  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Extreme right wing populism is rising in Europe... What can we do to stop it?

Miliband also failed because he's the Oxford educated millionaire son of a Marxist immigrant who looks and sounds weird and is perceived to be out of touch with the everyday concerns of the people he purports to represent.

I do however welcome a referendum on Europe now though.

Oh good. Bring it on then. :jab:

You know full well that both Miliband and Clegg (and/or their successors) and most of their MP's will block the legislation allowing a referendum to take place. It will be voted down in the Commons. I suspect Cameron would be secretly pleased and relieved to be honest.

I'd be AMAZED if this country EVER gets a referendum. I sincerely HOPE we do.

And yes - I voted UKIP. I'm very glad they came first.

... If the EU was a bad thing, there wouldn't be other countries wanting in for a start.

I have assumed that poor countries like Ireland and those Yugoslav ones want to welch on the clever, hardworking Germans and English.

How many people know anything substantial of the benefits? For far too long we have heard about stupid EU rules which turn out to be overblown and exaggerated scaremongering by the right wing press. Once a debate is underway, we will be told the benefits, just like we were before we originally joined. If the EU was a bad thing, there wouldn't be other countries wanting in for a start.

There are no benefits. The UK would never export much beef to the USA; they have enough of their own. London is a world financial centre despite the EU, not because of it.

The countries which want to join the EU are eastern European and Turkey which isn't even in Europe at all. They all want to join for the handouts. It will just mean more people for the British taxpayer to subsidise. Norway and Switzerland are both doing very nicely thank you outside the EU and there's no suggestion that they wish to join.

sprinkle a little magical gay dust on them. we did that to kanye west and he turned into frank ocean.

...The UK is a small country, with a very dense population...

It is getting denser with every truck coming through Calais

...an almost non-existent manufacturing industry (thanks maggie)...

The workers of China 'stole' the manufacturing industries of Britain, USA and Australia because they're willing to work on slaves' wages.

They have to comply with a lot of EU rules, and yet they have no say in them. I'd not enjoy that position myself.

To say that EU membership offers no advantage is intellectually dishonest.

The situation is such that if we lost our financial sector to somewhere else in the EU, we'd have what left?

Dignity, pride, self-reliance? The UK is not a small or insignificant country.

Let's tear down this morose anti-democratic monstrum and build something more sensible from the ruins.
(I mean the EU, not the UK, of course).

While the absolute rejection that anything good comes from the EU is simplistic those that hold up the virtues of a huge bureaucratic "union" are either selling or buying a bill of goods. Top down bureaucrats removed from the concerns of local populations and economies don't give off the air of confidence. There are a number of different regions with different concerns, needs and cultures. One size fits all does not work in that massive a scale... the thought that one cannot even harbor skepticism over the practicality of the EU defies belief. Sorry for this Yank speaking up but I hear more than enough about America's problems from our international Jubbers.

I agree with you here.

...The UK set itself up as a gateway to America....

I haven't heard about that.

Poor people come to Britain and my country because we are Welfare States which pay people to stay at home and do nothing. I understand the USA has low minimum pay rates and their welfare is much less friendly to the poor and lazy non-citizens.
