Attention Facebook: Have you ever been in Facebook jail?

Well. The last ditch efforts between FB and advertisers failed...so more than 400 companies have withdrawn advertising on FB.

Whether they will give in and come back after July...or whether FB will get really serious about their approach to stop enabling hate speech remains to be seen.

U.S. civil rights groups have enlisted the multinationals to help pressure the social media giant into taking concrete steps to block hate speech in the wake of the death of George Floyd and amid a national reckoning over racism.

It is a delight to see Zuck and Co. get a ban for 30 days, although I have real fears that they will punish everyone by expanding their 'hate speech' algorithms and all discussion will be summarily truncated and censored.

FB is so XXth century... but it still has some trail left to run. FB is a bit like... say... automats were to "the future"... or Atari to gaming: more a forerunner or a in-between phase that a real cornerstone of "the future".

That's the destiny of big dinosaurs: they end up being remembered more by their age than by the bulk and power they used to sway and wield.

Actually, the funniest thing of all this is that the advertising industry is a dinosaur itself

I must say I cannot remember the last time I saw a serious enterprise advertising on FB. It's always small local businesses with a low budget for ads, or shady things.

But something is definitely changing.

^ I only visit the FB pages of a couple of businesses and one about a urban redevelopment project, so that my experience with FB is precisely the only daily one without advertising...

I found these pages last week on FB that let you heavily edit what ads you receive. Most of mine were based on what I clicked in the past so I have learned -

NEVER click on a political article or "like" one
NEVER click on anything of interest unless you want to be bombarded with ads

I have whittled my "OK" list down to animals and nature and architecture BUT now I can only see maybe five or six new posts from other people and my feed stops. I am not sure if that is my "punishment" for stopping the ads or not but don't really care enough to find out.

Another thing - when they ask you about movies or TV shows or music/artists that you like it isn't just an "interest" - it means you want to hear from them.

I had to block almost all of them except I kept Alicia Keys because she is the most interesting one to read and I like her vibe and what she has to say. It isn't that I dislike the other ones but I am cool not hearing from them..|

So this happened. FB is riddled with Trump supporters....and the crackdown on 'hate speech' by Zuckerberg is likely going to be a knife that cuts both ways.

^ That's horrible, but I guess all we can do is what you are doing now: complain about every FB ban... on all other media. Tweet about it. Post vids on YouTube about it. Share it here, there and everywhere.

I feel like I am going to go to twitter jail soon because I can’t help myself with some of the dumb shit I read on there.

^ AS long as you don't hurt yourself... I mean apart from reading all that.

I see that Zuck and Sandberg are supposed to be having a vid conference with the group that spearheaded the boycott.

Make them fucking buckle.

I am going to put my privacy on FB to "Only me" on Jun 30 and keep it like that until Aug 1.

I did that and I think that in future I will always keep everything to "only me" (or only me and my guy) and once a month, open (some of) the posts of the previous month to friends for a few days.

^ So that was my plan. Since July 1 I've been posting with my privacy settings on "only me", though I did occasionally reply to posts by others, as well as groups. Et voilà, I'm banned again! This time I do not even know why. This afternoon I went on FB and read that I was banned from posting for 24 hours, but within an hour or so it had become 30 days. And what for? No idea. They won't show me the post, or reply, or whatever, that got me banned in the first place.

When I am allowed on FB again, I will only use them as a photo album. I am never going to compliment anyone on their photos or even like anyone else's posts. It's over. Fed up with that moody time sink.

It would be interesting to know what is actually triggering the ban...there are several people reporting back after receiving extended bans for no substantive reasons.

As you note, FB is an increasingly moody time sink. And increasingly, it appears that the net catching 'hate' speak is becoming finer and finer...although it seems to be criticism of right wingers, racists and homophobes that is affecting the people in my feed. Maybe it is the same for people who spew invective against the liberals and leftists...I don't know if they are also being targeted.

And having 3 more huge corporations including McDonalds stop advertising isn't going to help. In an effort to get FB to clean up its act, I suspect that it will become more and more difficult to express any opinions that might offend someone's sensibilities.

^ They seem to have moved beyond the "extended bans for no substantive reasons" and gone full-blast arbitrariness if they no longer even want to show me exactly which post is against their rules.

Since I hadn't posted anything publicly since June, perhaps it was a comment to someone else's post, or maybe an older post of mine, who knows. I am beyond caring. In future, I will use FB exclusively as a back-up photo album in the cloud, and refrain from commenting or even liking anyone else's posts.

This is so typical. They don't get sarcasm, irony, or any other kind of humour. FB has the linguistic abilities of a five-year-old. One reason why I only want to use it as a virtual private photo and video library henceforth is because I am becoming ashamed of having my first and last name attached to something so low-brow and reactionary as Facebook has become.

If I recall correctly, it started as a forum for elite students at the best American universities. I wonder what those liberal geniuses would have thought if they had seen the future.

So I have a 7 day jail sentence for using coon....as a short form for RACOON.

And typically, you can disagree, but it doesn't lift the suspension.

And when you fill out the report why you disagree, Facebook makes it impossible to send it it anywhere.

Jesus wept.
