Extreme right wing populism is rising in Europe... What can we do to stop it?

Humm.. No.

Council of Europe : formed from the governments of EU countries, all of them democratically elected.
Parliament : democratically elected.
European commission : chosen by the council of Europe and approved by the Parliament, both democratically elected.

EU is democratic and the EU constitution has been approved whether directly by referendum or by countries' parliament.

It's a little too easy to say something is anti democratic when it just is something you disagree with.

PS : as for the raise of right wingers, it's no surprise when governments everywhere blame Bruxelles when something isn't right, instead of blaming their constant lack of courage. The thing is, Bruxelles can't answer to defend itself in national medias. EU is the perfect scapegoat who can't defend itself. So convenient... And they act surprised when people start to be suspicious of EU...

The European Commission is where the problem is. They are pretty hard to remove - either they quit or you need a 60+% vote in parliament to remove them. Also, while the parliament can vote on the law, only the commission can create it. For me this is unacceptable - we need electoral control of those creating and writing the law. So while its unfair to rule it completely undemocractic, its still lacking what we would normally demand control of. How would you feel if there were a special committee who created all the law in a job for life? Sure you can vote down their law, but you can't ever create any without them.

That is what I thought as well and it was so commonly repeated that I think a lot of people think that, but a few months back there was a big discussion with many facts and stats and studies showing that immigrants are actually helping to tilt us more progressive politically-- a big reason why the right is flipping out about immigration and the hispanic vote.

The right wing trend is due to the bending over backwards.

Europe's governments need to become ruthless in the defense of liberty. That means that immigrants taking over neighborhoods and schools to impose their own agendas must be sent to prison with the maximum penalties.

:=D:

I am in no way, shape or form a UKIP or Right-Wing supporter at all, as my many posts on here have demonstrated. However, we are but a small island, which is really "straining" at the seams with the influx of immigrants over the last ten years.
I also am not a supporter of Cameron or his cronies. It shames me to a small degree that i think this way. However sometimes charity does
begin at home. Now our education, health, and housing(social) is reaching breaking point. Many Britons are having to wait years for non-emergency surgery, for housing and trying to get your child into the "local" school is nigh on impossible.
Add to this the extremist views that are blighting our society and it all adds up to a recipe for disaster. Thankfully we do not have "free" schools as such. Unlike England, where extremist political and religious teachings are being carried out on a daily basis in the class-room.
When radicals of whichever persuasion use Human Rights Laws for all the wrong reasons, maybe it is time for The UK to rethink it's position on and in Europe.
I never thought that i would have such views, but living and working(very closely) within a small city community, i am starting to see just how people can be "turned" into that which they hate.

And apparently, if we were to believe some of the people who posted in this thread, the right wing had no place in Europe... Golden Dawn and the German neo-Nazis enter the European Parliament, the massive gains for the Front National in France and the landslide victory of Fidesz in Hungary... I am sure that Britain, the imperial power who conquered more than half the world with unimaginable violence but doesn't like immigrants, will make enormous gains, as have the Danish People's Party and the Freedom Party in Austria.

EU vote sees boost for right wing in France, Austria and Greece

French far right in ‘earthquake’ win as Europe votes

(Reuters) - Marine Le Pen's far right National Front scored a stunning first victory in European Parliament elections in France on Sunday as critics of the European Union registered a continent-wide protest vote against austerity and mass unemployment.

EU far-right expects success in elections
Eurosceptic, anti-immigrant parties hope to make big gains in vote for a new EU parliament.

Today are the EU Elections. Lot of hateful ads by extreme right wing groups in Munich/Bavaria area. Not really targeting gays, but targeting Muslims and foreigners. Today they come for them, tomorrow they come for me. Appalled by what I saw, granted it is a fringe group.

You know the old, cheap school teaching that revolts start with the revolt of the privileged

Not going to lie, it worries me that Europe is vearing to the right and away from the dream of the European Union. They've often been a model for tolerance. What happens when they go bad?

They did not manage it in Germany, but they did everywhere else pretty much! France elected the National Front, Austria The Freedom Party, UK voted UKIP. It is a sad day for Europe, the only ones who can feel at least a bit OK today are the most of the Greeks (Golden Dawn were at least beaten by syriza), Spain (where I think the moderate left appears to have one), Germany (I hate Merkel and her lot but at least she is not as rapid right wing as the other options in Europe) and the Dutch (Wilders got smashed at last!). Not sure entirely on the rest of Europe as everyone is worrying about the rise of UKIP here.

Saying all this the turnout has been awful everywhere (the UK was 33.74%) and it seems about that in most places. The European elections are typically protest votes because no one cares that much about the European Parliament (in comparison to their national assemblies), so lets hope when national elections come around people turn away from the scum.

I take exception to "scum". In my view, UKIP is neither right wing nor racist. They just happen to believe that the UK would be better off outside the EU and that immigration should be curtailed because the country is essentially full. I voted for them and am very pleased with the overall results.

What I remember some UKIP big-wig saying about Russia and Putin totally repulsed me, without even knowing what their views on gays are. Surely, if all Britian wants is out of the European Union you can find a better lot than that white trash.

Fuck it, they keep saying homophobic and transphobic stuff so I won't trust them and will call em scum

Not right wing??? They want to privatise the nhs, the prisons, flat taxes and Farage idolising thatcher! They are right of the Tories on most economic things and never talk out about the EU trade deals with the states, which will really fuck up all workers rights and ability to publically own anything.
If you want out of the EU, that's fine so do (well i want it massively reformed) The greens are the only non right wing option in the UK

They sound like the GOP. In Europe, that would make them so far to the right they're out of the stadium.

Oh completely, the new right in Europe has taken the lead from America. Before the right use to be little Islanders and just sort of old fashioned and wanting to stay in a fairly safe bucolic image of Britain (or whatever country they may be from), now they feel even more dangerous than Thatcher's lot...

Nonsense. They have taken the lead from the gypsies. They know gypsies are the most active of thieves and throwing down the borders to Bulgarians, Romanians etc will mean thousands more thieves and dole recipients sucking up British welfare.

Oh please! Am I right in thinking that you recently celebrated your 24th birthday? That would mean you were born in the year Mrs Thatcher left office.

Miliband and Labour failed because they ignored the electorate's complaints about uncontrolled immigration. Miliband stabbed his own brother in the back and he's now taking advice from Blair who's joined the medieval cult called Catholicism.:##:
