Mid 70s to mid 80s is when the term really really took hold- certainly in the medical and academic world, along with transgender people themselves taking it on. Christine Jorgensen was publicly using it from the mid 70s onwards in all public engagements and the supportive press even took to it around then.

Is that true for all those you mention?

I have never seen anyone describe it as having anything to do with their sexuality/sex.

They would be a mess. There doesn't seem to be anything preposterous in the transgender concept, what is unsettling is, first the people who believe a woman is a vagina and a penis is a man, and second, the shrinks who must scientifically determine who is transgender and who is not one.
