Xenophobia is not an incident of unemployment. Why not send women back to the kitchen? Why not demand the gays be fired? The focus on nationalist isolationism is a problem in its own right.

Xenophobia has become much more apparent over the past few years, since the beginning of the economic crisis that has been afflicting much of Europe...that it's roots are founded in fear of those with different skin pigmentation, or different religious affilitation, or different languages hardly impacts on those neanderthals who believe that their very survival depends on repatriating Johnny Foreigner.

The problem with this thought is that in most of Europe there hasn't really been any such a thing as freedom of speech.

E.g. questioning of immigration policies in the Netherlands has actually led to incarceration of a Dutch politician in the past and even the utter neglect of the Dutch judicial system in prosecuting the people who orchestrated an attempt at his life.

Part of the so-called right-wing populism is about calling out the so-called left on their neglect of administrative duty, such as not being arsed to honor laws that others had voted into being, while still demanding to have their own ideas respected.

But that is not extreme or radical right-wing populism. Extreme is blaming Jews and Gypsies for the unemployment rate.

That's exactly what this particular person's party was accused of, his wife lost a leg in the attempt at her husband's life back in 1986, she was accused of being an antisemite by the people who ran the Anne Frank house even though she had a Jewish grandmother herself.

A significant proportion of Gypsies in Europe lead an utterly antisocial lifestyle that causes all kinds of problems for other people.
The unwillingness of the established Left (not the Communists) to even talk about this problems is utterly difficult and people aren't taking it anymore.

No. We want the Jews— at least the rich ones. We have had the "asylum seeker debate" for a decade here but it's so messy because everyone agrees we want smart, educated Jews but not the illiterate gay-hating Afghanis/Iranians/Pakistanis etc etc etc.

I'm sure Germany was one of the few most developed nations of the world at that point, as I'm sure Germany is still today (only less so).

Do not belittle what happened in and because of WW2 because it changed the world faster than anything that happened since.

I support that to a great extent but I must admit my feelings are mixed. In my view the only reason Hitler's propaganda was effective was due to generalized stupidity, ignorance, and xenophobic hatefulness in the German electorate. If you can fix that, it won't matter how many raving austrian art school drop-outs you parade before them with full free speech and a megaphone, they will never vote for it.

Not really -- they were still trying to rebuild a country smashed by defeat in a war, with an economy struggling to keep from collapse under the weight of sanctions. Hitler and other Nazis played off the punitive planks imposed by the peace settlement quite skillfully, stirring and magnifying the resentment of the German people at being expected to pay for what it cost their enemies to defeat them. Even schemes to disarm "undesirables" were often ploys to get around the limitations on arms under the control of the government, by handing the confiscated weapons over to "reliable" persons who would use them as the government/party directed, and they got mileage out of stimulating anger at how Germany had been weakened.

It was more due to resentment of the imposed peace settlement and the willingness of people looking for a way up despite nations who were still plainly their enemies to believe that the Nazis actually were trying to raise Germany back to an important place in the world.

Yes. They had a war to pay for. Either the one they lost, or the one they were planning. Unfortunately they didn't want to accept they could only afford one of those.
