I try to live my life without prejudice and without judging people. So when I find that something confuses or disgusts me, I try to understand it. It's an opportunity to learn and remove some bias and ignorance from my perspective.

That leads me to the obsession with Justin Beiber, One Direction and boy bands, boy artists of similar age.

I am not a fan of Gaga or Beyonce or Madonna but I understand why some gay men might obsess over them. Not for me, but I get it. However, I just don't understand the obsession with these borderline prepubescent boys... and I need someone to explain it to me. Because there are some guys (mostly here on JUB or online though) that express some desires and thoughts that make me think "pedophilia" and I just don't want to think that way about someone who is probably just a normal person.

So could someone enlighten me? I'm not looking for any insults or condemnation. I just truly want to understand and since there seem to be a lot of JUBbers who love these guys, I thought this is the best place to ask.

I would imagine that it's some obsession with youth, and being young and vital. Adventurous, invulnerable, wild, a little reckless.

Re: Fascination of Grown Gay Men with Boy Bands/Justin Beiber

I can't help you directly...but if you want to know why I obsess over Stevie Wonder or Tony Bennett...one word...Talent. Maybe it is similar for the guys who like these teen guys? I don't even know if these guys you mention are talented....I never liked teen idol types even when I was a teen and as a grown man...not a chance.

19 is a man and the age of consent in most countries is years younger than that even

Who are you talking about exactly?
And I doubt age of consent comes into play with these fantasies. Unless this is personal experience?
Maybe you could give more details.

The appeal is mainly their looks. They're teen heartthrobs mainly marketed to preteens.

Just saving my seat

Well...if it is looks...that explains why they are not even on my radar. On a scale of 1-10 I have a minus 3 interest in their looks.

Re: Fascination of Grown Gay Men with Boy Bands/Justin Beiber

They're young, they're rich, they're famous, they travel the world, they dance, they have millions of people watching them, they have millions of people vying for their affection. None of those are appealing to me, but I can see how they'd be appealing to others.

Bieber was marketed toward preteens when he was younger, but his target audience has clearly matured today. Nonetheless, him & many other boy band members are emblems of twinks. The gay arena has always obsessed with twinks, so why is this surprising? Some small, boyish looking dudes in their 20s are going to attract females younger than themselves while others none at all. But all will attract gay guys of all ages.

A better topic would be why gay men are attracted to guys with looks & bodies of a teenager...

Re: Fascination of Grown Gay Men with Boy Bands/Justin Beiber

Do you understand why there is a fascination with twinks? If you do, then there's your answer. They're basically the same, plus the boy bands/Justin Bieber also have fame. You understand why there is attraction to fame, right?

The guys you mentioned in your OP.

Well you come out here swinging rather judgmentally against a particular age group and guys who like a particular age group which is neither illegal nor immoral.

You also have to remember that a lot of guys here are also teenagers themselves ..|

This doesn't sound like you're trying to understand. It sounds like you're trying to vilify.

I blame the television and film industry for consistently casting 28 year olds to play teenagers. It seems to have warped people's perceptions of what 18-19 year olds really look like. Justin Bieber doesn't look prepubescent, he just looks like a regular 19 year old. The same goes for the members of One Direction. My youngest brother and all of his friends are within that age range; it's just what young adults look like.

Crying 'pedophilia!' on people who are attracted to these young adults is just as unfounded and reactionary as a parent calling the cops on the single dad who's watching his kids play at the park. It's just a visceral paranoia.

I'm glad that you're able to recognise your biases, but what sort of explanations were you hoping to see when you created this thread? It really doesn't seem like there's anything anybody can say to convince you that there's nothing abhorrent or immoral about finding these men attractive. Other than people agreeing with you, what do you want to hear?

Re: Fascination of Grown Gay Men with Boy Bands/Justin Beiber

Of course there are more than just one or two reasons/possibilities.

But, when you think about it, you must realize that many gay guys have been robbed of, or, cheated out of, the chance at having a normal (out of hiding) childhood, and what should have been the happy teen years that most straight kids are [almost] granted - the guys (kids) who were shoved deepest into the closet lost/missed out the most. They had to do their growing up as someone else.

I'd imagine a good many grown gay men might enjoy these shows/stars you're talking about, perhaps in vicarious/by proxy kind of ways that have little to do with any sexual desires - just being happy for, and watching, a kid who gets to be loved and can enjoy himself.

Re: Fascination of Grown Gay Men with Boy Bands/Justin Beiber

Though Beiber and OD may have a couple of decent songs, I am not a fan of them, their music or their looks.

As far as boy bands go though, the only one I can really tolerate is The Wanted. Not sure why these dudes never get as much love or recognition here or anywhere anymore or if they can even be considered the typical boy band.

These guys are in the same age range, early to mid-twenties and they look their age, they don't look like prepubescent children.

Beauty is a very important quality engrained into humans. That said, young is seen by the general public as beautiful. We aspire to keep a younger look. Sexuality is limited by numbers, contrary to what laws seem to state. I have never understood how someone can call sexual attraction towards someone who is sexually matured, pedophilia. It just doesn't make sense. If you look around the animal kingdom, I can't think of one example where another species takes age into consideration over sexual maturity.

These bands/Justin Beiber are popular and rich because of their looks, not for their overwhelming talent. They would be nowhere if they had the looks of the average Joe.

Are you starting to see the logic? Maybe you prefer a more mature, older person, sexually speaking, but you can't assume that it's the norm. Now, I'm not a huge Beiber follower, and I think One Direction has little musical talent, but I do find them sexually appealing.

I hope I made some sort of sense, I literally just woke and am feeling a little confused today. Brain no work.

Re: Fascination of Grown Gay Men with Boy Bands/Justin Beiber

I suppose it could be construed as borderline inappropriate in nature, now that you mention it.
Of course detecting predator activity is far from an exact science, but I sense red flags popping up there.
It doesn't quite fit the category of "weird behavior" per se, and certainly doesn't indicate a fascination for or obsession with kiddie-porn (for lack of a candy coated euphemism), but still it seems a bit pervy to me (being a single dad---always vigil and overprotective), especially if these gentlemen are showing up to children's concerts to throw their undershorts on stage or cruise the unsuspecting teens and preadolescence fans surrounding them in a virtual sea of jail-bait.
At the very least it smacks of bad taste to me.

sorry, I don't mean to preach, I didn't plan on giving a sermon

idk, does Justin Beiber fans generate a quasi-violent "mosh pit" where kids crash into each others chests or body surf while young ladies sit high on shoulders lifting their shirts to expose their private parts? like at a Slipknot concert? idk :##:

But seriously, I can't imagine how I'd react if I caught an adult flirting with one of my kids___I'd rip his nose hairs out of his ass for starters

Re: Fascination of Grown Gay Men with Boy Bands/Justin Beiber

Definitely making more sense now. I apologize if I came off judgemental to some.
