career as a direct result of Eurovision?

Celine Dion won it in the late 80's, but her career didn't take off until Beauty and the Beast in 1991, and hardly anyone remembered her win until the "Before they were Famous" shows dug up the archive footage. Bucks Fizz lasted a year or so, but not a great while. Everyone else has either completely vanished into obscurity, or were already famous before their win.

The number of lasting, successful careers isn't all that big to begin with, so there's no reason for Eurovision to spawn more than its share (there are less than 1,000 songs), especially since the mixed demographic of voters makes for bland preferences.

I never heard of it before, but one of the podcasts I listen to is Andy and Bob's Blog World: http://andy-bob.blogspot.com/

Normally, Bob does the podcasting but since Eurovision started Andy has taken over because he is a dedicated fanatic and hosts Eurovision parties every year.

As this is not my kind of music, I don't get much out of the three examples they broadcast each week, but I do like the enthusiasm the boys (particularly Andy) have about the whole process.

Another fan of the contest here. Ever since hearing the exotic Turkish entry of 1980 (I think !!) Petr'oil by Ajda Pekkan, an ironic song about the love of petrol during the petrol crisis at the time. Here in Britain the music scene was being ravaged by punk and I couldn't believe finding another world of different music styles. Consequently those contests of the 80s were my faves. :D

Anyway onto this year and I've had a chance to see the videos of the entries and I am drawn to the entries of Iceland and Moldavia. The Icelandic song though seems to have the first obscenity ever to have been sung in the contest, and has to get out of the semi-final. The Moldavian song, titled 'Loca' is just such a simple hook that it's so easily embedded in your head. And as for the guy singing it, Arsenium, I think is his name - what a cutie !! He could give me his 'boca' and show me his 'chokka' anytime !! *|*

Also reckon that the German and British entries could be dark horses, the UK song though will be much dependent on how well the girl's chorus can be reproduced live. :-)

I can't understand why the Greek or Swedish entries appear to be strongly fancied, other than both entries are sung by very established and competent women who won't fail to deliver their song perfectly, but IMHO neither song has a strong enough melody to carry off the title.

But then again there were some dirges that took the contest between that great win of Dana International and the first win by Turkey.

Anyway, best of luck to all the countries competing, and I would say that if nothing else, at least the contest pulls Europe together, but then again - Serbia & Montenegro !!! How sad ! :( :(

wow i have to admit, the belgian entry going to athens is very catchy and should do well this year. im glad the first one didnt make it - it was too weird and not very eurovision-esque.

I am born in bosnia and now i live in serbia(eastern europe),and for us,songs from Eurosong are good because we understand them and you dont,that's the problem.Most of people here dont understand TRL on MTV,or California Rock songs,for them that kind of songs are not for dancing and clubing.We love melodic songs,catchy songs or songs with etno-techno sound.This year winners are SEVERINA or Las Ketchup.Serbia had good song Summer dance by FLAMINGOSI but because of political reasons they didnt send it to contest.Sorry for mistakes I dont speak englih very well.

wat???? las ketchup are actually gonna do eurovision???? lol i thought the guy who posted that b4 was just joking! wow, that is gonna be very entertaining indeed (!) ! their song "asereje" was just incredibly funny n i used to do the feeble dance lol. well that's made my day!

Saw the first nine songs on Tuesday. They were so fucking bad, that if they're any indication of this year's level, I think we're gonna see a new low this year.

Belgium might do well, although I hate it. Most sympathetic towards Albania so far (no, not because of the performer).
 
Which song should I put money on?

I'd really like to see the UK win as it's the only one I'm sympathetic towards, but everyone else seems to hate it.

Sweden and Greece sound more like winners.
