This isn't exactly true. Research shows that the chances of deformities in occasional cases of incest aren't significantly higher than average births. Only when it becomes widespread does it pose a significant risk to health. Historically, it seems unlikely that birth defects played a great role in making incest almost universally proscribed. Many animals naturally mate outside of family groups and its probable that human concepts of incest stem from an innate aversion to it. As societies developed, incest became a genuine taboo with various ideas around it.

Today the majority of people still find incest inherently wrong (for which, in many cases the Christian Church is responsible). That view's ok, because the vast majority of people would never actually commit it anyway (even if they fantasise about it). But it seems to me there is actually no feasible moral objection to consensual, majority-age incest.

An interesting example of culturally enforced father-son incest is the Etoro of (I think) Papua New Guinea. From about the age of 10 until late-teens the boy is expected to suck and swallow his dad's semen - almost daily in some cases - because it is believed to imbue him with masculinity. Sex with women among the Etoro is actually seen as emasculating, so it's kept to a minimum. (Sounds perfect!):D :sex:

Lancsdan, are you serious? Where did you read New Guinea boys are traditionally encouraged to suck their Dad's penis to make them masculine or did you just make that up?

I've seen documentaries (which are no longer allowed to be shown in the U.S.) where certain tribes "right-to-passage" ceremony where young boys drink the semen of the elders of the tribe out of a Sacred Cup and than go off naked into the wilderness to survive for a certain length of time before returning to the tribe as a man.

I'm not making it up. The Etoro is only a small tribe of about 400 people, so it's not all people in Papua New Guinea. Type the name into Google and you'll find academic studies of it.

Just to be pedantic, incest was never condoned among the Greeks or Romans. In Ancient Greece pederasty was practiced between non-related men and teenagers, but sexual expression of it was later banned. The Romans never really condoned pederasty, but there was a culture of men who visited young male prostitutes, which was barely tolerated and when Emperors started having teenage male lovers there wasn't a lot they could do!

I don't know of any other culturally accepted incest, cept the southern states of course!

I think you might have jumped the gun with the 'made to suck cock' part. They goal is to imbue the boys with semen, and nothign sexual is part of the relationship, unlike ancient Greco-Roman relationships. Usually, in the semen ritual, semen is placed onto a separate item (cup, bowl, etc.) and the boy must ingest it to become a man. That's definitely drawing a destinction between sexual relationships (in the Azande) and omitting information about the context of the sexual activity in the Etoro. Whereas the Azande are using boys as repalcement wives, the Etoro inseminate boys because they believe it necessary to cause a boy to undergo puberty, not for sexual relationship-based pleasure.

Also, heterosexual activity is restricted to only a few choice occasions. Because the Etoro believe that men only have a limited amount of semen and because they believe that semen is tied to lifeforce, over insemination also means that a man will be brought closer to death. Therefore, heterosexuality for the purpose of mating is reduced to when it is absolutely necessary. Insemenation of young males is also viewed in the same way, with insemenation being a detrimental but necessary process.

There are restrictions on homosexual activity in the context of insemination rituals because a desire for more than what is given or proferred during a ritual marks one as a succubus-like witch.
