The Carpenters + Rap = Dreadful!

Carpenters Lovelines

One of the most under-rated Carpenters albums, remains one of my all-time favorites. The album consists of remixed tracks from the solo Karen Carpenter album as well as deleted album tracks within the last couple recorded albums shortly before Karen's death (Passage, Made In America.)

My favorite tracks are Lovelines, Where do I go from here, You're the one, and Remember when Lovin' took all night.

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

I love the Carpenters. Karen had an awesome voice.
Good thread.

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

I have all their shit on vinyl as well as rare crap. My favorite artist/band of all time :)

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

I grew up listening to the Carpenters. My dad still has them on 8 track tapes.

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

I love the Carpenters as well. I have their box set from 1991 or'92, "From the Top". It's pretty cool. It's funny that you brought up the Carpenters/Karen because there's a book about her called "Little Girl Blue". It came out in May of this year, but I just saw it recently. Might be a cool read.

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

I love the Carpenters. Karen was amazing. my favorite song if I had to pick just one, would have to be Yesterday once More. but when I hear "Sing" it brings me back to kindergarden, then followed by tears. to me, that is such a sad song.

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

Does anybody remember the first LP Ticket To Ride? (Offering)

My fave song from that was Don't Be Afraid.

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

Could listen all day to sounds of Karen and Richard.

Saw them in person years ago at the Missouri State Fair and enjoyed every mintue of there concert.

Re: Carpenters Lovelines

I saw The Carpenters at the London Palladium way back in the 70s.
I have all of their albums
and regularly watch them on you tube.
For me the song goodbye to love is a reflection of my life.

Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

I noticed on the web (and on here) that many fans are gay men -- young and old who absolutley love the music. It's almost considered a gay stereotype (like liking Cher or ABBA), and their fans have been predominantly gay men and straight women.

Is it that straight men who enjoy them are too embarassed to admit to liking soft, "effeminate" sounds about love and gay men don't have that stigma? I think many gay men love Karen and her voice. Many can identify strongly with her tragic personal life (like other gay icons) and tragic death. She was an outsider who led a sad life of pain that she tried to hide. She was almost punished for being herself and didn't feel like she belonged in her family (like gay people might). Her self destructive behavior is one some can check off for themselves. Also, anorexia is second most common in gay men.

But I think gay guys can relate the lyrics and sounds of the saddness and pain in her voice to there own lives and find a sense of comfort and solace in them. She sings out the emotion built up and the music becomes cathartic. Karen's personality and warmth attracts outsiders who can feel better knowing about her. Gay men love women who they can strongly identify with and Karen fits the bill. I also believe that, more than straights, gay's can appreciate beauty and asthetic more than straight men can who dismiss it as shallow love songs.

But, what do you think?

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

Because they sing great catchy songs:

But straight people like catchy tunes too!

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

if idolization of one particular person ( singer or actor ) is common particularly to gay men I would suggest this is just common usual behaviour tempered with the rare certainty that this person is Safe . Cher being a rather emphatic example . Often if media people comment at all it is hostile or negative ( Axl Rose ) , and explicit male positive is very rare . Safeness is rare .

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

dead is about as non-threatening as you can get . Dead famous people . That guy from Queen . Nobody liked him much before . Dying can be a very foresightful career move .

Re: Why Do Gay Men (in particular) Love The Carpenters?

Richard is gay.
