Cardio is what will burn the fat, but weight training to increase lean muscle mass can help increase basal metabolism as well.

I agree with cardio (jogging, treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical machine, swimming laps, etc.) for at least 30 minutes. Eat small meals every 3 hours or so, with protein and complex carbs or vegetables. Going hungry will make your metabolism slow down and your body will hold onto fat stores.

Losing weight is simply a matter of calories: You need to have negative calories to lose weight. 3500 calories = 1 pound. Cardio is the quickest way to burn calories (it's virtually instant right?), but building muscle is the more sustainable way. You'll increase your metabolism since muscle requires more energy to function, and become a calorie-burning machine! I'd say combine cardio with some weight lifting to get rid of the initial weight, then move more towards weight lifting as you near your goal.

Good luck!

ok, that's 30 min of cardio every day? how many calories would I burn with 30 minutes of running a day? What about 1 hour?

Weight Lifting:
I don't have any weights, and don't think I would have time ot drive to a gym. What's a good cheap way to weight lift in this case (talking < $100 bucks).

Well Hax, you arent going to like this mate but that soda has got to go... Its only water with copious amounts of sugar (used to work at a soft drink factory after school... it would blow your mind to know how much sugar is in there)... and it by itself is undoing a lot of good work...

To give you a basic idea.... a 250ml glass of soda has about 100-120 calories... to burn that off alone you need to walk between 15-20 minutes! Just drink water - at least 2 liters a day to flush out your system and the waste that your body will create while you lose weight... its a critical component.

Anyway the thing with cardio is that you have to raise your heart rate... at your age to probably around 150 - 160 bpm... then hold it there. The first 20 minutes of cardio can almost be considered a warm up and the last 10 are the ones that kick ass so you got to hang in there.

Weights will give your metabolism a lift and that will continually help you burn fat so the 2 together are really the key...

As to what exercises... well if you have no weights there are 3 that will hit just about every muscle in your body and the biggest ones too... chin ups, push ups and squats. None need weights and if you find squats easy try them will hanging onto some books or a water bottle or brick - something heavy...

I posted this link on another thread as well... but I'll do it again because it is packed with info - routines, exercises - the whole lot... have a poke around there and I'm sure you'll find what you need.

Good luck mate!!!!!!

You can find a pair of inexpensive dumbbells at any sporting goods store. I bought a pair at Sears.

You might also check Craigslist or you local paper's classifieds. Someone gave me a bunch of free weights, for free. A lot of people buy exercise equipment and never use it or upgrade.

You cant count the walking you already do mate... thats the bloody hard part!!!

See, if you want to lose weight you have to do more... you were doing that already when the weight was going on so you have to take that off the list... sorry buddy!!!!

Everything that you do over and above the everyday stuff is the gold... and thats what you've got to aim for! Everything else looks good though!!

Good luck mate!

I'm not sure, as I'm not really a calorie counter. As was mentioned, the first 20 minutes you're burning off glucose stored in your muscles, and then you start going into your fat stores. So, the longer you go after 20 minutes the better. But you don't want to get too intense too fast and burn yourself out.

Guys,

OK... let me remind you where you are... you are in a safe zone... a zone for advice, support and help.

This is not the place for throw aways, off topic or off color remarks. This is a serious topic and it deserves respect. Eating disorders are no joking matter either and people who are afflicted need help, respect and support no matter who you are.

Please remember that in this part of JUB respect for yourselves, each other and the site is the order of the day and nothing less is acceptable.

Thanks.

ypu should just stick w/ water, gatorade and other flavored drinks arent worth the calories or sodium content, water is always the way too go. and if i were you id do 3 days of 30 min cardio, and two days of weight training:)

Hey there, I have been leaning up for a modeling job, and doing so while miantianing muscle mass. So this has been working for me.
I recommend consuming 1=2gram of pro per pound of bodyweight since your goals is 165ibs 165=180 grams of protean should be fine. (4 cal of protein =1gram).
And thats lean no fat protein= egg whites, whey pro supplement. Fish, white chicken. No fried food.

depending on how fast you want to loose. Is how much you want to restrict your carbs; Take caution if your diabetic that you dont drop you blood suger too low. I did while working out and im not even diabetic.

I do good with only 35=40 grams of complex carbs a day. try to consume them in the morning and lunch. do not consume carbs before bed, as your body tends to store it as fat while your sleeping.

and by carbs i mean : complex carbs
green veggie's, outmeal, yams. brown rice. whole grian bread.
I love oatmeal because its high in fiber.
and you need atleast 15 grams of fiber a day. This will help you loos wight to.

I combine body building with cardio.
and started doing 3x a wk at 25 min
then increasing 5 min each wk.

Make sure you drink 1=2 gallon of water a day, especilly with the increased protein, or it may be hard on your kidneys.

also, you can get Dandelion root capsules at GNC, it helps shed water wight and is a natural diuretic.

I hope this was helpfull.
take care

You can actually get rid of the weight without spending a dime for weights etc ....
I use to be 350 lbs. .... and it was killing me ....
I began power walking a quarter mile, then a half mile, and finally a mile every day ....
Then; I totally QUIT soda of any kind !
I began doing my own exercises at home , like bending over and touching the floor with the tips of my hands ten times until I could actually put my palms on the floor each time I bent over and did it 25 times each morning.
And .. I would stand in a stationary position with my arms out and twist in place from right to left and then left to right 100 times ...
In ninety days ; I went from the 350lbs to 190 and was not looking too bad ..
I became ill and was not able to properly exercise etc for two years and now the weight is back to 231 lbs. now; BUT I'm back to exercising etc and it is coming off slowly ...
Good Luck on your weight shedding journey ...

Lots of great advice has been given above, but I just wanted to point out one thing nobody else has mentioned.

The key to getting in shape is finding a schedule you can stick to. Don't overcommit yourself from the first day by convincing yourself you'll go to the gym for an hour 4 times a week and run for an hour on the three other days. You'll burn out or feel like you don't enough time to do everything in your life. Commit to something simple at first (like running for 30 minutes on M, W and F) then scale up as you're able to. Sticking to specific days and activities is good too, as opposed to just saying you'll go workout 3 times a week.

Most importantly, when (not if) you fall off the wagon and miss a workout, get back on schedule right away but don't feel bad about it. It happens to everybody.

well put, drh
thas something i see alot of in the gym
guys work out super hard the fist wk of there membership
then you dont see them for wks
then its likeonce a month
good advice ease into it

Excellent point indeed. Also consider if you have one bad meal to not freak out about it.

If you eat three meals a day that ends up being 21 meals a week. if you mess up on even two meals and misbehave you still are eating healthy 90% of the time. which is absolutely FAB.

Same goes with exercise.

In fact.... plan on cheating. PLAN on it. make it a reward thing. One meal is NOT going ot undo your whole weeks effort. Perhaps you can look forward to every friday night grabbing a pizza... MMM PIZZA. be somewhat reasonable and don't eat the whole thing, but you can definitely "CHEAT"! :-) And even with that you can easily accept and forgive yourself for even ANOTHER cheat that you didn't plan on.

Totally true. My dad actually used to do follow a diet where he would eat right 6 days a week (no sweets, only square meals) and then give himself one day a week to eat whatever he wanted. He still lost weight and improved what he was eating overall because the amount of crap he was eating was lower over the course of a week.
