BR and HDdvd are equal in price. I already have a BR-Player, so I am not going to invest another grand for a combo-player for only *one* movie I'd like to have being released on HDdvd.

that is not an equal in price [-X

I wasn't talking about the players, but the discs. Over here they are equal in price.

And for the record, the Toshiba HD-A1 isn't capable of 1080p (but most BR-Players are) And Toshiba wants to get rid of those models to make room for a new one, that's why it is so cheap.

Still way under the price range of Blueray Players and even if the discs were equal in price it wouldn't do any good with outh the players.#-o

Seriously I'm not saying bueray sucks or that hddvd is better just that the price isn't worth it. If they were truly equal in price trust me I would have Blueray.

You don't have to buy an extra large screen to fully enjoy HD. Neither do you have to buy the most expensive one. Almost every brand has their entry class models, affordable for almost everyone (ranging between $ 400 - 600).

All that matters is the use of the right equipment, the right cabling and the viewing distance. Sitting too close to a large screen is not ideal. The optimal distance to a 50" screen would be at least 16-18 feet.

Fine. It would be nice if you could save your replies exclusively for threads of political or social issues as well.

And btw, I wasn't one of those who starved themselves for Sanjaya.

Nope I think I'll reply wherever I damn well please including when I think things are ridiculous to the point of being humorous. But don't worry the one man protest that paramount doesn't even realize is happening will def cut into their profits big time.

I need my eyes checked, because I thought the topic was about Paramore, the band. I was getting ready to get my sword and dagger prepared, thinking they made some kind of homophobic comment or something ^_^;.

As for the Transformers not being on Blu-Ray, I have no use for Blu-Ray, so it's no skin of my nose.

Sony's BDP-S300 regular price is only 499,- here PLUS a 2-year pick up warranty and a total of five BR discs for free. And the price is expected to drop to 399,- by September. Oh btw, I am not talking about online shops. Especially Toshiba, Samsung and Sony are VERY picky about where you bought your players etc...

And the price IS woth it.

It's not my one man protest that will cut into their profits, but their making a wrong decision.

Well it is hard to argue with a neon frog... they're often poisonous you know.

And the point that 'everyone boycott Paramount' is that what? Bluray is homophobic? I'll stick to my DVD, thank you.

For the average viewer, neither HD nor Blu-Ray is worth the extra price over standard DVDs. Most people, myself included, don't give a shit if the picture is slightly clearer. Unless it's capable of beaming the movie directly into my brain so I can watch it as if I'm fucking inside the scenes, the "upgrade" is no where near worth the extra price.

Well, if this is the hill you want to die on...

How's your SACD player doing?

who cares what format

everything will be streaming in the next couple of years.

Frankly.. both will fail if a solution isn't made by 2008.

HD DVD has all the tools to be successful. With their combo disc(DVD and HD DVD), they are able to slowly put HD copies in J6P hands, because they would already have the HD copy. All they have to do is flip the disc over when they get their cheap HD DVD player.

The problem is that their combo discs are very expensive, and haven't reach DVD price level yet. One suggestion that I do have for the HD DVD group, is to release all the new movies in combo disc ONLY(I see this happening soon). That means no SD DVD or HD DVD version sold separately. Hell, I would even keep the DVD packaging, and just list the HD version as a special feature for HD DVD players ONLY.

When combo prices start to fall.. I can see the HD DVD adopting something similar to what I stated above. I mean why even go through the R&D for a combo disc and not use it? I think that's what Paramount discovered, and that's why they are in the HD DVD corner.

:grrr:

What are they thinking?

*sells Star Trek DVD collection on ebay*

Oh my god! NO! My boyfriend loves Star Trek, he's dying to get Star Trek The Next Generation The Entire Collection on DVD.

Also I'm not a big fan of Blu-Ray because I don't have the TV nor the player to play such a thing. I think in the future they will double dip once they know how popular it is.

Another reason why they went HD DVD..

"Foremost is compatibility. All new movie titles from Universal and soon Warner will be combination (or twin-format) discs - HD DVD on one side and standard DVD on the other. This means that HD DVD discs will also play on older DVD players, which is crucial for portability. Collins noted that Blu-ray owners will end up buying two discs to watch the movie on their laptop or in the car on a road trip"

That means instead of the combo disc(the flipper).. the HD/SD version will all be released on ONE disc for HD DVD(Twin Format).. and will be able to play on all DVD players.

So instead of this..

Transformers
DVD - 6,000,000
blu ray- 250,000
HD DVD - 150,000

It will be...
blu ray - 250,000
HD DVD(combo or TWIN format) - 6,150,000

Hmm I dont think anyone really cares about the 'format war'. At least not the average consumer.

I dont care for HD anything as of yet, so im fine with regular DVDs. Heck, I dont even buy regular DVDs. I just rent. I have a regular TV and until HD picks up as an affordable standard then thats how I'll remain. I dont think the price all these hi def things are asking for is worth it at all. Yes Ive seen HD in action. I'll leave it to the early adopters and rich people to make it affordable for me in the future.

But even so I have already promised myself somethin important. I will NOT support Sony or any of their products even again.

Really, boycotts should be reserved for companies that abuse human rights or outrageously abuse the environment, not for silly consumer wars.

Thanks for the information. Although, if I was going to buy one of those $400-$600 entry class models for the 20' feet of viewing distance I have, then I wouldn't bother going with an HDTV at all, unless of course those models are 50'' and over.

By the way, I bought an HDDVD(1080p) player for $180 and it also came with 5 free movies.

This whole argument really makes me chuckle. By the time they finish arguing someone will launch a player that will play either format. It will be like Coke v Pepsi. To paraphrase Rich Hall, both companies spend a billion dollars a year each on marketing, you ask for a Coke and they say they only have Pepsi, you respond, "whatever".

As for shiny new HD , is the difference in picture quality really that important? I have a 20 year old crt TV (admittedly it's a Bang & Olufsen) which has a superb picture. While the picture quality on the new high end (and hellishly expensive) HD tv sets is very good, it is still only a bit better than my old set. Its like Spinal Tap are making televisions which 'go up to 11'.

*cough* *cough* *Whispers to Levenshulme31* "Psssst.......they already have! They have DVD players out now that play both formats. The only downside is that they go for around $600 to $1200 bucks!"
